A Big Kudos To Dr Tony Read

Long story cut short as possible. One of our Cavs 'Joey' at some stage managed to get his cornea scratched somehow, presumably by one of the many other pets.

When it first became obvious (wasn't straightaway) we took him to our local vets, and they said it looked fairly serious and they gave him some gel type drops (after doing some tests for dry eye etc) , It actually ended up prolonging the problem. A few people including Joey's breeder highly recommended us Dr Tony Read, so we asked our vets for a referral to go see him.

We got in fairly quickly but didn't get him first up but his partner of his clinic, who did his best to treat the problem with more tests and better eye drops. He did say we needed to come back tho for another check up on it.

Last Thurs my husband took Joey for his check up down to Adelaide (bit of a drive for us, but you got to do what you have to do for our precious pets) and this time we got the head one Dr Tony Read and he found another abrasion under the other one and recommended to my husband 2 options, 1st was he could perform a procedure there and then (but its not a 100 percent successful one) but he thought it would be best to try that one first, or he could have a proper operation (but that would be another day). My husband decided it best to go with the procedure since Dr Read could do it then and there.

He was given some general eye drops for after, and we were told he had to have a cone over head for a long as possible as so Joey couldn't rub his eyes in any way, and to keep him protected from the pets (which we have had him in a crate)

Anyway this morning Joeys eye was really bad and mucusy and looking like he was going blind Rang the specialist and he said if you were closer, id suggest coming in so he could look at it, but since we are a long way away, he said get him to our local vets and get them to write a script for this particular drops (that are for humans too) and then we could get it filled out at one of our local chemist.. and to then ring him back first thing Monday.

So off to vet Hubby went with Joey, and she said it did look infected, so would write the script out as they didn't have those particular drops there. None of our local chemist had these drops in stock !! One of them rang so many other nearby towns for us but no one had any

So its now about 11.30 am and hubby is worried we not going be able to get any so he called Dr Tony Reed up again and told him about our situation. Without any hesitation he said if you can get him here, I will come in and meet you at the clinic ( He doesn't work weekends) . So hubby drove in all our wet and very wild weather conditions down to the specialist (Anzac highway for those of you who know places in SA) We live in Goolwa. The specialist could see how bad it was and said Joey has had a rare reaction to the procedure that he had not anticipated. He numbed Joey's eye and cleaned it all up and tested his eye again and put some more drops in. This took about sa good hour !

Anyway he was able to give us these particular drops and has instructed us with it all and we have to call him up on Monday to let him know how Joey is going.

He is not going charge us for the out of hours consult, only for the drops.

But we are very impressed that he come in to see to Joey on his day off ( he doesn't live close to the clinic) and check him over properly.

Not sure whats going happen next, but we feel more confident now having had them checked sooner than later and getting these drops finally!

Just wanted to share about this even tho its not been pleasant thing for Joey and my husband having to go out on a day thats been very dangerous conditions on the roads, we feel happy that we have acted so quickly and hopefully Joey will start healing over the next couple of days. He seems ok atm . I do think he enjoyed his long drive in the car and some alone time with his human daddy

When my housemate had his Husky, she suffered from dry eye and Tony Read saw her from time to time ... he is lovely :)

good memory! My little Kibahs eye healed perfectly as Andrew Turner said it would. :D I'm so glad I kept a photographic record of it cause for a while there it was looking pretty ugly.

I hope Joeys eye is improving too.

My Misty scratched her cornea as well, but we were lucky and drops fixed her eye in no time. I hope Joey is well on the mend now :)

He is a lovely and very clever man, he looked after one of my Burmese who went blind because of high blood pressure !!

It is just fantastic to know that there are people out there like Dr Tony looking after our animals :thumbsup: . Hope you little man makes an excellent recovery.

Anzac Highway is a very good clinic - they saved Mac on 23 June. I haven't met Tony Read but if the rest of the Anzac Highway staff are anything to go by I'm sure he's excellent. Hope Joey recovers quickly Jules. :)

How lovely to hear about someone who does a good job & goes the extra mile

So many complaints now about poor service, poor people skills & everyone rushing. Sometimes just people whingeing but sadly often true too.

He sounds like a nice, kind man. Hope your dog is ok.
