Cost Of Tooth Removal

Recommended Posts

My elderly neighbour has been quoted $600.00 to have her little foxie's double molar removed. Just wondering whether this seems an excessive amount?

She is 9 so they will do the pre op blood test and then said she will need to stay overnight. There is nobody on duty after 10pm, so I can't see the point. She is a very stressy dog and would fret badly. We live very close to SACH so would be able to take her if necessary. She will probably stay with me anyway

They then tried to sell her flea products even though the owner told her she didn't have fleas and the vet couldn't find any dirt when she combed through her fur. Andwanted her to buy really expensive shampoo but she told them that I bathed the dog and I only used the best on my dog(Aloveen).

I just feel she is being ripped off. I don't use these vets for that very reason. I wanted to take the dog to mine but the owner was trying to be independent

My young lab x broke a tooth in a head on collision with our other dog while playing. The total vet bill was $310, which included:

Consultation

Anaesthetic

Surgical removal of tooth

Post op care

Antibiotic injection

Post op consultation one week later

Mind you, she was admitted in the morning and home with us in the evening, not overnight.

To be honest, I was totally shocked at how inexpensive it was. We'd recently moved from the city to the country and were expecting to pay around $1,000 for the procedure based on city prices and our previous vet (who was perhaps ripping us off  ).

Guest Willow

I recently paid $450 for my 6kg little man to have the following done:

Consultation

Pre-anaesthetic blood test

Anaesthetic

Dental scale & polish

Assessment & drainage of tiny cyst on his eyelid that was bothing him

10 days of antibiotics

Having worked in the industry, I don't think it sounds as though they are ripping her off....but they sound like they are on the more expensive end of the scale.

If the dog is 9, she may well need intra operative fluids too, which can be about $50. The tooth you are talking about is large, and difficult to remove, it will need drilling in half to be removed. The procedure itself is hard work, and can take a long time, so the anaesthetic costs will be higher.

Overnight stays also cost.

Does the vet give a seniors discount??? Some vets won't tell you they do unless you actually ask for it

I had a 3.5kg dog that needed a scale and clean with 1 tooth extracted and another one was injected with stuff that was supposed to be instead of removal - total bill was $300 - $400 but was a couple of yrs ago now at a dental specialist. I even stayed in to chat while he was being done.

A 10 mth old Rottie had a tooth capped last yr that was $800 including the follow up 3 mths later at the same specialist.

ETA: both times the dogs went home - why are they keeping the dog overnight?

don't like the way the vet clinic was pushing other products on them, I would go else where I think.

$150 for a broken canine to come out of a Stafford ( including a dental at the same time ) 3 years ago. Getting another broken canine extracted in a couple of weeks time for $150, I've budgeted $200 but my vet has never charged over the quoted amount yet.

Really depends on what is being done but it is not an unreasonable price for a higher end practice.

Prices around here would be similar, for pre-anaesthetic bloods, IV fluids, GA, local anaesthetic nerve blocks, gingivoplasty, high speed drill resection of tooth, suture material to close the extraction site, scale and polish of remaining teeth, overnight in hospital (for large extractions to make sure pain relief is under control and the dog is happy to eat - though this is negotiable and only makes about $15 difference) and pain relief and antibiotics to go home with.

Thanks for all the replies.

It is a higher end practice so I suppose their prices reflect this.

I know the dog wouldn't cope with being there overnight, so I will go with my neighbour and bring her home that night. She was told it would be $55.00 for overnight stay

She never eats when she's at the vet

Neighbour is a pensioner and has been taking the dog to these vets for 9 years and has always asked for pensioner discount and been told no! When she siad that she might have to get a second opiion, they suddenly said yes she could have 10% discount.

Cheers

The pre op blood tests would bump up the price a bit. And I really don't think that an overnight stay is necessary. Is the vet insisting on this?

Payed $392 for my female pugs major dental a year and a half ago.

This included:

Removing 5 teeth

Clean

pain injection

antibiotic injection

anasthesia

half day hospitalisation

So does our Miss B - the only way to get them under GA for less than $150 is if we're castrating your cat

With regards to me saying that we keep animals in hospital overnight, it's only really in cases where there are several extractions. We have a nurse that lives on premises and who can hand feed tasty chicken, or give pain relief if the vets want it administered during the night. If they stay overnight, they will often stay on fluids as well. Generally you will pay a half day hospitalisation for a day procedure, so the difference between that and staying overnight is often not that much. If the dog (or cat) is going to stress too much then we send them home on the same evening, it really just depends.

That's insane. Our clinic charges more than that for the anaesthetic alone

I think it's wonderful

Nice caring vet, awesome service and not had an issue in four years.

ETA: another coming out in two weeks time.

Last bill for canine extraction on a Stafford $161.50, just a touch over quoted amount.

Dentals really do depend what tooth needs to be removed and why it needs to be removed. As others have said, some require drilling the tooth in half first and then removing. Healthy teeth that have a fracture (such as a slab fracture) can take a long time to remove, because ultimately the root on that tooth is still healthy and very well attached. When giving an estimate for a dental, vets will give you a costing of the higher end of the bracket. This allows for the time for the tooth removal, and also the possibility of finding other teeth that need extracting once a full examination can be done under anaesthetic or once tartar has been removed.

Pre Anaesthetic Bloods $75

General Anaesthetic $150

Scale & Polish $100

Extraction $100 – 150

Analgesic Injection $15

Antibiotic Injection $15

Oral Antibiotics $25

Hospitalisation $20 (is she staying overnight to remain on fluids, post GA?)

Recheck free $0

This would be $500 - $550. A $600 estimate is more than adequate, in case the extraction does take a lot longer than expected.

If she was having pre & post anaesthetic fluid therapy, that would be an extra $50. Most clinics include fluids during all anaesthetics included into the price.

I paid $140 for my Belgian to have a back molar removed, she had a slab fracture of the tooth. The price included ABs to take home. I know my vet is very reasonable, but in your case I would definitely shop around.

I cant remember but I think around the 500 mark for a molar extraction...then another 250 a week later when his face swelled up because root had been left in. Vet magnanimously told me he was only charging half to remove the root because it was his fault. I didnt bother having an argument about it because it's the nearest clinic incase we have an emergency.

About $250.00 to have a few out. GA, tooth scale.

Thought I might go there myself? :)

Maybe the op's friend should ask around at local vets for prices. They can vary a lot.
