  1. No it is not normal for a pup to have blood in their stools after worming. Is it a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or a Cocker Spaniel you have? she is a cocker spaniel Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Cocker Spaniels are two totally different breeds - is she a cross between the two breeds? I'd be taking her off to the vet for a check up. She is a cavalier king charles spaniel, not a cross however the breeders we bought our dogs off referred to them as cavalier king charles cocker spaniels, so i assumed that was the correct name. They are not cross breed dogs, and thanxs for pointing out the correct name for them. Can you please post a picture of your dog/s? What breed do you have??????
  2. I'm sorry to hear about your family's loss Moops He lived out a long wonderful life with your family He was a very lucky boy! RIP Scamp
  3. 1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) first time pet owner. Oi is a blue roan and has been part of our family for 3.5 years now (coming from a breeder). I also have Orson (a gold) but he is not a pedigree. 5. What is the general temperament/personality? Very merry, affectionate and loyal. Though I'm sure a few owners will agree that they can betray you if there's food involved! 6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? Oi is very happy to lounge all day on her pillow/lounge but just as happy to go for walks with her nose on the ground. Obviously it depends on the individual Cocker....some will need more exercise, some don't need a lot. I think the dynamics of the household factors a little bit on the circumstances. 7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? Yes, as long as you're prepared to do the training and not give into their gorgeous eyes. Just be prepared by researching a little and ensuring that Cockers is the breed for you. 8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? Yes they can. Please be aware though that Cocker Spaniels are not outdoors only dogs. Cockers are very affectionate and loves to be around you. 9. How much grooming is required? Different Cockers have different coats and some requires more/less but I believe 5-10 minutes daily would be a good routine to get into They can be easily trained to let you brush them while you're watching TV etc so it doesn't have to be a chore. 10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? Nope. I used to work at an After School Care centre and I used to take Oi and Orson (Orson is not a pedigree) to my work on my days off. There were no problems at all and the kids loved them. I let the kids take the leads but was always close by. 11. Are there any common hereditary problems a puppy buyer should be aware of? PRA 12. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be) Testing for PRA and Hip Displasia (HD) For people who are looking to getting a Cocker Spaniel to join their family, my advice is do your research thoroughly - go to a couple of dog shows and talk to different breeders, seek out references about the breeders you are planning to approach (that may be from people who have gotten dogs from these breeders etc). Take the time as it is an important decision for you and your family.
  4. Maybe I should send Oi over for a few days. As you know, Orson and Oi sleep in the bedroom with us. The bedroom door is closed so no chance of them causing mischief when we're asleep. Oi is generally good because we let her out before we go to bed. But there's been times when she's woken up and pawed us until we woke up and let her out! Don't get me wrong! It's great that she does it but being woken up at 3am to be dragged out of my warm bed isn't exactly pleasant no matter how much I love her!
  5. kendall, you end up getting one? I thought about it but then decided that I would hate to give Orson unlimited access!!!! I may change my mind but at the moment it's easier for me to just open the sliding door when they want to go out.
  6. I've got 2 Cockers and they food!!!!! There's no such thing called a 'slow eat' bowl in their eyes! You can get 'Cocker Spaniel' bowls that's designed to help keep their ears out of the bowl....... Stainless Steel Spaniel Bowl .90 Lt from Pets on the Park (http://www.petsonthepark.com.au/category76_1.htm) Embossed Stainless Steel Cocker Bowl from OzPetShop (http://www.ozpetshop.com.au/product_info.p...products_id/779) I have the bowls from Pets on the Park. While it doesn't look like it does the job, it seems to be doing ok for my 2 (they're 4 years old). Another option instead of buying special eating bowls is to buy them snoods.........

  16. everyone. It sounds like I will buy a dremel to use instead of doing the painful process of nail clipping. I am always sooooo scared of doing Oi's nails cos they're black. I took her to a dog grooming place to get them done and it was more painful watching them do it cos Oi obviously didn't want to be there and there was also a little of bleeding too (felt so horrible). As for Orson, he's got a funny nail (his 'pinky' on his front right paw doesn't touch the ground so it requires frequent monitoring).
  17. Hi All, After another excruciating episode of wrestling 2 Cockers to trim nails, I did a search and found that a lot of people either use filers or rotary tools to trim dog nails. I've found some good links from my searching through past DOL threads about how to trim the nails etc. I noticed there's some people who have a hobby kit? (i'm assuming it's smaller than a normal dremel?) Questions are: What brand? Which sort is it (small/cordless)? How much was it? What speed do you use it on? Which bit do you use? (from what I've read, the sandpaper bit) What dogs do you have? in advance. This is all very new to me as I don't know my power tools
  18. to you and Ollie. I will be thinking about him!
  19. Can't believe it's been a year already!!!!!!! to you and your family during this time. It's definitely hard  My mum lost Rex just after Christmas and she still thinks of him everyday.

  22. We tried the paw paw ointment on Sunday and noticed it went down. Mum called her regular vet on Monday morning and explained the situation (bath, paw paw ointment etc) and emailed the pics (before and after) to the vet. He had a look at them and said he was very pleased to see that it had gone down considerably but he suggested a check-up just to be sure. They went yesterday afternoon and the vet gave the ok. The vet ruled out allergies. He reckons she must have just had a really itchy bum and used whatever means she could to relieve the itch.
  23. We didn't end up going to the vet's. Mum just gave her a bath and put some paw paw ointment. She's still very happy. She follows my mum everywhere and loves looking at the bunnies.........
