Guest rhy&ge Posted May 5, 2011 Share Posted May 5, 2011 (edited) In the past week I have said the following to 3 different people: "We're SO excited - we're getting a poodle! " And from those 3 different people I have had the same response: "A poodle?? No! Don't get a poodle! They're horrible! They just bark all the time and snap at people. My *insert random friend/relative here* had a poodle and it was possessive and would tear the house apart! Why don't you get a *insert different breed here* instead??" This has really upset me because what these people are describing aren't "poodles" at all - they're badly trained dogs, and I've personally seen them in LOTS of different breeds. Let me just say that this has given me even MORE incentive to train my poodle beautifully, just to prove these people wrong. Has anyone else experienced these reactions when they have told people they are getting a certain breed of dog?? Teebs Posted May 5, 2011 Share Posted May 5, 2011 I own a Bull Terrier and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, I have lived with the comments for 8 years now, people dont get it and I am over explaining Enjoy your dog and ignore those who know no better - bring your dog up to be the best it can be and you might change some peoples minds, but there are a lot of people who wont change their way of thinking for anyone or anything. It is such a shame people stereotype but I don't think it will ever be something you can stop unfortunately. Do what us PB owners do and make your dog an ambassador for the breed even if it is only going to change 1 opinion it is worth it There is a great song about predjudices, it is about Pits but it is a good song. As with you it gave me extra incentive to train and socialise her well. 3 1/2 years later we have a beautiful, social, friendly dog - a great advertisment for how good Poodles can be! They have so much potential and it is only a failure on the owners part if the do become one of "those" Poodles. Enjoy your puppy - Poodles are FANTASTIC!!!! (I hope it goes quickly!!! ) I suppose everyone is entitled to their opinions, it just makes me sad when I say what dog we're getting and people scrunch up their nose (although, admittedly, other people have squealed (literally) with delight ) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

My mum has a APBT and luckily doesn't get many nasty comments. More often than not she gets what a lovely specimen and no comment on the breed She actually used to walk Chilli with a friend who owned a poodle The two dogs used to just ignore each other I probably get more nasty comments than my mum and I have a boxer . I think it is purely down to his size though and only having one eye I used to get the who's walking who comments when I walked either 3 boxers or 2 boxers and the APBT. Recently a relative told me at a family function that she thought Afghans were dumb - she's a dog trainer and had been house sitting one. I think the rest of the table was waiting for me to go ballistic. You know where all the cutlery stops mid air and you can only hear the clinking in the distance of the other tables. Anyway. I didn't go ballistic or even attempt to have a word about it. I just ignored it - she's not going to change her mind and I can't be bothered with it anymore. If people who should know better are going to say stupid things then they are beneath my notice. Usually I think the problem is something like: "I can't relate to the temperament or appearance of [whatever breed], and I don't have the imagination to recognise that someone else might see more in it". I mean, there are some breeds where I'd prefer to shove a blunt stick in my eye than own one, but the owners of those breeds don't need to listen to me projecting my personal issues about it onto their choices. Apparently I have a child-killer that will soon unpredictably wake up one morning and decide to maul me. Even my mom when she visits tells me that my dog will someday turn vicious and try to eat her. Poodles are wonderful intellegent little (and big ) dogs who quite often are bored witless and would desperately love something to do.
