Same Size And Or Exercise?

Hi

I have a new Australian Terrier :D yay she is great very well behaved little girl. Now I want some advice that if in the future I wanted to add another dog. Should I look at something the same size? Or can I look at a bigger dog? Also should I get a dog that has the same exercise requirements? For those people that may have a little dog and a big dog what are there expreiences with how they get along.

My Aussies live with Kelpies, although only one at the moment, and some of their best friends are Danes. Don't forget Aussies don't think that they are small ;) !! Now that you have an Aussie you may not want any other breed.

I don't think you need to stick to little dogs only. If there's a bigger breed you have in mind I think it could certainly work out

Congrats on your new dog! My Aussies have always lived with Irish Wolfhounds and find them very convenient:)

I have only ever had one Aussie at a time but usually have multiple hounds.

Where's the pictures? You can't say you've got a new dog and not put up snaps.

I have always had big and small dogs and never had any issues. The pug I have now is a bit full on so she has very limited time with the Rotties until she settles down more.

I think this is proof if they have the right temperament then anything will work out.

Piper - 2 1/2yo Rottweiler bitch with her new born pups (a few weeks old), Lizzy - Pug pup (about 3 months old) and Muffin - elderly Maltese desexed male.

We had 2 Aussies when I was a kid. We had Kelpies, Border Collies a Dobermann and a GSD at the same time that we had one of them - never had any issues at all with them.

I don't think you need to worry about exercise requirements - nearly all small terriers I know will go and go and go. The bigger dog may get tired though

I think size could be fine depending on temperaments but you would have to watch rough play - I have heard a few stories of little dogs being seriously injured by big dogs playing rough.

Congrats on your new Aussie

I have a small Terrier girl along with a Siberian Husky male and a Dane/Mastiff/Amstaff girl. The two girls are absolutely inseparable, they really are joint at the hip and you will always find them snuggled up together. They are such an odd pair . As for exercise, I walk them all together and I find that Astrid my Terrier has ALOT more energy than my big dogs. Even my Sibe Indie tires out before Astrid.

The only thing I find with the size difference is that Astrid makes good use of our pool fencing. She knows there is a big difference in size so she always crawls under the pool fencing to do her zoomies so the big dogs dont accidently hurt her. She zooms right against the fence so the big dogs can do zoomies with her but cant touch her, smart little cookie . Apart from that, Astrid still plays tug and wrestles with Mala at every opportunity, they are such a great match despite their size difference.

I agree with Austerra, now that you have an Aussie,you might not want to have another breed, & Aussies definately do not think they are small.

My Aussies have played with my In laws Rotties with no problems though, & one of my puppy owners also has a Hungarian Vizla, & they play together with no problems.

I have two small terriers (JRT & Tenterfield) living harmoniously with two Salukis. I don't leave my 16 yr old blind TT guy outside with the Salukis without supervison (because Saluki-zoomies could impact negatively on an old frail blind dog!!), but he can move them off the couch if he wants to get up there - no problems!!

And the blind guy - his name is Zoomie!! ;)

And here I was worried about maybe adding a Rotti to the Collie clan one day. Well you've given me hope everyone. I LOVE the pics btw.

Makes me think more seriously about adding a small breed to my medium-large breed as I go from my 60's to my 70's. Though I still have my doubts about a dog you can't thump with a hard pat across the rib cage.
