Look, no offence but. I have to put my hand up being in the 'so called welfare industry' and say that we've never played outside of the law to obtain desirable breeds. Nor rehome overnight and claim the dog needed masses of rehab which I believe is being claimed in this case. This story is on the doorstep of those involved, not everyone in rescue. We aren't even on the 'favourites' list of some pounds who prefer rescue over reclaim. Even purebred that come through rescue may need just as much vetwork as everyone else so 'profit' is a myth unless you only deal in 'easy' ones and PTS the expensive ones or just do the desex & vacc only regardless. Not all owners look after their dogs and although PB can rehome with a great deal of interest, the state some of them come in is as appalling as crossbreeds. Over and above desex, vacc, chip. Dental, hernia, bad skin, undescended testes, pyometra, upper respiratory disease etc etc. I am obviously biased because we do usually stand at the end of the line and accept neglected/senior pets but referring to all rescue all in one basket as if we're salivating over pedigree (I am also breed specific rescue) and will do anything to part them from their owners is wrong. I hold no ill will towards owners of anything as long as they take care of their pets. Unfortunately I have to admit in some cases you are correct.

You have to be fast for little breed pups, especially fluffies. Though some are born in rescue or come in as neonates. Many in Sydney are adopted straight from the pound (rescue gets 2nd choice over the public). If you still can't find one maybe the AWL or RSPCA may have had litters or surrenders. Join all the pound & ethical rescue FB pages too as not everyone uses PetRescue. And some interstate rescues will fly their pets to new homes but not all. But in all cases be fast to get your application in. Even with the smooth coated pups we've had received about 20 applications each and many more PetRescue inquiries. Our inbox exploded!

This! Soooo simple but looking at the fb stuff, very hard to grasp for some. They work with rescue, the releasing rescue would have known too but everyone was in a hurry to get a pair of pedigree blues and vanish them over the border.

Mixture here. Dachshunds are making a comeback. Oodles are still regarded by a lot of people here as great family pets, the ones I've seen at the park have been immaculately groomed, completely loopy and very very focussed on their humans. Being rescue and seeing the total rubbishing purebred and non-rescue dogs get, I decided (something unpopular?) it was counter productive to make people feel small because of the kind of dog they chose so if people go get themselves any kind of appropriate breed they will look after and love forever then that's fine. Has anyone noticed how surprised people are when you know their purebred dog's breed?

Diatomaceous (food grade) earth as an insect killer, isn't bad for the yard. Although I found it a pest when it got on feet and tracked into the house. I know some people love coop-ex but have never tried it and can't speak for it's safety.

I use: Monthly heartworm only tablet. An allwormer every six months. And a flea treatment when needed. Bravecto killed my last lot of fleas stone cold. Comfortis was good but I had epileptic dogs so stopped using it. I worry about side effects so am only treating when there's flea season rather than use monthly treatment for things that don't need to be killed. Things like monthly multi-coverage are (in my opinion) overkill. Pound dogs get a Capstar on pickup and an Advocate on arrival. Because they are grotty LOL. Anyway, a Bravecto will do 3 months of just flea & tick. But if you have carpet I'd do a bomb too. The 1st bomb sterilises adult fleas, the 2nd bomb kills the hatched larvae that were embedded in the fibres. My floors are wood and since cat proofing, my yard has had no fleas.

Very poorly! I tend to think that there is more to the news story and that perhaps her claims are truer than it looks because news is normally fact checked before it goes out on tele. His quoted reaction is aggressive .... like you said, is a poor reflection on rescue. The buck needs to stop with the head ranger of the area because if they are too slack to check all registries then there needs to be someone responsible for making it happen. No wonder people don't want lost dogs to get taken to the pound. It was a black hole for those two dogs, how many undesirable (not purebred blues) looking dogs without rescue get put to sleep because of laziness/bad attitude.

I find it a very strange story. They were Qld dogs, meant to be staying on a large property in the NSW Mid Coast area, bolted into the bush just after arrival, picked up by the ranger shortly after, impounded in Gloucester Pound, both chips were not checked properly then off they go to a Vic rescue Who for whatever reason, got private information from the register and called the owner whose details must have still been on the chip. She would never have known what happened to her dogs if they hadn't done that so why they did it (with no intent of reuniting them) is really really weird. Normally we just have to assume the pound has done a decent job re scanning/checking and that's that. How would they know to go digging across state records for the owner and why call her if they believed the dogs should not go back to her anyway.

I've PTS 4 retirees this year under circumstances which other rescuers may have chosen to make the dog fight to live. This thread hurts like shit. BTW in our case, certain donations are specifically designated by donors to go to the dogs in Forever Care (the retirees).

Protexin? Awesome probiotic but you've tried that kind of thing. I forgot to add raw green tripe, haven't tried it but apparently it helps breath a lot. If the probiotics didn't work I'd definitely give it a go despite the gross factor. Abscess comes from the carnassial tooth because of it's structure so if it's been compromised, cracked or has a food trap it could be a source of pain and smell without it breaking up and pushing it's way through the face yet (up under the eye). The infection burrows itself up quite a distance in the form of a fistula. If he's been on antibiotics after the dental it can put a temporary hold on the infection but not get rid of it if there's a permanent problem needing help.

Scottsmum I think it is an offence to remove anything from a National Park. I'm torn on the topic. There is no way I'd do it and it creeps me out but on the other hand we intentionally kill animals for all sorts of things like food and clothing, and I like the idea that every single part of that animal is used (out of respect?). That nothing is wasted.

Isn't there a certain amount of time before you can rehome a nuisance order dog? I swear I had to wait 6 months to rehome a silky with an order on him. (He would escape his home when his two very large mates would push the palings out so all three were declared nuisance)

I liked a metacam & gabapentin combo (works really well together, same as previcox would) at night time after a supper, it seemed to improve movement in the morning. I don't think the stiffer dogs get to shift around at night like they would have so my logic was that it was a better night's sleep.

that's interesting...the Illawarra is also infested with foxes (more dead foxes on the princess highway than any other wild animal), and considering that the virus is spread by faeces and urine and can survive for months I wonder why there are no cases of infected dogs recorded for the last 10 years. There are quite some farms with working dogs around where the working dogs never see a booster shot... ...would it make sense to collect the fox carcasses and test them for the virus to get a better picture about how the disease is spread over the area / NSW? I don't know about the Illawarra but farmers can and do dispatch dogs themselves peacefully and at home rather than take a lengthy drive to the vet for the same outcome which is something to keep in mind. NSW had a distemper outbreak a couple of years ago. I can't remember where. It's a horrible disease, probably 20+ yrs ago I lost a litter, I jumped up and down and told the vet they had it (maybe he hadn't seen it before?) but he sent me home with them anyway and they died in my arms one after the other. That wouldn't have been left to suffer if that was parvo. Thank god, touch wood, I've not seen hepatitis yet. C3 is the core vaccine and it's upsetting that we're still losing dogs to preventable diseases because they didn't even get their puppy series.

Norty henry Chooks are irresistible to some! edit; I forgot to mention his ears. Have them flushed while desexing but also get a deep pathology swab of each ear first. Sometimes they can have more than one bacterial or fungal growing in there that are resistant to regular ear treatments. I had a guy with 3 different types, he went on specific drops which were full-on and not cheap but worked, one bottle for each ear so you don't accidentally spread it. Short answer is no, sounds like what he was given is inadequate for what he has living in there.

Yep. I've seen a lot of boys taper off their interest to 'mark' everything. Combine it with appropriate re-training like a pup and they catch on, easier than with marking girls who will pee over the top of each other's pee!!

That boy is amazing. Just leaping into saving his sister and taking the attack himself. Incredible. And does anyone else get the feeling there might be something wrong with the owner? I mean .... taking off leash dogs, known biters, telling the kids to stand up then to stop screaming, not raising a hand to help, then pissing off into hiding while the kids are crying and bleeding. That goes waaaaaaay beyond 'irresponsible owner' and all the way into Crazy Town.
