I Fleming Some good points here. I'll only add that when you see them wake up, before they do the awake-shake and start toddling around take them straight outside. Seniors can sleep long and soundly, I think their bladder fills up and once they get moving they realise a pee is on it's way! edit; except now I see you're doing that already Doh

Where Do You Advertise Your Fosters?
_PL_ replied to Simply Grand's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Black! The hardest ones to get photos of We have our website, & PetRescue which refers to the site for the proper profiles. Reluctantly we have FB but a volunteer does that. Get her her own album to keep updating. I'm loving doing instagram. You could even start her own account to catch candid moments and funny things. We'll also use the new rescuedpets.org.au when it eventually starts. Info you didn't ask for and may be a complete nonsense LOL.... You need really good photos, right into the dog's eyes. Put your rescue's name on each as a bit of branding. Pics are the very first thing that catches interest especially if you're working with a common 'unremarkable' dog (sorry, I'm not meaning she isn't an un-special unique soul. I'm just assuming by your description that she's a big crossbreed & you really need to make her stand out above all the other big crossbreeds). A good name, something light and breezy, quirky. And a good writeup that is enthusiastic as well as honest. Not toooo long all at once or people skip to the next dog which is why spreading the info over a few places seems to work well. Catch attention in little chunks and an interested person will look for more. -
Yep! We get complaints to PR that we said no to an applicant. Or that we haven't replied, which is always done and I can prove it with emails. They're probably enforcing the new membership conditions rule that we agreed to just by being members. "Respond to enquiries generated from the PetRescue website within 72 hours." Thinking along the path I've been predicting & following throughout these changes; Although we've always gotten emails from PR anyway but now it's possible your membership can be used as leverage if they choose. You will just slowly begin to miss out on their things like paid advertising on FB or featured dogs in favour of groups with in-house responses and high turnover or simply just by being large - AKA a regular stream of listings for new intakes generating in more inquiries, building PR a larger income stream. With the new comms system you will need to stick to your membership agreement and reply in 72hrs because their boosting income plans depends on it. Quote Shel- "This new 'Matchmaker' system will keep a history of successful enquiries on the PetRescue site and fully traceable for solicitation purposes. "

Oooh, so you didn't register? I'm so sorry, I put the link somewhere in one of my posts but didn't realise it's not in this thread. http://rescuedpets.com.au/

1st is I have no Iggy experience, just others incl geriatrics. Thing that sprang to mind is it's all very exciting and the ones who are less able or less inclined to tell other dogs to get lost are eyed off by humpy dogs like a teddy or a lounge cushion would be. I think your swift constant correction = no fun, and will end it. She'll soon be crated for a long time, so if it really came down to it I'd use baby gates to separate pest from delicate. I'm interested to hear about the surgery! Is there a thread?

Sorry Maddy I wish I could remember where I put the emails! It was something along the lines of selecting a number of groups to be launched in Beta (as a test run?) but I didn't actually realise we might be one if we got the registration thingos. Just assumed that everyone got one and they'd go from there. Maybe it's not that way after all

Witness Sought - Sydney, Darling Island, Pirrama Park
_PL_ replied to Aleksey's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'm not sure exactly what this thread is about but it's scary enough to read how little you can say. You don't have much time unfortunately otherwise I'd suggest to join or start a little social dog walkers group? Safety in numbers and local info. ;) Oops, just realised I know the park areas you're talking about. It would help if you changed the title to 'Witness sought- Darling Island Sydney Pirrama Park' . Unfortunately their yearly markets have been and gone. I can't find any more planned events you could mingle in. -
There's been a few emails so you can establish an account/membership but I'm not sure when the Beta version is launching.

Washing A Really (Really) Dirty Dog
_PL_ replied to dilemmax's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I've never tried it for this reason - but I have have used it to get paspalum off Scottie before. The bonus was he stayed still while I massaged it in - because he was busy licking / eating the bits he could reach  I will add - they do feel a bit lank after using it but its probably no worse than how he already feels. It's also possible the stronger shampoo will strip that oil back out. I'll remember that little tip! Forgot to add that QV Gentle Wash (I use it when my hands get cracked - from always being washed & dried) is a good standby if the skin is thin or cracked but still needs a wash. Then a coat of coconut oil left on. That worked well for Bertie especially on his bottom and was safe for him to lick. But he wasn't a grime dog. -
Washing A Really (Really) Dirty Dog
_PL_ replied to dilemmax's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I'm not sure how much grot and old skin the dog has we've had some really bad ones. So for the stubborn stuff, before a bath (selsun) I sit down, rub them in coconut oil, wait for it to soak a while then use a flea comb to comb through the grime and it lifts off nicely into the comb. Washing only does so much when the skin has been bad for so long. Anyway if you get nothing lifting off into the comb then forget I suggested it. Best feed a nutritious home made diet. You've got to work from the inside out as well. -
Do you have anyone around who can show you how to do subcutaneous fluids? It's like getting IV fluids into them except under the skin and they absorb it as needed. Might be time to get a new vet get her results transferred and maybe someone here can recommend a more hands-on vet.

God I love that. I love seeing them all sleeping together like a furry bundle. The silkies are mostly the same colour and blend in with each other. Who is the snuggler acting as cushion for the grey's head?

I get it from ebay! Straight to my po box. For me, powder on the food has been fine. It's pretty inert but if you have a favourite treat like cottage cheese or youghurt, sardines etc then you know it will get eaten. I know people have found soluble pretty good but mine won't touch tampered water. Even a tiny bit of apple cider vinegar or liquid aloe gets rejected.

Ditto to that. So much more effective. Probiotics; Protexin from IAHP It's great stuff.

Heartworm, Intestinal Worms And Flea Treatments
_PL_ replied to Kjn's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yep I find heartgard a bit of a waste. It doesn't do all the worms and they don't need worming every month anyway. Some allwormers do flea tapeworm, some do hydatid as well. Anyway, it's just a risk vs benefit balance that can be area specific. It's good to hear heartworm prevalence is lower in SA! Sometimes sydney vets will have a little map with red stickers for all the HW positive dogs that show up. Usually yes flea season is the warmer months. IMHO if you've got roaming cats around the neighbourhood it is exacerbated, you'll notice in your area if you hear a lot of cat fights as they get stuck into breeding season. Anyway, you'll see the fleas while you check for ticks. Get rid of them asap before they move into your carpet and yard. A capstar would do. I don't give very senior retired dogs anything except allwormer here and there. If I control the fleas on the others and the environment, the oldies don't get them. They do get a heartworm test, intranasal kennel cough (lots are getting C3 at the pounds now regardless), a wormer, a wash and a capstar. I consider that a fresh start and am pretty happy that they are comfy and covered. Thistle, cat poo kisses groooosss. Gruf, I think that thread is gone. It's scary what you hear about vets sometimes. Some really good advice is gone now. -
Heartworm, Intestinal Worms And Flea Treatments
_PL_ replied to Kjn's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Heartworm specific tablets for once a month. (Valueheart) And then given that intestinal worming only needs to be done every 3 months once your puppy is 16 weeks or so. Drontal. In flea season I give flea specific Advantage. But only use it when necessary. I've tried Bravecto for a full on kill of fleas and it works beautifully. Occasionally you'll notice that fleas develop an immunity to a drug used repeatedly so a good kill-off works well and them you get back to normal. Anway, it takes a bit extra marking on the calendar but I'm very very suspicious about the benefit vs negatives of 'all in one' used every month for their whole lives when it's completely unnecessary. And can happily manage doing it for multiple dogs to cut down on chemicals. Not sure if that actually answers your questions but that's what I do. -
I usually encourage people to cut & paste this. Edit as you wish, it needs updating. :) Juice is spot on. Staffy types are everywhere (getting a rescue to prioritise a surrender over a pound dog is rare) so these two will really really really need to stand out and the owner needs to do absolutely everything they can. http://www.seniorsandsilkies.org.au/rehoming-your-pet.html

And this one. I just had to clone out the bird poo on the concrete. I know they aren't perfect but it was such a beautiful day in Terrigal and little Dulcie was sniffing the air and watching the birds.
