Sorry Not Dogs....bats!

Sorry to put this in general but I didn't know where else to go.

I took my folded up jeans off the edge of the bath (where they had been overnight) , put my legs in and looked down as I was pulling them up and got a bit of a shock! At first I though mouse but in an instant I recognised BAT! A teeny tiny little bat!

Can anyone please help me as to what I should do with it. I'd really like it to live! I am located in Mannum SA and am willing to drive it to care if there is anyone available to who does such things?? I just left it bundled back up in the jeans as they were on the bath.

For size comparison.

HELLLLLLLLLLP ! TIA :)

thanks guys. I called Fauna Rescue. I tipped it into a take away container full of tissues with a well sealed lid & air holes and will try to release it tonight as described by the FR lady. If that doesn't go so well I can take it to a carer 1/2 hrs away.

When I tipped it from my pants into the container it spread its wings and there was no sign of damage.

Aww, it must have wandered into the house and looked for a dark, enclosed place to roost. Bats go into torpor when they roost, so they often can't fly away if disturbed because they are too slow and sleepy. That is a small one even for a microbat. Maybe it's a forest bat. Many of those are insy weensie. Most species rarely bite or scratch when they are in torpor. I have met a few exceptions. Best to handle them with gloves on. They are so little most types of gloves can be protective enough. Just got to make sure with the reduced dexterity and sense of touch you don't drop them or squish them. I've always thought they feel very fragile.

Maybe you could put a bat box up in your yard. Studies show bats use boxes even in the middle of suburbia. As long as they don't get taken over by bees or ants. It gives them more places to roost so less competition with other animals.

ADELAIDE BAT CARE

This lady specialises in bats and she LOVES them. Is very conscientious and even has a humidity crib for them. She really is devoted and quite knowledable.

Thanks for the link. I emailed to see if their opinion concurs with fauna rescue.
