Having Trouble Sourcing Hills Prescription Diet

Hi, I'm trying to source Hills Z/D Low allergen kibble for Koda. She's been doing fine on that but it's now costing us $190 a bag from the vet here in Karratha wa. Most placed online either don't deliver to WA or are out of stock. Does anyone know where I can source this product from. Is there an issue with supply? The vet has had delays in getting it as well.

Thanks.

Can't help you with Hills however my girl was on the Hills Z/D and after about 4 weeks on that I switch her over to the Royal Canin Hyperallergenic as the Hills still aggravated her sensitive gut and found the RCH suited her soooo much better!!

Both the Hill Z/D and the Royal Canine Hyperallergenic are hydrolised so they are very similar. Both can only be purchased through a vet but the RCH for us was just so much better than the Hills. I would never go back to the Hills now so she will probably be on the RCH forever.

I have just looked on www.hillspet.com.au and couldn't even find the dry you're looking for, listed

I used to fed my guys the z/d ULTRA Allergen-Free, would this be suitable for Koda?

You can get it at https://www.thevetshed.com.au/ for $108 & $18 shipping,,but it's only a 8kg bag.

Yeah I noticed that too and was a bit miffed as the vet didn't say it wasn't being made any more. The ultra is the next one up. She is fine on both but the low allergen one was a bit more economical. This is so annoying. you spend months and hundreds of dollars to find something they can tolerate then the companies change. She used to be alright on supercoat sensative but they changed the ingredients quite a bit with no warning and didn't even update their web site by the time it hit the shelves...will have a look at the RCH as well but might have to resort to the ZD ultra and that has been hard for the vet to get as well......sigh.

I have been trying to get some Hills L/D dry food from the vets for over a week now since Renae was diagnosed with a liver problem.

I remember Jules P telling me it might be hard to get atm.

I said to the vets when they ordered it what they had heard, and they said oh it will be ok.. Well they haven't got it in yet in all that time :mad

I will pop in early next week to ask again, but it sounds like it a problem everywhere ! My dog is meant to have this serious problem yet i cant get my hands on this food ! grrrrr

It may be worth while to try this company (Oveds)as they have it. http://ovedshorseandpetstore.com.au/Dog-Products/Dog-Food/Hill-s-Prescription-Diet/Hill-s-Prescription-Z/d-Ultra-Low/2079-Hill-s-Prescription-Diet-Canine-z/d-Ultra-Allergen-Free-7.98kg.html

You need to go right through 'check out' to find the postage costs but you can always cancel/delete the 'Cart' if it costs too much.

Worth a try anyway.

My vet informed me this week that there are supply issues with Hills they hope to resolve within the next few weeks although she reminded me that this has happened before and taken a lot longer than a few weeks to resolve. Last time it was something to do with import licence. I wanted the smallest bag of U/D and ended up getting the largest bag as that was the only size they had. Unbelievably expensive! I have never ordered online so can't help with suggestions on supplier.

I have also had a dog on Z/D Low Allergy which for some reason suited him much better than the Ultra. Last time the Hills supply dried up I bought the RCH which he tolerated well. If I remember correctly Koda has similar issues to my dog so the RCH would be worth a try. I can totally understand how frustrating and disappointing it is that after finally finding a food that suits you can't get it.

Hope you can get something sorted out soon.

Hills was the only prescription diet available for so long it has become the natural recommendation of vets.

This doesn't mean that it is the only choice.

For my girl who has IBD and is intolerant to all normal dry dogfoods, RCH has proven to be far superior to Hills Z/D.

After her last hospitalisation she was still not 100% using the Hills Z/D, but when I transferred her over to RCH she really improved. On Hills she still had a small amount of pain and also loose motions.....on RCH she is back to normal. She will probably remain on RCH for the rest of her life but that's OK as long as she does well on it.

RCH can only be purchased from a vet but maybe it is more easily available!

Except when they change the formula, which they did on the RCH that Grumpy ate. The Hypoallergenic wasn't a replacement, it was a separate product.

It pretty much is my only choice if I want my dog alive :( There is a RC hepatic food which is better than the Hills version but it isn't available in Australia.

Isn't that interesting!

I can only speak for my experience of RCH and say that it is a much better fit for my girl than Hills Z/D.

The problem is when I asked the specialist vets about changing to a different food, the only way they say is to try it and see. Not very scientific!!

They also say that testing for food allergies is not reliable at this stage although I know that Ernie has had testing done in the USA, the specialists I spoke to do not rate that method.

I hadn't ordered online as by the time I added postage it was about the same as the vet. But the vet is now selling the ZD low allergen for $190....that's a huge mark up. I know we are in the middle of nowhere but I really think they shouldn't be making a huge profit out of food that is a necessity not a nice to have for the animals. I think I will give the RCH a trial as well so then perhaps we have to foods to choose from since the companies seem to be unreliable.

Question for those with tummy issues, have you been able to put your dog on a product such as ZD then after a while move to a cheaper product with some consideration?

Yep, well I have ordered a bag of both so I can solve the initial problem of no food and also try out the RCH as well. Hopefully it will be fine too and it will give us 2 choices at least online for her. She seems to be tolerating some supercoat sensative in her food but I don't want to push it but we are having to use a bit to stretch out the food and budget.
