A friend is thinking of adding a dog .... and of course I suggested she check a good rescue who does foster care & gives support ..so the puppy stage will be a non event , and she can see what she is getting :) "No.. those dogs are trained too much for me ...." Yes, her dogs have always been a bit lacking in direction.... But I had to giggle - who would not consider a dog with some training ? :)

Thank you. It was weird this morning ..no dog bed in my room ..no one rushing to clean up Mr.Wilson's left-overs ...or baying at the back door if I was a few steps slow ..... I actually felt

*imagines DD's pack in olympic lycra...* ..maybe not. Out here working dogs are fed at night .. after they have done their thing, and so they can rest and use the food while asleep ... I cannot imagine them working on full bellies , and would think perhaps it wouldn't be comfortable at all . Our dogs can run many hours in a day, and not sure how that would go on a ful belly . AFAIK wolves etc hunt, gorge & sleep , so energy is there , muscles are healed ,blood is made - ready for next time .... and I suppose stock work is the equivalent of a 'hunt' When working Guide Dogs , they were never fed before training ..always afterwards ....

(even tho I don't like the idea of dogs crated for so long) you both did well ...I wonder which of you felt worse? ;) Def. ditch the beanbag! My old Mitch ..he went into a boarding kennel with his nice new beanbag ..and the kennel owners were still finding beans for days :p

Although I don't cart it around much now ..a walking stick kind of makes things tricky ... I LOVE my monopod :) It is old , aluminium , very light , and very handy for stabilising things . Mind you , these days when I'm out & about ..I use my 2nd best friend (apart from the walking stick) my FLIPSTICK.. takes some of the weight off ..and enables a bit of stabilisation :)

Thank you all ... it's much appreciated Things are very quiet and the house feels empty without that big footed vocal presence ... he who didn't believe in walking if it could be avoided ..running was better :) And almost everything he did was accompanied by barking/baying I never did sort that one out ....but it will be much missed ..

My silly boy ..all blotches & noise What will I do now , with those fluffy toys? Who will now help me to find feral cats and lean on my knee for words and for pats? nine years is not long, for me anyway - seems a short time since watching pups play. Last night ,as usual , right there for me . pointing then flushing that cat up a tree, I thought you were ill, but you gave me your best .. Then this morning I knew that you deserved rest. 'Bye my hammy boy. I helped Hammy over the bridge this morning early . For the past day or so he just wasn't 'right' and I put it down to the normal garbage eating . Yesterday we had a good day, he played in at the river and chased bunnies ..all seemed ok .. Last night he seemed a bit uncomfortable ..but did SUCH a great job finding/pointing at and treeing a feral cat ! he was so happy :) Afterwards though couldn't settle for ages ..so I sat with him ..and eventually we went to sleep. He was very pale , and had 'that look' in his eyes ...that inward looking gaze... This morning ... he was obviously very ill ..and so so pale ..I suspect an internal bleed ..... I will miss him so much ... it will be very quiet now with no baying at every opportunity .......

Hi :) How old is your puppy ? Did you get it from a local breeder who can help you? You are correct in being careful with young joints ..and there is also vaccination status to consider :)

..I know too that moment when ,all of a sudden your dog has that 'look' that old dog 'look' I saw it a couple of days ago with Hamlet .. he is 'only' 9 ,,however somehow he ate something which blew him up to "pregnant with 10 pups" and it really affected him for 24 hrs or so .. it was a VERY full gut ... and his heart ,I'm sure was affected ..as he lost some pinkness and was really lethargic for a while .. So ..degas caps ... and some other home remedies ..keeping him cool and def. NO food helped ..but at one stage I looked at him and saw an old, old dog ......

It is hard.. all you can do is start collecting special moments as images... so you have them to look back on , make sure those oldies are still offered the opportunity to do stuff they love ..eg: going to the beach is mostly about the noise/smell .. and that you can get even if you're in a pram ! ;) WE have two in their teens here ..luckily they are still quite active .. eyesight and hearing are fading , but there are no obvious health concerns - so they are being treated as normal ..and we watch :)

That's ROOly great news :)

:) the examination of what a dog gets rid of , and how often , is an important part of attentive dog husbandry , as it reflects what's happening on the dog's inside! It tells us if the dog is maybe not digesting fat properly..has too much fibre, or not enough ... perhaps has colitis, or a tear somewhere.. has been eating rubbish, grass ( or fruit seeds/skin) , maybe has a bacterial infection , or something else . A new habit for you ! My suggestions - stop puppy milk as mentioned. Also stop treats until she eats normally again .. and remember to save them for rewards for her hard work ;) My first concern was a partial blockage or similar from the seeds she will be eating the pomegranate ones will pass thru OK ..but The locquat ones may cause trouble if the they get stuck . Can you fence off the trees ? Don't offer her any food tonight .. No treats/milk/leftovers, anything. Take her for her walk ..do her training , make sure she has plenty of water ..keep her busy indoors away from those seeds ..and see if she will eat breakfast any better tomorrow .... If not .. it may be very wise to visit her vet and get her properly checked out :) Just saw your post ... make sure she has several short walks , and some short training sessions to keep her occupied and not looking for her own fun . Unfortunately, pups make their own fun , if they feel their own toys are not helping them ..or if they have no training/socialising to tire out their brain :) (bit like toddlers left alone with a texta and a blank wall ..versus a toddler helping mum with doing laundry, or using a blackboard to copy things)
