  1. Good luck Melzawelza with your venture.........a doco on WHERE pet shop puppies come from would be an eye opener for the "average" joe bloggs I'm sure the average puppy buyer from a petshop thinks puppy farm as a "warm cuddly" place where puppies frolic in green grass. As before mentioned pictures speak louder than words, however audio of the pups would be just as devestating & effective on the senses.
  2. Just reading pervious thread on teaching older dogs to go up car ramps had me remembering when I use to teach puppy classes back in Adelaide. To teach confidence.....in themselves & their handlers, I would introduce puppy dog walks,(this was years ago before the introduction of puppy agility classes) One little rotty pup really took to it His owners told me that during the week, human "Dad" was using his ute to do some garden work & to get the wheelbarrow up & down the back of the ute, he used a ramp. The little rotty thought it looked to much fun & walked himself up & down the ramp..........much to the amusement of his owners What have you Dolers taught your classes with similar outcomes???
  3. Had a phone call from one of my puppy buyers in SA tonight with one of the most unusual brags to date! Not an obedience brag, not a show ring brag, though I suppose it was a performance brag!! My friends have a house that they are restoring in the Mid North of SA & they have a bunny population problem Robin (the human) bagged four bunnies, however their Gsd, Tao bagged SIX bunnies himself!!!!! How any of you had an unusal brag with any of your dogs???????
  4. Whoop whoop well done Kira & Barb!!!!!!!
  5. Absolutely! I choke up every time there is a parade of veterans at our specialty. I have seen dogs paraded who I have never 'liked' before, but still clap and cheer for them as just seeing how chuffed they are doing a lap of the ring to great applause is wonderful. They really do feel extra special to not only have been brought to a show (most oldies are left behind where it's warm) but to be groomed and sprayed and have a show lead around their necks...... just like the good old days when they were the 'rising stars' of their kennel. I used to enter my old sheppie girl in the neuter classes down here and SHE LOVED IT!!! Tia was an aust champ & multi titled in obedience & agility & could never figure why she got "left" behind So when the local shows started offering neuter classes, I entered her for a run. At twelve, she would stand next to me trembling with excitment before going in the ring & off we would go....... abit slower than in her glory days However she still had the head up & her great waggy tail & thought the whole ringside should stop for her!! :D It was lovely to have people come up & comment on how it was great to see on "oldie" still loving the ring. One of my most memorable moments ( & I"m in tears thinking about it) was her very last show, where some of the people who have became close friends were there to cheer her around the "in show" ring that day. Sadly she had a stroke six months later, but that memory of that day is why we love & cherish our dogs

  13. I would keep an eye out also for mites.......I know you cant see them with the naked eye........Our guys caught & killed & ate a possum awhile ago now & a couple of weeks later started scratching quite abit. Noticed a bald red spot on one the sheppies back & while at the vet of one thing, got the vet to have a look at the bald spot. Turned out to be a mite, cant remember the name, gave all four dogs a hydrobath in malawash, solved the mite problem!
  14. A friend of mine was over in Adelaide for the Wei national & laughed at how walking on a loose leash sorted out the "men from the boys".....so to speak. Personally I always/will show my sheppies on loose leashes too, I always smile to myself when I hear the group 5 judge clearly say "loose leashes" for the sheppies. Hmm just out of curiosity, how would walking on a loose leash sort the "men from the boys"? do you mean it didn't allow anyone to disguise movement or do you mean something else? I personally wasn't bothered by it... but i am aware of the many that were. I am regularly asked to walk on a loose lead with the other breed I show... but there is a reason for that. Sorry.. bad choice of words ;) It most certainly meant to mean, not allowing anyone to disguise their dogs movement. My girlfriend who was there competing with her dogs commented on how some of the dogs really showed their "true" movement on loose leashes and how it was nice to see natural movement. I certainly didn't mean for it to come across as anything else
  15. to the gorgeous Barb, Kirra & young Rory :D :D

  20. Yes, me too...and my thought says "let the fun/circus, begin!" I've seen your girls showing on a loose lead and it's nice to see a dog both under control and correctly gaiting as well. Why "thank you" Angelsun, personally I always have prefered to see sheppies striding it out on a loose lead regardless of allbreeds or specialist
