Terrible Dog Attack In Broken Hill

We had a terrible dog attack here on the weekend :( a couple were walking down a lane when 3 dogs who apparently dug out of their yard attacked them. Both pol were mauled but the man sustained awful injuries. The police use a taser and capsicum spray to stop the dogs, but the dogs then went for the paramedics so the police fired a shot to scare the dogs off. I believe the dogs have been PTS and ive not heard the breed or anything else.

Those poor ppl :( had it been a child I imagine they would have died from the injuries. I can't imagine the horror of being mauled by 3 dogs.

I had a similar incident while living there in 2006.

A teenage boy could barely restrain his dog from attacking my two adult Maremmas.

Its a good thing, all three dogs were on leads.

The most disturbing part was the dog's aggression was not territorial, protective or provoked.

Simply a Dangerous dog. :mad

M-sass I just can't fathom what would make 3 dogs intent on killing and destroying ppl for no reason? it wasn't a bite it was a sustained attack. I've lived here for 8 yrs and never had a dog threaten me. I have had my dogs rushed at by other dogs when I've been walking them but that's about it. Every time I think about that poor couple I feel sick :( .. And also so grateful it wasn't a child.

Sounds like they were guard dogs?

"Mr Taylor says the dogs have never hurt anyone before.

"No, never, because they've never been outside of the yard, they were always locked in the yard beside the workshop here. "

A number of farmers around here keep guard dogs and they are super scary. A couple got out once and came up my driveway. I have no doubt that they would have attacked me if I had been on the other side of the gate. The way one of them looked at me and growled was not pleasant.

Another did get out and attacked my dog as I was walking past. Very scary incident.

And I used an umbrella to fend off a guard mareema whilst I put him back in a garden!

These dogs are all well contained and in the 12 years I have lived here have only seen guard dogs out 3 times. But each of those times could have resulted in a tragedy.

Three mix breed dogs apparantly.........I can just imagine what the breed mix will be :mad

For goodness sake is there one thread that you can keep your hatred of dogs from :mad

The main triggers for dog aggression are not breed specific.

My thoughts are with the people who had to fight off three dogs I hope they are healing okay and dont suffer to many physical or mental scars :(

Yep - I'm sure a number of people were bitten by aggressive small breeds this weekend as well, not news due to minimal injury.

I hope the couple recover quickly, it sounds like an awful sustained attack. :(

Oh there will be reasons alright. Three dogs equals a pack. Some dogs will do things in a pack they'd never do alone.

Could have been a territorial response, could have been a predatory one.

But it certainly doesn't sound like these were well socialised dogs does it?

I'd hazard a guess as to age, sexual entirity and the use of these dogs... such attacks aren't exactly unpredictable.

When will owners learn? "Dogs have never left the yard". Could have seen this coming miles away.....

The guard dogs around here never leave their yards. The one that attacked Brock was kept in a small run.

what is the point of a guard dog in a small run? It's only good if someone wants to break into the run isn't it?

Poor people, it woould have been terrifying, I hope both of them recover well from their injuries.

many are in a small run during business hours- then have the freedom of the premises after work.

I know of quite a few businesses in town with yard/guard dogs ... and , although the dogs don't get walked along streets' have access to owners' houses etc- they don't have a bad life . One pair in particular wander around the business during work hours greeting customers ..then are left in the yard overnight/at weekends. they are well cared for and are very happy with their lot - having known nothing else...and , trust me are NOT approachable when on guard :o

Another I know of is on a long chain during business hours ..and can be patted etc by customers- just don't try it if his owner's not present !

A produce store had a dane guard ... she was very effective , too! she saw lots of people during business hrs ... was extremely protective of 'her' building/yard and was much appreciated.

I love how these guys switch 'on'& 'off '..and think there are many dogs worse off...many 'yard/guard' dogs do not have any sort of 'social' life , or basic care, I know...

There are some good statistics and case studies out of the US about dogs involved in fatal dog attacks (which this could easily have been). In the majority of cases (21 out of 33 incidents in 2010 from memory), the dogs involved in attacks were what the study calls resident dogs, as opposed to family dogs.

Resident dogs are those isolated by the owner from regular, positive human interactions. Owners often keep resident dogs isolated on chains or in junk-yards, or allow their dogs to roam unattended. Owners of resident dogs often fail to provide basic humane care for their dogs, resulting in animals that suffer from malnutrition or chronic disease or illness. http://nationalcanin...eport_Final.pdf

In terms of breed, from the same document,

in 22 of those attacks it was not possible to assign definite breed identification to the dog involved. Of the 11 to which a breed definition could be reasonably assigned, 8 different breeds of dog were identified.
I haven't found any comparable case studies in Australia, but there are quite a lot of useful statistics around if you go looking for them.

I can't see that the breed of dog in this incident is of much relevance in comparison to the circumstances of three dogs who are probably not much socialised with humans, in a high state of arousal by being free in an unfamiliar environment and in a pack.

Its quite sad that you seem to need attention and can only get it by baiting people over the Internet.

Ignoring from now on, why did it take me so long?!

Very sad incident, I hope the victims recover.
