Need To Find A Good Verterinary Surgeon

We have a decision to make regarding our latest member of the family, a now 13 week old rotti pup. We have been informed that he has a cervical mucoseles, which is basically a big pouch of saliva that has collected in his throat. Its pressing on his windpipe and oesophagus, so its pretty serious.

The vets have drained it today, but that is not a long term alternative, surgery is the accepted option. The local vets are reluctant to do the op, understandable as its a delicate area with the jugular and nerves in that area. So we have to decide if we look at the having the op done, or make the alternative decision.

If we can get a vet in Darwin it would be preferable, as I can stay with friend up there and would look at driving up there. Adelaide is an option as well, if I can find accomodation close to the vets that wont break my bank. If we go the Adelaide way we would have to look at flying down as I have no experience driving in a big city like Adelaide.

Can anyone suggest a specialist vet in Adelaide of Darwin that we can look into?

I am sure you will get lots of vet reccomendations but i would just like to say that if you come to Adelaide and need some help with anything I am happy to help out :) and good luck with your pup

That's a lovely offer, KHM. Piperspal's puppy could recuperate under Earl's ears.

Thinking of you and your puppy, Piperspal.

*LOL* He'd drown in the drool puddle - no problem with Earl's saliva collecting anywhere except on everything within a 100 m radius :)

Thanks everyone, another bad turn Tonka is back at the vets in intensive care. He went downhill when he came home, from bouncing around to not being able to breathe, drooling lots and panting really fast. He has had xrays and apparently has pheumonia!!! poor little bugger cant take a trick at the moment.

KHM many thanks for that kind offer, if he gets through this I may take you up on it!!!!! And Danny and Dobesrock, thanks for the well wishes, he needs all the prayers he can get.

Consider the Companion Animal Health Centre at the Vet School at Roseworthy 8313 1999. Or the Speialist Centre on Magill Road. They have some great people too. Good luck. It sounds like you don't have time to burn. I'd consider a true specialist surgeon if it were me - and quickly.

We have used the adelaide veterinary specialist and referral centre, on Magill road too when our lab required a difficult cancer removal surgery. We were very happy with them.

I hope your pup recovers from his ordeal, poor baby :(

OK another update, Tonka made it through the night, only chewed his drip out once and they put an E-collar on him. Apparently now he is much brighter, letting them all know that he is better and will be released at 1pm. The diagnosis about what caused him to crash and be listed as critical? Double lung pneumonia.

I will be having a discussion with the vet about this, considering he has been to the vets 3 times in the last 2 weeks, been on antibiotic and antinflammitories and they had him under a GA yesterday, how was this missed? How did he develop pneumonia when he is on antibiotics anyway?!

I am a little suss on how quick it came on, they said it could be caused by being tubed? Not sure what that would have to do with it?

So shall pick him up, take him home and shake him!!!!! Just kidding, he will be getting spoiled rotten  This dog is giving me grey hairs!!!!!!!!!

Jeepers, ICU to home the next day at 1pm? I hope they know what they're doing!

I'd be getting a second opinion if at all possible, poor little baby, hope he perks up for you.

Hi piperspal,

Try:

Adelaide Veterinary Specialist & Referral Centre

http://www.vetreferrals.com.au/

Best wishes for your boy and your decision making process.

Very happy to help with transport if you need. You're also welcome to stay at mine, too, though we'd struggle to fit another dog into the household. We could try.

Thanks Leema, the offer is appreciated. Am waiting on a couple of surgeons to call me back.

I have used Noah Crossing at Lewiston for many years & always been very happy with their services & treatment of my animals. Many breeders use this vet.

You may need a specialist for your puppy, no idea, however if you would like to phone & discuss their number is 8524 2260.

If you prefer to stay on your own there is an excellent caravan park on Highway 1 that allows dogs.

I went to see someone there & was quite suprised at how pleasant is was. The very best of luck with you puppy. This must be so distressing for both you & the pup.

If you end up in Adelaide I am happy to assist you in any way I can.

Definate second to dobesrock suggestion re The ark vet practice, also if Townsville is closer for you then Adelaide there is the james Cook University dept Vet medicine which have top facilities and may take on your pup as certainly a top priority.
