Are you a member of your local breed club (if there is one)? If you are a member, what kinds of activities take place that you are involved in? If you are not a member, why not? What kinds of activities would you like to see more of in your local breed club? Is your breed club involved in Breed rescue? Sorry that this limits those who's breeds to not have a breed specific club... but if you'd like to contribute to the thread in other ways (past clubs, interstate breed clubs, partial group clubs etc) please feel free. Yes I am a member of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club of Vic If you are a member, what kinds of activities take place that you are involved in? I show mainly, also some obedience and used to do flyball (family reasons I stopped). If you are not a member, why not? N/A What kinds of activities would you like to see more of in your local breed club? The club recently ran a gymkana day which was excellent for the 'pet' people. I think more focus needs to be on more of these sorts of days as to include the people outside of showing more. Is your breed club involved in Breed rescue? I can't really answer the questions and you know I think the wei club does the most awesome job! What kinds of activities would you like to see more of in your local breed club? I can answer this though... I would love to see a gundog club/gundog breed or part group club run the gundog ability test and gundog obedience/retrieveing/socialization days. The club really only organises the two shows each year If you are not a member, why not? What kinds of activities would you like to see more of in your local breed club? Activities for non show people. However there is alot of resistance in the club to organising anything like this. It annoys me no end but until we get more pet owners in then we cant organise fun events, but we wont get more pet owners unless we are already running them Is your breed club involved in Breed rescue? The locations the Rottweiler Club of Vic normally gather for activities is too far from me, plus my dog is not too good with other dogs, we'd end up looking like fools. She also doesn't have pedigree papers, so I'm not sure we would be permitted to join. What kinds of activities would you like to see more of in your local breed club? To be honest I'm not completely sure what breed clubs even do. Obvly I don't show, so besides that and obedience training etc, there's not much that appeals to me as a pet owner to join, I would like if they had herding or carting workshops - but they maybe already do, I just don't know about them. Are you a member of your local breed club (if there is one)? i am a member of the newly founded (but as yet unaffiliated) Weimaraner Social Club of WA I am not a member of any English Setter clubs - there are only two in Australia and not in WA. I am a member of an overseas ES club though. If you are a member, what kinds of activities take place that you are involved in? The social club does not yet have shows (won't until we are affiliated - the old club folded in early 2000s, so we are slowly building up a memberbase), but we do 3-4 social meets a year.. So far this year, we have already had two, with another this weekend coming up (fundraiser). Last year we held a garage sale fundraiser, several BBQs, etc. This year we are very excited about holding a Tracking Day for Weimaraner members - this is in conjunction with the Tracking Club and all proceeds from the day will go to the tracking club. We hope to get members interested in activities. Later this year we will be holding an obedience/clicker training workshop and an agility workshop. it seems without shows to run, we can do a lot more for our non-showies. We also hope to sponsor a neuter class later this year, as we have a few members interested in showing their neutered ex showdogs. If you are not a member, why not? I am not a member of the ES clubs in Australia as I have been slack and not joined. What kinds of activities would you like to see more of in your local breed club? I am sure that there are other activities we can do with our members, but I think we are doing a pretty good job of getting our pet people involved in the club. We started out with the main goal that we would not lose sight of pet people as they are the main population of WEi's in WA. We only have about 2-6 weimaraners showing every weekend so hardly worth a main focus! When affiliated and waaaaaaaaaaaaaay down the track I would like to consider running a tracking trial, obeidence trials and maybe even an ET for weims only. Is your breed club involved in Breed rescue? Yes Wei rescue is unfortunately a huge part of what our club does... hence why we have to have so many fundraisers. If you are not a member, why not? Because my local breed club doesn't hold trials that I partake in, I don't show, and to my knowledge they don't hold fun days were owners of the breed can get together like other clubs do. If they held fun days and once I start retrieving I may join, if I am accepted, as I've heard that it isn't a free for all membership - I could be wrong, though. What kinds of activities would you like to see more of in your local breed club? Obedience and agility trials would be good as other breed specific clubs hold these! I'd also like to see them hold fun days for pet owners and those of us who don't show or are not a breeder. To my outside knowledge, the Lab Club mainly caters for show people and a bit of retrieving. If they got pet owners involved, I think it would be beneficial to the breed. Is your breed club involved in Breed rescue? Breed clubs are not about breeders or show people, they're about the breed and should cater to all owners whether breeder or pet. Is your breed club involved in Breed rescue? The previous one wasn't. There are no breed specific clubs for my breeds in the ACT but I am currently a member of two of my breeds NSW clubs, and one Victorian one also. If you are a member, what kinds of activities take place that you are involved in? I have been involved in conformation shows, obedience trials, tracking training, club picnics and breed workshops that the NSW Vizsla Club has put on. And probably more I have been to an agility trial and obedience trial (at the Nationals) that the NSW GSP Club has conducted. I have been to a Utility Gundog test the Vic GSP club conducted in conjunction with the Vic Weim club. I would go to more of their events if I was closer. The NSW Vizsla club produces an excellent Newsletter, and I would be a member of that club for the Newsletter alone! They also produce a Calendar from Club members photo's, T-shirts, cards etc. They really do provide for all types of memebrs, from show people and breeders, to the 'pet owner'. The Vic GSP Club also produces a nice Newsletter with lots of useful information. If you are not a member, why not? I don't know why I'm not a member of the NSW Whippet club. I don't really know what they offer, but haven't seen much more than shows which is my last interest. I'm not actively training or trialing my Whippet, maybe if I was I would be. What kinds of activities would you like to see more of in your local breed club? The Vizsla club puts on a hell of a lot of activities. It really does cover most interstes!! I would hate to stretch the committee any further, but presonally I would like all Vizsla clubs to promote the working side of the breed more through club activities. I'd love to see a Vizsla Club somewhere in Australia conduct a field trial, a retreiving trial or a Utiltiy Gundog Ability test! A Retrieving Ability Test would even be a good start The NSW GSP Club I'd just like to see better communication so I even know what they are conducting.... Is your breed club involved in Breed rescue? The NSW Vizsla Club & the Vic GSP Club are, I'm not sure about the NSW GSP Club. Yes, the Cav. King Charles Spaniel Club of Vic. and more recently have rejoined.... The German Shepherd Obedience Dog Club of Vic. (Eastern Branch) If you are a member, what kinds of activities take place that you are involved in? CKCS have monthly meetings but I work night shiftand can't get to them, they run Breed Specialty Shows, Get involved with Public Information Displays at Shows, have a comprehensive Website that assists with various breed related issues. The GSD Obedience Club is a relaxed Social gathering which I really like. They don't care if your dog is papered or not, so long as it looks like a GSD. They are all about getting the owners educated so there are happy adjusted GSD's out there. If you are not a member, why not? N/A What kinds of activities would you like to see more of in your local breed club? Nothing comes to mind at this time. The committees do a great job in these Clubs and keep very busy. Is your breed club involved in Breed rescue? [/b] The CKCS Club does. I recently fostered an ex puppy Mill Male who is now rehomed with my parents. I'm not sure if the GSD has an official "Rescue". I think they handle things on a case by case level. Member of the Dalmatian Club of Victoria and Gundog Club of Victoria. If you are a member, what kinds of activities take place that you are involved in? For the Dally club, I don't show much anymore so I mainly assist in breed promotion (e.g Dogs Day Out) and obedience/agility demonstrations. I do attend the AGM, send in my dog sports results to the newsletter and I'll be helping on a sub-committee for obedience and agility when we host the Dalmatian Nationals in 2012 For the Gundog club, my membership was part of my "puppy pack" for Em. She is only a youngster but retrieving will be our main association with the club - obedience and agility as well. I will very likely re-join next year. If you are not a member, why not? I'm not sure if there is an ESS club in Vic but I probably wouldn't join as it is likely to be oriented towards showing and Em is working lines. What kinds of activities would you like to see more of in your local breed club? It would be great to have more obedience trials etc within the Dally Club but we had a restricted to Group 7 trial a few years ago and the entry was dismal and just not worth putting on. The club has held a few agility trials but that was before my time. The ET is becoming a bit of an annual event which is great. I think the club is pretty proactive and given only a very few of us compete in dog sports it makes it a bit difficult. Is your breed club involved in Breed rescue? No. It was until fairly recently but legal advice is that public liability is not covered by being a Dogs Vic affiliated club and it is too expensive for the club to maintain. The club secretary ensures that people who contact the club are given as much assistance as possible including being put in touch with their breeder if a member of the club. Yep, I'm a cap and jacket wearing member of the Australian Shepherd Club of Victoria. If you are a member, what kinds of activities take place that you are involved in? The club has loads of activities....an annual speciality champ show, an open show, a members comp, restricted to breed obedience, agility and herding comps, fun days etc. The club also hosts a bi-annual MVA (most versatile Aussie) comp, the only club of it's kind in the country to do so. it's the "pinnacle" trophy for an Australian Shepherd owner....the comp consists of conformation (not the regular spec show, but a separate section just for the MVA participants, where the dogs are judged against the standard by a specialist judge); herding (the breeds original purpose), and obedience or agility. The participants have to compete in conformation, herding and one of the others to qualify. They are awarded scores....and the higher the level of obedience, agility or herding, the higher their scores, then they are added together to decide the winner. Last years winner was DOL member Leopuppy and her boy Leo. I try and get involved in the shows and also whatever else I can (fun days etc) but I'm 2 hours away so probably less involved than I'd like to be. The club also has a Facebook page and an email group. The email group isn't limited to club members although most of them are part of it. What kinds of activities would you like to see more of in your local breed club? None really, they do a great job of encouraging pet owners to join and then giving them a reason to be there. And they get out in public and have stands and displays at expos and events to promote this fantastic breed of dog. Is your breed club involved in Breed rescue? Yes, very much so. Not many Aussies come up in rescue although recently theres been a few and the club are actively involved in identifying them as being in need, rehoming them to the right home and providing ongoing support to the new owners. Their rescue activities are not restricted to the state either. This club seems to be one of the better breed clubs. They exist to promote the breed and do a very fine job of it. Not just for people interested in showing but in all activities and aspects of Aussie ownership. And they are a great resource of knowledge and help for anything to do with the breed. They hold an annual photo competition where members submit pics of their dogs and then 12 are chosen for a calender which is then sold through the club. But this weekend I'm off to a Collie Herding day, then a couple of weeks after that the Collie Fun Day and in 2012 I'm going enter the Collie National with the furkids. If you are not a member, why not? Didn't join previously simply because I was up to my eyeballs in work, let alone dog sports. What kinds of activities would you like to see more of in your local breed club? Promotion of the breed as a versatile working dog, as well as a beautiful and sweet natured house companion. Is your breed club involved in Breed rescue? I believe so. Well I know that some of the members also run Vic Collie Rescue, so in some way there is a connection.
