  1. The recommendation for domestic freezers seems to be minus 18 or below.
  2. My dogs love the tripe treats, but they are very expensive. I feed the mfn fish based kibble a bit. It is very palatable to my fussy crew and they look good on it. They didn't like the turkey.
  3. You can be the only dog of your breed and still get Best in Group or Best in Show, potentially beating hundreds of other entries. Don't be put off by being the only one.
  4. The PennHip web site has a comment on this surgical procedure in their FAQs section, basically they say there is not enough rigorous evidence to recommend it, as it has not been demonstrated at this time that it makes a difference to outcomes for the dog.
  5. My dogs are elegant, graceful, athletic, self assured and down right stunning. Sometimes opposites attract.
  6. Mine are not inclined to carry stuff in their mouth for very long at all, it wouldn't work for them.
  7. Somatic mutation maybe. Called a 'mosaic' sometimes.
  8. Exactly sparkycat. Goofy maybe, but never ugly!
  9. Just more Borzoi. Nothing else I really want. Although a really nice Tervueren to look after us all would be sweet.
  10. I have never fed roadkill, but I knew someone who had roadkill kangaroo make up a large portion of her Deerhounds' diet, and they did fine. She knew what she was doing in regards to handling the carcasses though. As for it being better to let them decay on the roadside, they attract scavengers that can themselves be victims of vehicles, including eagles. And adding extra nutrients to road side verges to grow more nice green pick to attract more grazing close to roads doesn't seem like a particularly good outcome. I have no problem with someone collecting the carcasses, as long as they check for pouch young.
  11. Not for 'verifying', because they are not official sources, but if I just want to look at a pedigree I go to one of the online pedigree services for my breed. They are not without errors but they do well enough for research. Many breeds have them, I can think of 4 for my breed. Or for an Australian dog I might look at the breed profiles on dogz online if I didn't want to try and access the ANKC record. Really verifying requires dna.
  12. There are 3 radiologists on the ANKC panel, Lavelle, Richardson and Makara. Contact details are on the ANKC website.
  13. Probably the only country that would be viable for would be New Zealand, because it is close and there is no quarantine between the 2 countries. For anywhere else it would be a huge and expensive exercise, much more logistically feasible to bring the semen. People did used to import bitches in whelp before ai was an option and some very keen and very rare show people do take dogs overseas for big shows and could maybe do it. But it costs around $10, 000 to bring a large breed into the country, that is flights, quarantine, vet work and import approvals, and you are talking about a two way trip so even more, plus the stress on a recently mated bitch. Like you we also drive our bitches for days at a time for matings, but for us that is within our country.

Hilarious, you have a character there.

    Borzoi

I hope you find a new house in time, a Borzoi can just get into your heart and take up residence

    Borzoi

If you haven't found it yet there is a fb group, Borzoi in Australia. It is not very active but the gumtree ad was posted there, I assume the same pups. My favourite fb group is Borzoi Rule, a world wide group that is mostly well behaved and social. Also if you are in Vic there is a breed club, I think it has a fb page too.

    Borzoi

Awwww how cute. I would suggest lots of careful socialisation, getting them out and about, and avoid any bad experiences, especially bad dog experiences. Keep it all positive or neutral and start training now with positive reinforcement so they learn to look to you for guidance. We used not to have byb and I am sad we do now, but no reason they shouldn't be fabulous. Growing up with kids is great for them too.

    Borzoi

Well I can only say how I have found them, but I am on my eighth now, having owned them for several decades and having had them as house dogs interacting and living with house cats all that time. Several have been so quiet I scarely heard them bark at all their whole lives and I think most are quiet by nature. Some have wanted to chase the cats when they first met them but they learnt to accept them and some really seemed to like them from first meeting. I am still cautious about stray cats, some have been good with all but with others their cats get different treatment to strange cats.

I have inside cats and Borzoi, always have and it has worked fine. Outside cats might well be different though. As always it depends on the individuals and how you manage them. Most Borzoi don't bark much. You get the occasional one that guard barks so watch for that but mostly it is a very quiet breed. Some sing a bit. I don't find the bitches bitchy. I run multiple bitches together without a problem.
  20. I find walking along busy streets the safest, there are fewer off lead dogs, and when we have been attacked in those locations drivers have stopped to help us.
  21. Apart from any walking in the heat issues I don't see the issue. Young dogs can be over exercised but for a sound adult gundog 3 x 1/2 hour walks at normal walking pace isn't much. If a dog is mature, fit and sound and exercise is regular, I don't think over exercising at walking pace is likely. Alongside a bike or at a run, or if exercise is irregular, or the dog is young or old or unsound, or the weather is unsuitable, then yes moderate accordingly.
  22. So far I haven't had a difficult pill taker, but a friend who has a very resistant dog swears by crushing pills , or opening capsules, into vanilla icecream.
  23. Live baiting wouldn't work for lure coursing either. No lure courser has ever suggested it would that I have seen, and I know quite a few. Don't know why people persist in alleging it would.
  24. A friend in the US feeds it to his rather large kennel because it is cheap and a decent food. He pays maybe half of what it is here and doesn't consider it super premium by any means, but pretty good. I have fed it a couple of times here but prefer Meals for Mutts
