  1. Georgias thing is to wait quietly at the door to go out only to turn around and promptly want to come back in. We used to have a little bell on the door handle for her to ring when she wanted to go out as she is a very quiet dog however we took the bast#*d down when she kept ringing it. So now she just waits with a sad look on her face.
  2. I just don't know what to say. I'm so very very sorry for your loss.
  3. I got a little frustrated once at a lady who kept allowing her dogs to approach my children in the waiting room. She just couldn't understand that my child was scared of her dog because he is allergic to them. She kept saying oh they are friendly they won't hurt him they just want to say hello and play. And my poor son was plastered to my legs trying to hide behind me so they wouldn't touch him. Fortunately the nurse who knows us well came and took us into one of the rooms to wait. As i was getting very uncomfortable with the situation. Whilst i normally arrange vet visits when i don't have to take the children sometimes in an emergency i don't have a choice and it's bad enough just having to take him to the clinic without having to deal with unknown dogs getting too friendly.
  4. When your owners can't seem to understand that you didn't want to go home and thus you refuse to get out of the car prefering instead to sulk and pretend that you are suddenly blind and deaf.
  5. True. I've heard some horrible stories about reports being ignored. It is really about what is in the reports that are made. Child protection is the same. People can and do report, but they give so little information that they do not have enough to go on. Child protection is based on reasonable belief, police warrants are based on reasonable belief. The police cannot prove you committed a crime without finger prints, DNA or the like and these cannot be taken without you being arrested first. They are simply required to have reasonable belief. Child protection cannot prove a child is being harmed without seeing the child. In order to see the child they have to have reasonable belief. Are there children who slip through absolutely, are there children who are taken who should not be, absolutely, and way too many. I can assure you there are websites of parents who seriously have done nothing more than the average parent and the kids were taken away, often at 3 am by the police, and put in some institutional setting with total strangers, kids are not placed in foster care at 3 am that is left until the following day. Don't think that traumatises a child?? Whatever one might think of dail docking it is illegal in ALL states of Australia. The RSPCA cannot just do as they like, they are required to get court orders to keep any animal in their care. They can enter to investigate, just like child protection and the police. Of course foster children can be placed in care at 3am in the morning. I'm not sure where you have received this information from.
  6. My Grandmother used to make quilts out of them as well. A great idea for a nursing home as there is limited space.
  7. I used Polaramine on George when she had a reaction to something earlier in the year. It was what i had in the fridge at the time and it worked enough that it allowed time for me to get her to the clinic as we live out of town. In saying that she had a pretty severe reaction with her whole face swelling up and her eyes became very swollen to the point where she couldn't see. I ended up giving her two doses of it at home under vet instruction and then rushing her to the clinic for an injection. I definitely prefer polaramine though if i had to choose an antihistamine.
  8. Shame on you Dyzney. That dog is clearly under the influence of performance enhancing drugs. That's a hilarious photo though. It's like she's going "not gonna make it, not gonna make it."
  9. Oh wow. Scrolling through DOL and this thread was at the top. Gave me a scare because i couldn't remember starting a thread about gardening lately. Then i looked and it was from 07. A bit though as we lost our kelpie a few years ago to a snake bite. Since i'm here i'll update some. We ended up going native with a pond for our current dog in the front yard. And a smaller pond for our fish in the back.
  10. Yes Winterpaws could end up with this. Instead of this Winterpaws i love that fence. It looks nice and sturdy and at the end of the day i always think if it's worth doing it's worth doing right the first time. Even though at the time it is expensive it is worth the peace of mind.
  11. I have never used it though lots of people do. You can paint the entire fence with it, it protects the timber and also oils it  Yes, but you have to watch the horses don't lean on it as it takes a while to soak in. My little paly shetland was covered in it after ahe scratched herself on the roundyard rails. She was so filthy and greasy. It took ages to get off as it was practically water resistant.
  12. Owey i'm so sorry to read about Bailey.
  13. Learnt the hard way about wandering dogs. These days i'm not so tolerant.
  14. You fence looks very nice indeed. But I think part of the reason people move to acreage is so they don't feel like they live in a "box". A bit too suburban feeling for my liking. :) I know what you mean but i guess it doesn't feel boxy to us because our house is on stilts. We get privacy and we can still look out over the neighbours paddocks but it helps keep the dust down in our yard as in summer it gets very dry and dusty here.
  15. Going by everyones photos i seem to be the only one with an enclosed yard.
  16. Oh i found one. This one is very old. Taken just after we finished putting in the front pond.
  17. This is a really bad photo but the only one i could find on my computer that showed even a portion of what our yard fence looks like. The posts are old railway sleepers with one top rail then the tin sheeting and two bottom rails. We have 20 acres so only our house yard has this fence. When we moved here it was some very dodgy mesh that was falling down. Was useless.
  18. How are people finding the dogs? Are they trolling through places like DOL and Facebook where people have listed their profiles?
  19. I just measured Georgias neck and her measurement was 36cm. She is a bit more petite and elegant than some dals i've met though. Hope this helps.
  20. Georgia has a small neck but stuffed if i can find the tape measure this morning and i'm not going out in the cold to check her collar. I have to go to school this morning but i can try and measure when i get home later if it's not too late for you.
