Crufts 2018: maybe DOLers can continue to update
Dogsfevr replied to Boronia's topic in General Dog Discussion
All the dogs showed great .Given most people have never been to Crufts they have no idea how overwhelming & intimidating the main ring can be ,the massive over head screen is often the first thing the dogs see, cameras ring side clicking away, spotlights, crazy noise & a very very long day of waiting around listen to the stupid things joe public say . Exercising your dogs there is near impossible & battling the crowds to get out the right door to toilet outside if your dogs wont go in the inside pens is a whole new battle . -
What do you do when you get frustrated from dog training?
Dogsfevr replied to carnelian's topic in General Dog Discussion
The advice is correct ,stop training .The dog is reliant on you to be the brains and train and manage correctly ,if you can’t it’s time to stop and reassess but not at the expense of the dog -
Managing elderly dogs overnight - advice please!
Dogsfevr replied to westiemum's topic in General Dog Discussion
For elderly dogs teaching them it’s okay to use an indoor toilet is often easy or setting up a toilet approved area . We have sensor lights through our house for the dogs ( these lights come on if the power goes off ) but we have a doggy door with 24/7 access which the oldies use . We have had the odd 14/15 that would have an accident so we do set up a it’s alright option for night ,a carpet runner in our case was easy to teach the geriatrics to use and they do ,hose off easy peasy .We are tiled so not the end off the world -
Managing elderly dogs overnight - advice please!
Dogsfevr replied to westiemum's topic in General Dog Discussion
Our geriatrics get milk and farex as there last meal topper and they all thrive and very content overnight ,our oldest is 15 . We find the food to heavy ,our oldies may get 3/4 meals including there milk -
Problem is you wont know there is an infection until its too late . We would use antibiotics . But your choice your risk factor

Health issues are not elimated by buying from a breeder but a breeder who health tests the parents are hoping to minimize the risk . There is no guarantee . No different than humans who produce a child with health issues OCD can be owner created it can also be a breed related issue so the blame can be both ways . Bottle feeding is very common especially supplementing a large litter or assisting a bitch lacking in milk early on.Bottle feeding doesn’t mean anything sinister just part of helping a litter survive or thrive .

Spay coats are an issue but cavie coats still need work and the effort you put in is the end result. We clip most pet cavies off by request as the owners want the breed not the coat . Those that leave the coat do ask for the slippers (feet) to be trimmed off which I do t have an issue with as a pet especially in winter . Clipping off encourages the crappy/ dull undercoat to grow more which sheds even more, knots more and the coat never looks shiny or healthy . The reality is your either prepared to brush or your not .would soo er clip a cavie off than have to dematt them . You don’t have to clip the top coat off though but can certainly trim the underbelly and feathers to be more practical in a puppy length so still retaining the look

They come in 4 colours white . The teacup Mini have been bred for many years on Kangaroo island & where sold via a Pet shop in Perth for many years . We have yet to see one as there bred in parti colour, brown & other various colours. The ones in Oz have been imported from the US but not sure if they really took off, think the breeder now breeds Schnoodles as well. In Russia at the Schnauzer club shows they do reconize other other colours ,i think its liver & liver /tan

I would have alarm bells that the breeder had an issue before you got here . Personally I would never trust 2 girls that hate each other and no amount of training will help . This sounds like a management plan long term

Buy a bag of Eukanuba if it already agrees .Salmon in dry gives my dog soft stools

Any flea spot ons used ,also was the pup microchipped before you got it or after ,

After info on diabetes - just very curious
Dogsfevr replied to Kazm's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
We have boarded and groom a lot of diabetic dogs and all kept good weight except 1 Mini who also had to deal with other health issues at the same time . Her other issues made her diet insanely frustrating . I would say there feeding the tin and most don’t feed enough . Or they are so panicked over the diet and dogs illness they have gone extreme . -
Yep puppy is totally being underfed ,the breeder should have given you a diet plan although I gather like most who have these cross litters supply nothing . They should also have informed about exercising and over exercising . 5 km no matter how slow is over exercising and you have a cross with some serious growing too do . You can feed raw meat now ,pasta is a useless filler . Also depends what dry food your feeding . My large breed pups at this age get 3 quality meals until 6 months . I don’t feed chicken necks and frames but that is my choice ,like any raw meat ,quality and hygiene is a must
-
Lesson learned though ,receipts are given there and then ,both parties sign a puppy contract outlining what info has been given ie vacc card ,microchip paperwork ,puppy feeding chart ,health records of parents etc etc This outlines your refund policy etc etc .Many find the 6 weeks pet insurance great for this scenario . Yep nothing is verbal ,keep copies of all and ask vet for a written report . Personally him having other pets means nothing ,very few peop,e just own one animal so I don’t see that as an issue .

You do realise show breeders main priority is pet homes too, your litter is no more special in that sense . So when you say tested you mean ,hips/elbows and PRA .? yout post a tad confusing especially as you say you have lots of breeder friends who you could have easily asked this question too . You are a breeder by having a litter and bound by all the same pros/ cons a registered breeder is so if you breed health issues your still just as liable.

Whippets, ACDs and Murray River Retrievers
Dogsfevr replied to CaptainFur's topic in General Dog Discussion
I’m a firm believer no dog is cat proof ,you are just lucky if you get one that doesn’t care . As a side note of the various breeds we have owned the only ones we would have trusted and did around a friends cat was our Greyhounds . The Murray Rivers from what I have heard are real gundogs needing to do a job -
I guess the first question is do you have a permit or the property size for 3 dogs as I see your in WA . Female is most likely a better option ,as to marking who knows if there clean already they shouldn’t. Having said that if your slaying the bitch at an older age and she has her seasons then anything is possible plus sending the boys crazy

I would remove the toy and it’s a treat only for Leroy . Easier to just place the toy away then create a potential issue with two new dogs

Old age and how do you cope?
Dogsfevr replied to Daisys Mum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
How do I cope I embrace the fact there old and enjoy each day, month and year . Times to short to worry and miss out on a new stage of There life -

Any experienced person knows the commitment of two puppies and certainly in many breeds two at the same time often has to be handled in a different way when they hit a certain age, Personally I would never get 2 Shar peis at once but I guess that is based on the fact we have yet to board a Shar per that is friendly, not dog aggressive or numerous other issues( we have boarded a lot ) but have boarded 3 Crosses that are divine . I don’t see anyone being negative just commenting that raising 2 pups is hard work to ensure both personalities thrive and each ones pros/cons worked and managed is not easy but I’m sure the breeder covered all this and the OP has a good plan

I would find another vet .At 12 the dog will be having eye sight changes ,deafness certainly starts to creep in and the dog can no longer Rely on all senses to help. Dementia certainly happens . Remember whilst it driving you nuts it’s no joy for the dog either especially when owners get frustrated ,the dog doesn’t understand why your all annoyed at it . Just like a human with the same issues ,no fun for them and takes a special to deal with family members affected . Instead of going out and just bringing it in ,redirect the dog, give the dog confidence . My old boy started at 13 to bark early morning did it annoy yes but we New it wasn’t his fault,he wasn’t doing it deliberate,it was a legit issue for him and being annoyed would have made my beautiful old boy upset ,the changes where hard for him . His eye sight was changing and it took him time to adjust ,when he barked we got up,made him move and took him straight to bed . We also embraced his barking and learnt the tones which alerted us to any issues

Your breeder should be able to inform you of decent vets .Vets don’t specialise in a breed but some vets have greater knowledge and common sense for breeds
-
I would suggest contacting Ikons Dobes in Victoria to discuss the breed ,if it’s the right fit and he has a young son . The risk you have is this dog could be working lines which can be a whole different sort of management
-
I would be more concerned how this dog is with small children . Older dogs can be great they can also be the wrong choice if they have not be exposed to small children . If you want either of those breeds then you need to go and see the dog,ask lots of questions, take it on a trial if that scenario is available and be prepared for it being not any easier than bringing home a puppy
