  1. My cats I prefer to leave at home in their own familar environment Where I live now I can leave my dogs as my housemate looks after them. Before I used boarding kennels - It's a bit embarrassing when your dog pulls so hard that you have to let go of the lead - she couldn't get into them fast enough and went straight out the back, put herself in one of the grassed runs and sat there waiting for the gate to be locked  That to me means a good kennel, dogs are happy and well looked after and I know they are safe and not disturbing the neighbours barking
  2. Happy fourth birthday Stan! Hope you have a wonderful day and that it's a fancy meat pie, not just any kind  My Flashy, also an ex Hawkesbury Poundie, says "Hope you have a fantastic day and so glad that you have such a wonderful home like I do"
  3. on my first transport mission I travelled with four coolies in a medium crate in the back of my Corolla from Sydney to WillowTree. I said to the person who brought them to me that they wouldn't fit in the crate but they did. Squashed but they did. And the person replied "it's far better that they be squished for a few hours than being left in a pound to die" and apart from the dreadful car sickness they experienced they were fine at the other end. so I'm sure that the Great Danes can be squished down to fit. Just keep reminding them of the alternatives as you drive along. Good luck with it all
  4. my cat is Hyacinth, she got out one night, I was trawling the streets calling "Hyacinth, Hyacinth" feeling like a real dill brain and kicking myself for calling her that  She now comes to Heidi
  5. When I lived in Canada, a friend of a friend had a ginger cat named Pekoe, after the popular tea blend there Orange Pekoe. I've always thought it was a cute name. You could add that to your list :) love it - thank you!
  6. a good friend of mine will take them, the dogs absolutely adore her and will be happy. I thought about my griffon going back to the breeder but she wouldn't let that - adores the little fellow too much.
  7. My Onslow was named after the character Onslow on Keeping Up Appearances. Both big and lazy - my Ons likes nothing better than slying on a couch  Although a few years ago we were on holidays at the beach and this lady commented on Onslow's name and said how patriotic I was - she thought he was named after Onslow MacArthur  I'm dying to name a dog Bucket pronounced Bouquet  Latte was named Latte because she is white chocolate, milk chocolate and dark chocolate colouring. Mocha was named to keep up with the coffee theme and the new pup *cross fingers* will be Chino. when Latte has her pups I have already decided on a "tea" theme for them - Dilmah, Twinings, Earl, Grey, Green, Jasmine, Chai, Tea
  8. Dogmovers also travel in that direction poor little dog
  9. what a wonderful surprise and a beautiful painting no one deserves such a gift as you do Cazstaff, you are an angel to so many dogs
  10. okay now that makes sense! and now my curiousity is no longer thank you all for responding!
  11. Probably would be better in the breeders section but I can't post in that why do breeders ultrasound their pregnant bitches? What is the reason? Is there any advantage? I'm just really curious about it thank you
  12. 1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) first time owner with doing the odd bit of showing 2. Where and why was the breed first developed? in Belgium developed out of several dogs for using as a ratter 3. How common is it in Australia? not very 4. What is the average lifespan? unsure 5. What is the general temperament/personality? my boy is very friendly and sweet natured to people and other dogs. As a pup he was very stubborn but seems to have grown out of that. Absolute clown, he is very funny to watch with his little antics, loves running but also loves to snuggle on laps and have cuddles. 6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? When I lived on a surburban block Mocha was happy with a half hour daily walk and games of fetch which he loves. They are far more active than you think they are being small so do need exercise. Now we live on acres and he runs with coolies (working dogs) for hours he is a very fit fellow and needs lots of exercise. 7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? yes but even though they are small they do need some boundaries and a firm hand to let them know who is boss is my experience with Mocha 8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? I think Mocha would really miss not having playmates, they are such a small dog having two wouldn't be a problem! 9. How much grooming is required? smooth coat like Mocha a quick bath every now and again. Rough coats need to be trimmed or pulled 10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? no not at all. Care would have to be taken with small children, whilst they are sturdy dogs they are still very small 11. Are there any common hereditary problems a puppy buyer should be aware of? a breeder would be a better person to answer this 12. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be)
  13. I told my male coolie off once and he wooed wooed back at me  I told him he was never to answer back to his mum ever! I have lovely conversations with my dogs. If they were ever staying at my friend's they used to send me numerous smss every night to tell me what they had done and ask what was I doing - clever doggies! Now I'm sharing a house we have numerous dogs and we are referred to as "Aunty" It's always "Aunty Jo'e, Bella wants to know if you would..................." or "Aunty Jo'e, Mikey wants a pat" Only the other night I was asking my housemate what she wanted for dinner but I was directing it through Flash my dog "Would you like stroganoff Flashy for your dinner" "Oh you would, would you like it with sour cream" "Yes you would and Rice, potatoe or pasta" "pasta! salad or vegetables" "vegetables, good. But you are going to spit out the mushrooms are you!"   absolutely mad and we should be in a lunatic place but you have to laugh!
  14. Minimax, Kirty is a very knowledgeable and well respected member of this Forum. She did ask a genuine question. Maybe if you could explain why your pup can't go outside whilst you are at work or have a doggy door people would help more. Maybe a secure pen outside might work better for your dog if she only likes to go on grass. I would have thought about 4 hours would be okay for her to hold it in if you can get home at lunchtime. Otherwise it might be a matter of going back to toilet training her to use the pee pads.
  15. my desexed male golden retriever attacks puppies particularly if there are things that he regards highly such as bones, he is a terrible resource guarder. And if there are storms around he is even worse No off leash dog parks where i live but we do live on 35 acres so no need. We also live with many other dogs that belong to my housemate and sometimes there are puppies, I do careful management and if there are pups out when we are outside he is locked away or inside nothing is left around that he can take and guard. He is not a dog that would go up to another dog and start growling and cause a fight, it's only when he has some "treasure" and is guarding that that he barks and chases other dogs away. Thankfully he knows that I am top dog and I take the "treasure" away from him without any problems. Like OP I also thought that older dogs wouldn't attack puppies and I also was led to believe that females and males wouldnt' fight each other - I think that is totally incorrect.

  21. oh what a great shame, i was so looking forward to it and to meeting all of you it can't be helped though Can you hold a show later on in the year?
  22. when will a decision be made? I have to leave home at 5.30 am tomorrow? What a disappointment that the show may be cancelled after all you guys hard work but I hope everybody stays safe and dry, that is the main thing, there will always be a dog show but you only get one life
  23. thanks so much Anne and Sheree! very much appreciated :) My friend was lamenting the loss of the number and thinking that a coolie pup might miss out on a great home - I told her before she completely panicked that I would ask in DOL and they would be able to tell!
