Maybe the harness is the answer but in my experience, you couldn't walk her at the same time as another dog. She's much better once she's had a walk. As Juice says, it's a very difficult situation to test her in but also risky, depending on the other dog's size. As you can see though, she was lovely with "Bon" the Bull Terrier but we were careful and took our time. Her owners told me last weekend that she has always killed lizards and birds in the yard, so she obviously does have some sort of prey drive. My own dogs do that, they are terriers so not unusual. Paws and Hooves, her original rescuers, could have stepped in at some time to help but apart from posting her on this forum, that's been it. It could be an issue taking a dog back if it was adopted out as a puppy and came back as a 6 year old with need of some socialisation training... Ellie was not difficult for me to handle on the lead when a cattle dog came out to it's fence barking it's head off at us. She was excited and wanted to go over to to other dog, but the fact that she corrected with a tug and a "come on Ellie" has me thinking that she was more interested in trying to play with the other dog than to respond unfavourably and attack it. She is 33-34kgs, so an experienced hand would have her working on lead really well without paying any heed to dogs screaming swear words at her from behind their fences. She has shared accommodations with another dog in the past, so I'd think that maybe with the right doggie companion who could keep up with her play drive, she may actually be fine. Then again, a more mature person or persons who wanted a faithful, loyal, and loving companion dog might be a perfect home for her too. Her Majesty Dogmad Posted December 15, 2011 Author Share Posted December 15, 2011 There have been a few enquiries, some just make an initial enquiry by email, others I've spoken to. One lady last weekend wanted a companion for her kelpie in a shared garden with neighbours. Dog had to be good with small children. I explained Ellie's a big girl and seems OK with kids but I also asked how the dogs would be exercised. She said "on a lead". I said I thought it could be a challenge to walk Ellie at the same time as another dog and she said she'd do it separately. Then she wrote an email to say she'd decided that would be too hard .... This sort of sums up where we've been going with enquiries but I'm still hopeful and things are pretty quiet generally on the enquiry front. I went and walked Ellie last week (Thursday I think it was) and she was so happy to see me. She's such a sweety. I have my car back on the road now (since yesterday ) so will be able to visit her more. I will also be taking her some dried chicken necks and a ball for Chrissy. Hoping to get out there tommorow or the next day, just hope this blasted rain holds off... It's been horrible here weather wise. Will update with pics once I go and visit her. I left in such a hurry when I left to walk her that I forgot to take it T. Same for my camera. I have no problems with her on the collar though and find her very manageable, but maybe that's because I am used of walking huskies. I will take it when I go next and give it a try. Her Majesty Dogmad Posted December 23, 2011 Author Share Posted December 23, 2011 Unfortunately no, very disappointing but it isn't a good time of year with so many dogs being dumped. Things will pick up again and I'm sure Ellie will be lucky either with a foster carer or new home. I have had one lovely enquiry on her from Canberra but she is not suitable for the home for various reasons however DOL Member Juice alerted me to a Husky cross and it looks like she is a very good fit with what they want. They want to meet her in Jan so fingers crossed as she's also in real need of a great home. As I always find with this type of scenario, Ellie is managing to help other dogs while she waits and her own place will come in time. They've had a Belgain Shepherd before and there are a couple of potential issues which may mean Ellie is not for them. I took Jack with me for the first time. She loved him and he loved her. We gave her her late Xmas presents (a toy and some dried chicken necks) which she loved and took her for a walk around the block. I wanted to see how she'd go with Jack and she done really really well. When we got back to the house (M wasn't home) Ellie was so reluctant to go back down the driveway. Jack got teary too towards the end (as you'll see in the pics I upload shortly) he is sad that we have to leave her there and so badly wants to bring her home. Driving home he says to me "Mummy we should get lots of dogs like that and not find them homes". (in other words keep them, Dog love him ). He cannot wait to go back to see her again. Some more pics to come. I am just uploading them onto flickr. (it was at Jacks request that most of these pics were taken. We took 50 odd. Obviously I can't upload them all here. We had to stop every 5 mins so he could pose. ). Her present wrapped. Her tail was going 100 mile an hour. And unwrapped. He's won her heart for sure now with some dried chicken necks. They were wrapped in nice blue paper but Jack got carried away and ripped it open for her. She knows there is something tasty in there, look at her licking her lips... Presents & introductions are done. Time for a walk. Love this one. Look how proud Jack is. Anyone would think she was his dog. Jack trying to scam another pic. He's pointing to where he wants to sit.
