  1. JMO but if he needs to be knocked out to have it biopsied I would opt to have the lump removed rather than have 2 GA's if it is a MCT you are better off removing it ASAP then sending it away to be tested.
  2. MERRY XMAS to you too Tony I would like to thank you for your help, its amazing how we can see so clearly what others are doing wrong yet be so blind as to whats happening right in front of us. Just to let you know peace has returned in my house no more problems since talking to you last. Wishing you all the best Sheree.
  3. Does this normally happen while your around or while they are by themselves (obiviously watching from inside)?
  4. YES cats do get ticks,be very careful your cat does not lick your dog as the advantix is highly toxic to cats I have seen first hand what it does to them not nice also wash your hands after putting advantix on your dog BEFORE touching the cat. All my pets get frontline as it does work, and I will not risk my cats being poisioned ,if you use frontline and are still seeing fleas it is an environment problem as only 5 % of fleas are adult the other 95% are larval, pupae and eggs. The frontline will kill the fleas it just the pet is getting re infested just as quick. REMEMBER advantix and frontline spot ons are fortnightly (14 days) for ticks Frontline spray is every 3 weeks (21 days)for ticks.
  5. Maybe try using frontline next time as they have different active ingredients, and you could also use permoxin with frontline or by itself aswell must be applied weekly (DO not use with advantix) I have been using frontline on all my pets for the past 9 yrs and have never had any problems and they have nver had a tick on them in that time I live in Narooma about 2 hrs south of you. I am in an extreamly bad tick area with at least one animal a day being brought into work, its because of the weather as soon as it rains and then its humid the next day out come the ticks,I will guarentee that if it is sunny tomorrow we will have more cases by tomorrow arvo.(I am a vet nurse).
  6. Permoxin spray works well THIS works well on horses and is safe for dogs also but I have not used it on my dogs.
  7. generally it is just the smell of the product, dogs noses are much better than ours I use it on all my pets and they have the same reaction but have found if i put it on while they are having their dinner they rarely notice,as food is more important. eta I have been using frontline for the past 9 yrs with no ill effects.
  8. As I have 3 dogs mine go in their crates to eat their bones or are tied up away from each other that way when they have finished I can throw away whats uneaten so I do not have this problem..........also stops them deciding to "fight" over them. Generally they will eat around 80% of a bone so there is not much left to throw out but enough for them to fight over.
  9. I would almost guarentee that it is fleas,Advantix does not have a growth inhibiter in it so it will kill adult fleas but they can still lay eggs. My advice is use frontline in conjuction with permoxin spray and also treat your house as the eggs will be hatching,it could take up to 6 mths to get rid of all the fleas.A excellent product for the house and anywhere your dogs go is KO tabs you get 2 tabs that make up 5L of spray.DO not put it on your dog. you can get it HERE Also if there are eggs in your dogs bedding it has to be washed in HOT water or better yet just hang in direct sunlight as it will kill them. Permoxin is great for flea allergy.
  10. My girl kirah has a severe reaction to "Nail Clipping" every time she sees the clippers she SCREAMS as if I were beating her to within an inch of her life, this is before I even start cutting them.........As far as treatment goes....Muzzle to muffle the screams, cut nails very quickly and only do them every couple of months unless I have her at work (I am a vet nurse) that way I won't get reported for trying to kill my dog eta - no one at work believed me at how bad she was UNTIL I took her in and they saw it for themselves. Vet diagnosis - she is nuts!!
  11. HILLS Z/D is very good for skin conditions, especially dogs with dermodex, I have seen the results first hand otherwise I would not reccommend it. ETA - Dogs with itchy skin usually have a Food allergy and intolerance can be mild to severe and may include painful problems with the skin, ears and digestive tract. These responses, also known as adverse reactions to food, are usually a response to protein in the food. If you want more info PM me.
  12. I'm sorry for your loss Run free Cricket My boy "Churchill" went to the bridge 5yrs ago(dog attack) he looked very similer to your boy.......... now I have something in my eye ;) ;)
  13. bumping this up for anyone who finds a tick on their dog today.
  14. A very informative site is TICK ALERT TYPES OF TICKS TICK INFO(merial) pg2 PROBAN MERIAL pg1 pg2 BROWN DOG TICKS
  15. There has been lots of threads reguarding ticks lately so I thought I would post all info I have on them so everyone can read it.Maybe it could get pinned later for future referance. For those who have found a tick on your dog - Remove the tick ASAP it does not matter if the head stays in it will die. check your dog all over it could have more than 1 tick. KEEP your dog in a crate or laundry away from noise and keep them quiet for at least 48hrs if they are NOT showing any signs. If your dog is....breathing differently, temp, vomiting, wobbly at all (even slightly),gurgly, coughing, change of voice take the dog to a vet IMMEDIATLEY. DO NOT feed your dog or leave water with it. your dog could choke and/or get pneumonia. REMEMBER even if your dog is on prevention it can still get ticks. If your dog swims tick collars are useless. for maximum protection use frontline(every 14 days) in conjuction with proban(every 2 days) or for cheaper use frontline(every 14 days) and permoxin(weekly) or advantix. eta I will continue to update this thread as I recieve more info.
  16. here is a pamphlet on ticks PM me your email address if you would like more info. ETA I have started a TICK INFORMATION thread.
  17. Just had the same problem with my girl, It will heal much faster if it is clipped , vigoriously(sp?) clean the area daily you need to remove as much crusty bits as possible and apply ilium neocort cream,it has been a week and my girl is around 95% healed and hers was bad eta. I originally only clipped a small area also but when I took her in to work I was advised to clip it and found it was much worse than I thought. kirah 26.11.07 today 8 days later
  18. If you were coming to us it would cost around $220 for desexing and $30 - $50 for the hernia depending on the size. This includes painkillers , a 3 day recheck and stitches out at 10 days. eta. a minor blood test is usually $45 and fluids are not used in castrates generally.
  19. I know you say it doesn't have fleas but a lot of people come into work with the same problem and say their dog does not have fleas But guess what they do. It has been a bad year for fleas so it could be that they are now hatching,Also just because you cannot see fleas does not mean the dog is not getting bitten by them.
  20. It sounds to me that he just wants his space,my girl does not lke others coming up to her while on lead also but offlead she is fine. dogs natural instinct is to either 1.Flight 2. freeze 3.fight It sounds like as he cannot run away from the situation he is resorting to letting everyone know he is not comfortable with them that close.I would not be telling him off, rather treat him when he is calm. I have to say though I personally do not like everyone I meet so I don't see why my dogs need to like everyone they meet either, and added to that if someone came up into my face and I could not get out of the situation I too would not be happy about it.
