toy dog
In a nut shell, this is about 'dog shows' and how our constant desires to make something cosmetically perfect has caused irreversible damage in some breeds. It's not the first time something like this has been on tv/ radio and it won't be the last time either because the 'show ring' is the root of all evil. I disagree with Don's comments re: GSDCA's good breed survey - the GSD breed survey conducted here in Australia is not worth the paper it is written on. some people who have seen on tv how "some" show people act, and sometimes i am ashamed to be associated at times, but overall i have to say that most are passionate about their own breeds and want to make a difference, some dont' give a damn and just in it for their own selfish needs buggar the dogs, it takes all sorts in anything where there are a group of people, what they show on tv or what they've read in the media has turned them off dog shows completely, are you in the dog show world are you speaking from experience? sounds like you have gotten a completely negative experience there. i've been in the showworld since 1985 and i disagree completely, usually people say negative things about dog shows or show people when they aren't involved fully and know what goes on. i've had people commenting at work that they think it is all cruel pedigree dogs and the showring. after seeing pedigree dogs exposed mainly. is it possible to explain more why you think the GSD breed survey is bogus
toy dog
Chris did thought point out about a dog they showed on the show this week (a woman who was looking after her sons bitch while he was OS< and had the girl get in with her obviously undesexed male dog), that the tie to say oops was well past, the female should have been desexed already, and that after the girl had the pups, and the owner sighed with relief that all the hard work was now done, he said no it isn't she now has to find good homes for all the puppies. Was a bit shocked that the mum had the bitch whelping outside on the porch, while the make dog was inside where it was warm would have thought you would have wanted her inside? And he did say he now wanted to see the girl at his surgery to be desexed quick smart so no more puppies i remember about 2 years ago seeing an article in either new idea or womens weekly (i don't read these mags but the girls who i work with do and bring them in and put them on the table)he was answering letters from people with pets. one person asked what is the best breed to get for a flat or apartment>? his answer was a cavoodle, spoodle and all the crosses encouraging people to go and buy a dog from a petshop. also they wanted to know about training and his method was completely ridiculous, i can't remember exactly what he said but it was stupid and would not work. so i emailed him and gave him a serve about him encouraging breeding up of crosses and puppy farms etc etc. and next thing i know he is going into a puppy farm raid and advertising about it on the 7pm project. he changed his tune, i gave him heaps of links and it looks like he did take notice of me or others who also gave him a serve. mumtoshelley
All I can say is don burke is a moron, He should stick with gardening. Saying lab cross poodles and all the other cross breeds are better then purebreds.
oakeydoak1
I met a paint stallion bred by Don Burke a few years back. You could not get near him without him trying to kill you. He had hardly been socialised, he had lived in a stable all his life and when he was put in a yard he went biserk he didnt know how to cope. It took months and months and months of rehabilitation to be able to handle him safely. You should have seen him when he first walked on grass! Almost sh*t himself (actually i think he literally did)!
ellies mum
I think it's wise to bear in mind that Mr Burke thrives on conflict. Treat his rave with the dignity it deserves - ignore it. He's got few friends in the media, no TV presence and, I suspect, a magazine that's going south slowly. His days as a person of influence are numbered. Trying to stir up a fight boosts his profile (and he loves attention). Ignore the gnome. I suspect once the baby boomer generation stops listening to him, he'll be just another media dinosaur, clinging desperately to the last vestiges of celebrity he holds. I doubt he'd even get a gig on Dancing with the Stars anymore. One things for sure, he's no better a journalist than he was a gardener I do think Donny is nothing but a wanker...he should stick to digging holes and why not jump in one... the guy is a wanker.. toy dog
i really think that he is trying to bump up his profile again. i heard he has a beef with some breed club many years ago and they could not tell him about some wrong info so he has the personality that cant' be told i read somewhere and is always right, so to get them back and all pedigree breeders promoted the DD, so the DD craze was born. the only losers in this whole thing 15 years later simply because one human had a beef against some other people who owned purebreds, is the poor dogs in puppy farms being bred for profit in their thousands. he is promoting people to keep this trade open in my humble opinion. he is trashing the purebred dog but how can he say that ALL pedigrees have a problem and ALL cross breeds haven't that is a widely vague statement to make. Anyone with a bit of intelligence or a bit of education up their sleeve about all dogs will know the truth. the truth is how i see it, any cross breed any pedigree dog can suffer from health problems. so what's his point??? how can he be so selfish and promote suffering of animals by saying puppy farms are good and petshops selling those pups from puppy farmers are also good. because he is selfish only thinking of himself. J...
I have the latest edition of "Burkes Backyard". You should see the article in that about Pedigree Breeders being the problem and how fantastic pet shops and puppy farms are! I've been waiting for this discussion! If people decide to respond to his drivel then I think this is what it should be aimed at - if you can show the general public that he's encouraging something as horrible as puppy farms and pets in pet shops then they might start to question his arguments. Hopefully educate a few people along the way too.

Sorry, but he didn't look at the links you sent him or take even the slightest bit of notice of anything you may have said in your email. It's highly likely he didn't even read it. He is a HUGE supporter of ACA Breeders which are a HUGE puppy farm groug (they have a few mills).. Don Burke is a pathetic, impotent little man who has a dangerously large ego. He knows the quickest way to get A LOT of attention is to serve up an article about dog breeding and bagging registered breeders... the biggest problem is that the people who DO respond to him are often the uneducated, the bogans and the semi illiterate who carry on like porkchops and hurl abuse at him.. which simply plays directly into his sick little game and it humours him. The sooner he melts into obscurity, the better (and he is on his way there as few under 30's would even know who he was...
Mjosa
I think the run in he had was with the British Bulldog people. I had the dubious honour back in 2001 to be approached by him to get a group of French Bulldogs together to do the road test on them when he was on TV in Bourkes backyard, wish he stayed in his own back yard, anyway he came to Adelaide and we did the road test on the Frenchie and he was, on air very nice about them saying what wonderful pets they are, but after the filming, I did the talk on them for the show, he pulled me aside, saying what a lovely breed they were BUT had I ever thought of crossing them with something else to give them a bit more length in nose and also to help with free whelping, well this know all did not realise that we do have lines that self whelp, I was so disgusted I said I had better things to do and left, I was surprised he even aired the episode. Shazzapug
Doesnt this man breed pure bred horses? How can he draw the conclusion that pure bred breeders are so satan like when they breed dogs but not other species??? dwarf cattle, I think. The cattle are Dexters...and the show he did that he compared the 2 types, one with Chrondodysplasia and one without was very imformative and something that the Dexter breeders Assoc was happy to keep sweeping under the carpet. He lost me when he said his Pugs eyes popped out.

LizT
You are right. In the article he invites pedigree dog breeders to contact the magazine to give their opinion. Starting an discussion/arguement with him gives his opinions value, and we know they don't have any! Sadly, quite a few pedigree dog breeders would respond in a manner that plays right into his hands. If anyone responds, it should be the ANKC. They should speak for all. Yes, PF I can hear the reels being wound in as I type! Hope fully the lines will snap.

Yes, PF I can hear the reels being wound in as I type! Hope fully the lines will snap. yes I remember a new breeder many years ago that allowed Don Jerk to film her dogs. The breed is one that he is known to be very against, and the breed can be snappy. She tied several dogs up to a fence for the camera to pan over. The bitch on the end had a young litter which she was still feeding. Of course the dogs made a lot of noise at the camera and the film crew and the bitch went over the top aggressive. I would not have expected any different from the bitch. But the stupid breeder fell right into his hands. He still to this day demeans the breed. Best not to respond on an individual level to him. And I have no real problem with a person wanting a cross bred dog, what I object to is the hugely inflated prices these people pay, and I really object to them saying a cross bred is better. OSoSwift
I invite him to see my registered pedigree dogs and see my awful puppy farm conditions I am breeding them in. Might have to get them off the lounge for him to have a seat though, and I sometimes cannot shut my mouth because arrogence really gives me the pip....ssooooo, Nah lets just ignore the ignorant, ill informed, know it all, dip stick and lets promote all our wonderful breeders that ARE doing the right thing
