Please delete if not :) I recently adopted a young male greyhound and have been having some issues with lameness in his front legs. Connor is 11 1/2 months old and was never raced. I adopted him 2 months ago, and at the time his foster carer mentioned he had noticed a slight limp in his believed left front leg after playing zoomies with his foster siblings. I soon too noticed this limp after he had run around in the yard andd believed it to be his front leg. However after a few minutes he seemed ok. I took him to the vet and he was concerned as Connor definetly showed signs of pain when he manipulated his elbow. However, about 2 weeks ago, I noticed Connor limping really badly now on his right elbow and he limped for a few days. I then had full body X-rays done and my vet was concerned about the changes in his right front elbow and so sent the X-rays to the amazing orthopaedic specialist, Dr Lidbetter for diagnosis. I have spoken with my vet today and Dr Lidbetter said that he can't see and issues with elbow displaysia or OCD (thank goodness!) but wasnt 100% sure what was going on! He did however mention a possibility could be panosteitis? So I will be doing X-rays again in a month to see if there are any changes. I am a little concerned as I don't know a lot about this condition and was wondering if anyone had experienced it in greys or another breed and is so any advice would be really appreciated! I currently give Connor fish oil everyday, have anti inflammatories in case of flare ups and have him on royal canin maxi junior plus cooked mince, rice, veg and sardines! Depending on where you are, you could contact a local greyhound rescue and see where their vets are. For sighthounds you are best to find a breed experienced vet if you can. Can't think of the name off hand but I would be looking to see Matt at a vet's in Richmond/Vineyard and think about going to see Peter Schofield. Will post the clinics name once I look it up. My gp vet did the X-rays and couldn't see any abnormalities so we sent them for a specialist opinion and got a diagnosis. It resolved by itself after about 2 months! Nekhbet Posted May 11, 2014 Share Posted May 11, 2014 bland down the diet a bit. Fish oils are only useful if balanced with Vitamin E. Sprinter Gold Energy E oil is a better alternative. Put him on maxi adult or lower protein and decrease the mince/veg ratio down to 1/3 protein total. I wouldnt be cooking the mince his body is getting way too much 'processed' food which might not be helping as it's so 'digestible' if you know what I mean. Give him raw mince but cut it down and balance it out. Vets ALl Natural make a wonderful Health Booster powder you can add to a home made diet to balance it out. Nicquistar Posted May 11, 2014 Share Posted May 11, 2014 I agree with Nekhbet. A dog I bred several years ago was diagnosed with it. His owner had him too heavy & on too high a protein diet. It is easily diagnosed by x-rays as it shows as a shadow in the affected bones. To put it simply it is growing pains. A greyhound person would be your best bet. Ditto, and I've had youngsters of various ages. That's not to say it's impossible, of course, but I'd be getting another opinion anyway. Regarding diet, I wouldn't feed rice or vegetables to a greyhound and honestly, I wouldn't feed raw mince (and certainly not cooked mince) unless it was a mixed mince (containing some offal and ground bone). Also, I don't think fish oil in a young dog is necessary. If your dog has a good diet overall, supplementing in general is rarely needed and fish oil supplements may be doing more harm than good- there was a thread on here a while ago about a woman who almost lost her dog to a potential side effect of fish oil capsules, it's worth a read.
