  1. I get it from ebay! Straight to my po box. For me, powder on the food has been fine. It's pretty inert but if you have a favourite treat like cottage cheese or youghurt, sardines etc then you know it will get eaten. I know people have found soluble pretty good but mine won't touch tampered water. Even a tiny bit of apple cider vinegar or liquid aloe gets rejected.
  2. Ditto to that. So much more effective. Probiotics; Protexin from IAHP It's great stuff.
  3. Yep I find heartgard a bit of a waste. It doesn't do all the worms and they don't need worming every month anyway. Some allwormers do flea tapeworm, some do hydatid as well. Anyway, it's just a risk vs benefit balance that can be area specific. It's good to hear heartworm prevalence is lower in SA! Sometimes sydney vets will have a little map with red stickers for all the HW positive dogs that show up. Usually yes flea season is the warmer months. IMHO if you've got roaming cats around the neighbourhood it is exacerbated, you'll notice in your area if you hear a lot of cat fights as they get stuck into breeding season. Anyway, you'll see the fleas while you check for ticks. Get rid of them asap before they move into your carpet and yard. A capstar would do. I don't give very senior retired dogs anything except allwormer here and there. If I control the fleas on the others and the environment, the oldies don't get them. They do get a heartworm test, intranasal kennel cough (lots are getting C3 at the pounds now regardless), a wormer, a wash and a capstar. I consider that a fresh start and am pretty happy that they are comfy and covered. Thistle, cat poo kisses groooosss. Gruf, I think that thread is gone. It's scary what you hear about vets sometimes. Some really good advice is gone now.
  4. Heartworm specific tablets for once a month. (Valueheart) And then given that intestinal worming only needs to be done every 3 months once your puppy is 16 weeks or so. Drontal. In flea season I give flea specific Advantage. But only use it when necessary. I've tried Bravecto for a full on kill of fleas and it works beautifully. Occasionally you'll notice that fleas develop an immunity to a drug used repeatedly so a good kill-off works well and them you get back to normal. Anway, it takes a bit extra marking on the calendar but I'm very very suspicious about the benefit vs negatives of 'all in one' used every month for their whole lives when it's completely unnecessary. And can happily manage doing it for multiple dogs to cut down on chemicals. Not sure if that actually answers your questions but that's what I do.
  5. I usually encourage people to cut & paste this. Edit as you wish, it needs updating. :) Juice is spot on. Staffy types are everywhere (getting a rescue to prioritise a surrender over a pound dog is rare) so these two will really really really need to stand out and the owner needs to do absolutely everything they can. http://www.seniorsandsilkies.org.au/rehoming-your-pet.html
  6. And this one. I just had to clone out the bird poo on the concrete. I know they aren't perfect but it was such a beautiful day in Terrigal and little Dulcie was sniffing the air and watching the birds.
  7. I got some like this! No editing except a crop. :)
  8. You mean misusing it. Someone has been carefully studying corporate motivational gobbledegook. I have mixed feelings about what is happening at Petrescue. They certainly do provide a service, a good one. And they provide it to both rescuers and adopters free of charge. I have absolutely zero qualms about them raising funds to continue to do that, or to extend or improve those services. But I admit to being somewhat afraid that they will abuse their own hard earned reputation by becoming one of the big money hungry charities that become so top heavy that they lose sight of their original goal. Donation gathering ability is highly prized in the charity executive employee resume as is the establishment of expensive projects. Not saying that that is the case here, but there have been so many changes lately, and it is not always clear to me how those changes are going to improve things for pets or adopters or rescuers. Spot on, the new guy is all that and more.
  9. Me too! It's totally meme worthy. LOL
  10. I love Joint Performance. And a course of Cartrophen.
  11. I'm not sure what you mean but I'm staying well away from participating in the pound program discussion because I think my feelings on the matter of home visits, assessment and quarantine as well as lifetime support and a return policy are viewed as fairly militant. But also because I get sick of having the Winograd way preached at me like I'm some kind of fossil who wants dogs to die. Somewhere I did hint that the listing of photos and taking donations for dogs you don't actually touch was familiar, but it wasn't taken up by anyone.
  12. It was coming from a long way off and I don't understand why so many people didn't want to see it. PR are in it for themselves, not us. Not anymore. We work for them. And when this system goes through we may as well be out in the street shaking a donation tin for them. Get ready people. eta related threads http://www.dolforums...social-profile/ http://www.dolforums...s-on-petrescue/ http://www.dolforums...d-dog-campaign/ http://www.dolforums...g-at-petrescue/ http://www.dolforums...l-to-petrescue/
  13. I doubt it. Only about 50% of dogs in this country are registered, vaccinated or microchipped. What on earth makes people think that a law (which won't be resourced for enforcement) will make an ounce of difference to people who don't obey the laws now. It will penalise responsible people and their dogs and do SFA to stem the flow into pounds I'd say. Time will tell. I hope people don't get stuck on sentence 1 If it only dents number slightly at first then that still counts. Just 5% would be huge!
  14. It will cut down on the amount of unwanted pups. Rural pounds in particular, dependant on area - certain breeds are over represented in impound and euthanasia rates. All have med-large litters and are so easy to come by that when you don't want one anymore you just get rid of it and get another later. Or get rid of the whole lot incl mum, and keep one pup. I'm referring to bull arab and pigging types, stag types, camp dogs, working breed crosses, staffy crosses. No idea how they are going to police it though. If it's anything like microchipping then the same dogs I refer to aren't chipped either. I forgot to add that the populations of these dogs are a harbour for parvo and heartworm. Parvo regularly sweeping through towns and pounds with litters as they are sold through the community or end up left at the pound gate. Sorry but as usual govt steps with harsh reform because they don't enforce existing legislation and people won't take up the opportunity for low cost desexing.
  15. Interesting. Strong possibility due to the location of the pond. Another pooch is under the weather today too so we'll be looking at removing the pond and putting the fish in a tank. Its a free standing pond and a pain to clean easily anyway. Yes it's a funny, hidden kind of thing. Not something that leaps to mind but I do a cleanout before the cold sets in. The tadpoles and pond plants keep growth under control during warm months. There was a massive die-off of blue green algae in the park wetland a few years ago and it was bad enough to hospitalise dogs!
  16. Oh that's about the only time I get to see pedigree dogs up close! ...... Except the easter show but it's rude to harass the poor tired looking people who have been there all day so I stay at a distance.
  17. I have two dogs in a new home that travel between NSW and Qld. What's the most reliable (national?) database for this pair? 99% of our dogs are NSW/ACT, maybe I should put everyone on a national database as well?
  18. I get yearly intranasal. The seniors and immune compromised are too vulnerable. Purdie, I'm so sorry about your little dog
  19. An FYI. An algae die-off like you can get in winter when the sun isn't enough to keep it growing can cause a bad tummy if they drink it. Not just ponds but funny little places like the dishes under pot plants. Boggy spots, that kind of thing. Usually a bit of algae in water dishes isn't there long enough to die off. I forgot to add. Farex is good if they won't eat regular rice.
  20. Just a suggestion, they could stop selling their rejects to backyard breeders and puppy farmers. I speak to a lot of people who believe that pedigree dogs are inherently sick so they fall for the people who don't breed as pedigree (papered ANKC). One 'rescuer' currently breeds a small fortune worth of brachy she got as registered breeder rejects and people line up to get a popular breed they believe are healthier because they aren't 'show dogs'. It disturbs me to think that people believe handing pet ownership over to rescue and welfare is the solution. We squawk about regulations but can't even regulate ourselves. Off topic slightly. Sorry. But some registered breeders are busily undoing generations of work, same as some within the greyhound industry brought about it's end in NSW.
