  1. I liked a metacam & gabapentin combo (works really well together, same as previcox would) at night time after a supper, it seemed to improve movement in the morning. I don't think the stiffer dogs get to shift around at night like they would have so my logic was that it was a better night's sleep.
  2. that's interesting...the Illawarra is also infested with foxes (more dead foxes on the princess highway than any other wild animal), and considering that the virus is spread by faeces and urine and can survive for months I wonder why there are no cases of infected dogs recorded for the last 10 years. There are quite some farms with working dogs around where the working dogs never see a booster shot... ...would it make sense to collect the fox carcasses and test them for the virus to get a better picture about how the disease is spread over the area / NSW? I don't know about the Illawarra but farmers can and do dispatch dogs themselves peacefully and at home rather than take a lengthy drive to the vet for the same outcome which is something to keep in mind. NSW had a distemper outbreak a couple of years ago. I can't remember where. It's a horrible disease, probably 20+ yrs ago I lost a litter, I jumped up and down and told the vet they had it (maybe he hadn't seen it before?) but he sent me home with them anyway and they died in my arms one after the other. That wouldn't have been left to suffer if that was parvo. Thank god, touch wood, I've not seen hepatitis yet. C3 is the core vaccine and it's upsetting that we're still losing dogs to preventable diseases because they didn't even get their puppy series.
  3. Norty henry Chooks are irresistible to some! edit; I forgot to mention his ears. Have them flushed while desexing but also get a deep pathology swab of each ear first. Sometimes they can have more than one bacterial or fungal growing in there that are resistant to regular ear treatments. I had a guy with 3 different types, he went on specific drops which were full-on and not cheap but worked, one bottle for each ear so you don't accidentally spread it. Short answer is no, sounds like what he was given is inadequate for what he has living in there.
  4. Yep. I've seen a lot of boys taper off their interest to 'mark' everything. Combine it with appropriate re-training like a pup and they catch on, easier than with marking girls who will pee over the top of each other's pee!!
  5. PM Steve as well. She might be able to help with the alternatives. She knows a LOT about all that stuff.
  6. That lawyer!!! They make quite a team.
  7. I would get a second opinion if you're looking at something like lifetime steroids. That head shaking needs to stop.
  8. That boy is amazing. Just leaping into saving his sister and taking the attack himself. Incredible. And does anyone else get the feeling there might be something wrong with the owner? I mean .... taking off leash dogs, known biters, telling the kids to stand up then to stop screaming, not raising a hand to help, then pissing off into hiding while the kids are crying and bleeding. That goes waaaaaaay beyond 'irresponsible owner' and all the way into Crazy Town.
  9. I'm so sorry it's so hard. Kidney and liver failure can also change things drastically. Personality changes, mainly kind of dull and ga-ga. Slow. Sleepy. Some will seek a corner and just stand there for hours or get wedged in places. Thirst means more need to pee and they can't keep up with it. Sometimes it's very diluted For CCD, vivitonin or the beta blocker propranolol work well if CCD is the problem. Let me know if you need a chat or anything. xxx Anna
  10. Same. I'm not sure how you assess separation anxiety in a kennels but it seems to be common reason for PTS. As does "behavioural" with no explanation.
  11. Localised to the ears and mouth, in my experience, is food allergy related. Seems to be aggravated by poultry products, turkey being the worst. I can't explain why it works or give you any data that you can't find on google, but cutting out fowl completely (incl checking every ingredient on dry food because chicken is usually in there) has had a few wins here. My most chronic rescue with scabbed mouth and pus filled ears took about 6 months to turn around and he'll always be slightly deaf. Cannot even have a teaspoon of fowl without a flare-up.
  12. Dosages for antihistamines; http://communityvet.net/2009/07/diy-antihistamines/ They are all very different, plus you have first generation eg phenergan and second generation like claratyne. Lots of trial and error. Some more drowsy/sedating than others. Apoquel is probably the $4 tablet you mean and you can't use it on such a young dog so getting started with other alternatives and working your way through them can start now, you may never need to use it. p.s. Always have some phenergan in the cupboard if you have a bee chaser. Works brilliantly!
  13. I read through the breeder profiles and one had all the health things they check for Didn't realise there are so many things so now I know. Thank you griffon peoples! They look absolutely adorable and with so many apartments now it's really good hear about how they go. While it's nice for old dogs to get a home, I've had many who will, yes sleep all day but are not happy enough to amuse themselves, chew chewies, potter in and out or find the best sunny spots. Some need so much more than waiting all day and I don't like seeing them curl up in a ball and not move for hours. (benefits of a spy camera LOL)
  14. Have you ever been asked to present a vaccination cert? I haven't.
  15. This works on rescuers too (not meaning you should give treats to make us sit LOL) I'm not a big dog rescuer ... mostly. But walking past the big dog cages, Toby was sitting up the front and he was sitting as hard as he could. Just being a beautiful boy Ignoring his fence fighter neighbour. He is one of the most special dogs and was an incredible foster. And it was because he spoke to me. I didn't have a treat with me but the pound (Renbury) did hang up treats a couple of years later and the dogs loved it.
  16. It's very cool of Jetpets & Virgin. The program with Jetpets has been there for years (2007 apparently), but with a different carrier so it's really really nice to give public credit again. I think it was only available to rehome pets before but apparently it can be used to rescue them as well now? From pound to rescue etc. As usual though Pet Rescue have been flexible with announcing numbers. ;) It's actually 995 member groups and 3 flights a month available to go around. quote article Director Vicky Davy
  17. Oooh, so you didn't register? I'm so sorry, I put the link somewhere in one of my posts but didn't realise it's not in this thread. http://rescuedpets.com.au/ Nope, had never heard of the site. I had a look at the group I assume is behind it (what's doing with the soviet/communist theme anyway, it's.. not cute) and actual information seems pretty scant. Yeh I did a lot of stickybeaking too. Looks like a rescue (Derek at MKC used to be 'Cat Rescue' years ago so he isn't a newbie) and a company who I assume is able to build the site or fund it or something. :) I'm just going to see how it goes. Quite a few have tried to set up an alternative/extra option to PR but have faded away. So if this works and isn't weird I'll give it a go.
  18. Hell no! I know we've had run-ins but seriously, your input and experience is valuable especially these days and I always read it. Don't be another one who takes their knowledge away. Kirty, there's not enough rescuers on here as it is. A wonky thread is upsetting, I totally understand but the same goes. Keep it up.
