A mastiff-cross has attacked and killed another dog and bitten a woman at Flinders Park.

The mastiff-cross, Pistol, broke its collar as his owner was taking him for a walk near Flinders Park Oval about 11.45am today.

Pistol has since been impounded, pending an investigation.

After running to the oval, the dog attacked a small, white dog.

Charles Sturt Council workers used a shovel to get Pistol off the other dog. Pistol then attacked the woman walking the small dog, leaving her with puncture wounds to one of her arms.

The woman, 63, was taken to hospital for treatment.

Charles Sturt Council worker Allen Hood said the dog that was attacked, described as a shih tzu, was taken to a vet and put down.

Another Charles Sturt Council worker, Scott Sachse, said Pistol was ruthless.

"We drove in here (the oval car park) and this bulldog was all over the little dog," he said.

"We jumped out of the truck and went over to try and get the dog off the little dog.

"As soon as we managed to get it off the little dog, the dog turned its attention to her (the lady). It really latched on to her arm.

"Her whole arm just swelled up and there were puncture wounds. You wonder what would've happened to her if nobody came along."

Pistol's owner, Joe Ciccone, who lives near the park, said he was powerless to stop the attack.

"I was walking him home and this (his collar) just snapped," he said.

"I couldn't catch him because I have a broken foot.

"He's normally pretty placid and pretty calm."

Mr Ciccone said he was oblivious to the attack after Pistol broke free and previously had no problems with the 18-month-old dog.

He said the collar, which he bought only two months ago, should never have snapped and that he would take it up with the manufacturer.

It's shitty for Pistols owner that the dogs collar broke but why would anyone walk a large powerful young dog while they have a broken foot? I guess hindsight is a wonderful thing, but honestly!

1. Get the reporter some English lessons. I doubt Mr Ciccone was oblivious to the attack as he witnessed it.

2. Sorry but I sincerely doubt this dog has given not a single indication of aggression before. What else is the owner going to say... "I knew he had issues"????

It was on tv - the owner was clueless and when seemingly asked what he thought in regard to the dog being taken away (his dog) by council andmaybe being put down. oh well will just get another one. He didn't seem all that devastated did say wasnt much he could do as he had a fractured foot.

His attitude just came across as shocking - as one of those owners that should not be owning any type of dog. And yet showed the collar - no extra harness or choke chain to control the dog just a normal flat collar that appeared to have ripped through.

And regardless on attacking the small dog once the council workers got it off its target it then turned on the old lady who would have been in a state by then? Human aggressive dog - doubt the owner will be getting it back.

The owner wasn't there when it happened. Council workers followed the dog back to his house after beating it off with shovels.

The poor dog in question was an elderly 12yr old being walked by the owners neighbor. The local vet was called to the scene but the small dog had been eviscerated and didn't have a chance and was humanely put to sleep.

Thoughts and prayers with the family. My worst nightmare.

Reading the article im furious the owner of the large dog not once apologised or expressed remorse for what happened, only that he was going to complain to the manufacturer about the broken collar. What a joke. Happy to pose for a photo but not once said sorry.

I haven't seen any more than a couple of brief news reports in ad breaks, however I don't think we can assume the owner didn't say sorry, the media will put on what they want to put on - he could have said it and they never showed it. I'm not saying he DID say sorry, but we can't always believe what the media wants us to. And I haven't seen the full report.

What a moron this owner was. So many people want these powerful animals under their control and yet they have no idea how to manage said dog safely, out in public. i'm sick to death of reading about these scenarios. Half of them don't give a toss about putting other people and their pets in danger.

I have neighbours with a nasty large staffy cross, they don't even have a collar on it, have it loose in the local park, no fencing and so on. It is dog aggro and they just let it out their front door, straight across the road when it saw another dog.

People should not be allowed to own a dog unless they've been trained, had homes inspected for sufficient fencing etc, especially with large powerful breeds and then we wouldn't have all the attacks on people and other animals. Needs to be a whole lot more difficult to own a pet, I'm sorry to say.

Speaking of staffys off leash. The worst thing I ever saw was when I was driving down South Road in Adelaide and stopped at a red light. A person on the left was in his front yard with his staffy off leash and the gates wide open. I didn't think anything of it until I looked to my right and saw an older gent walking his golden retriever. As soon as the staffy saw the golden he lowered his head and charged at it, right across South Road and the lights had turned green. I didn't move my car and could not do anything in those seconds, but I saw the staffy charge right under an oncoming car and become wrapped up under the front wheels with a horrific sound of screeching brakes and crunching. It was the most sickening thing I've seen in a long time. This could happen to any dog, but it is inexcusable to not be able to manage a dog in such an area, be it a park or by a main road.

They showed an interview with the owner on Sunrise this morning. The owner said ‘the lady wasn’t killed, so its all right’ and when asked about the dog, he said oh well it was only a dog, they can get another one. He was a total moron who obviously didn’t care too much about the consequences of what happened.

Yep that's what I got too. The interview with him was shocking - no remorse and a never mind so what attitude. Moron.

Also during the interview he said 'It takes two to tango'......wtf,....... he is an idiot.

That poor little dog, 13 years old, and his life had to end so traumatically.

It makes me so angry that people like that are allowed to own a dog!!

Well at the very least now he has proven himself to be an idiot he should be banned from getting another dog until he can show he is capable of reasonable behaviour and thinking where dogs are concerned. If thats ever likely.

The council should consider issuing him with a Court attendance notice with the aim of having him banned from owning dogs. The interview with him has shown he is incapable of understanding the responsibility of owning a dog in my opinion.

There's a good chance they'll just destroy the dog and be done with it though. It's a big process to have someone banned from owning dogs.

No doubt the broken collar was to blame for the whole event (insert sarcasm here)

A sad but too common senario. A well raised socialised dog doesnt just randomly attack unless provoked.

What an ...hole! That poor little dog and lady! Obviously the dog had aggression issues or he wouldn't have attacked if the collar snapped. If my dogs collar snapped all they'd do is walk around and start smelling things or go up and play bow. This dog should have had more gear on it to prevent it from breaking off and possibly a muzzle.

Probably the worst thing I've ever seen in regards to dog aggression is a young bull arab type dog on the back of a ute with NOTHING to secure him, the guy was driving and the dog saw another dog being walked and started growling and barking rather ferociously then leaped from the back of the ute into the path of an oncoming car. I'm pretty sure that would have been some expensive court dates for that owner. The lesson which is not being heeded is SECURE YOUR AGGRESSIVE DOGS EFFECTIVELY!
