  1. For boarders who come in with fly bitten ears we apply heavy zinc cream white found this to work the best in healing & stopping the flies nibbling more. For products we shop at horse or stock feeds, there is one products that everyone says works well & starts with a N i think it is , stock feeds often have stable washes that also repel flies so you can spray around the area .
  2. Generally judges just run the fingers through like most flat faced breeds ,they don't mouth them like a normal dog but i would still teach it mouthing for general care. Small steps is all that is needed ,place puppy on a table & just touch the face no mouthing ,then start running a finger through the mouth ,a few weeks time you can try lifting the folds up BUT always do it on a table at present . I always mouth my puppies in the bath tub quickly no fuss . Keep in mind pup is teething & some teeth badly & hate there mouths being touched hence the don't over do it ,just go through a routine . Stack training i always do on the table anyway because its easier on the back & easier to work with puppies than crawling around the floor plus it teaches them table manners for grooming & washing there folds in there faces . What i would suggest at present is if your mouthing technique isn't working it could be how your doing it so sometimes your better stopping & get someone to make sure your doing it right than to teach bad behaviour at this crucial age I would stop everyone trying to pat his head ,dogs will follow your hand because they have no idea what you are doing once your hand leaves there vision & then people get unsure & pull t here hand away & the dogs think its either a game or your unsure . Patting any dogs head is incorrect handling anyway .Something we have to stress often with our breed as it has eye brows & people for some reason insist on banging there head Allow puppy to see your hand & pat under the chin ,
  3. i agree medical rule out here so we would use a chiro but also the method you use may be a factor . Do you pick up under the arm pits?? Instead of picking up can you not let him follow you ?/Carrying puppy out all the time to toilet is a bad habit anyway unless there is a valid reason. Poms are hardy dogs & being a spitz breed stubborn.self willed & not always the cuddly. You have said pup thinks its a game so chances are it is but the game it thinks it is isn't ending the way it wants. Do you use treats to encourage puppy to come or do you always corner it ?? Generally just squatting down calling pup especiaally little puppies makes them feel more confifient that the giant isn't going to get them , I gather your brushing the dog so that touch time should be enjoyable remember puppy has four legs so let pup use them
  4. Why would you glue the hair roller ,when we used the rollers they where never glued and didn't gave any issues .Will say after trying many things the only option left was removing the damaged area ,healed quickly and dog was happy. You can try vet wrapping the end to buffer the hitting but it will always Redamage the tip
  5. i use Bowen massage on my dogs & highly recommend it especially on young pups & the older guys. The best people to ask for recommendations is horse people ,our person does the police horses & dressage horses & took on a small number of dogs & now does more sports dogs than horses . The main thing with massage bowen its really not a once & awhile thing . I have tried others when she was away & they where useless
  6. I have cool champions & the chamois ones & have coated breeds. I have never had issues with the chamois ones drying because i don't leave them on for ever ,there just a tool to help when required . My dogs hated there cool mats & i would be very wary of leaving dogs unattended with the cool beds with gel in them or the ones with the garden things that hold the water . Cool coats are a tool & should be used whilst supervised . At shows i will use prior to going in the ring & after leaving to just help settle .I also use the chamois towels to lay on the back or on my dogs head . Rarely do i leave them on for more than 10 mins . Should add my chamois coats live in the fridge damp all year round ,just wet them & off you go. Different coats are easier & harder to get wet depending on how quickly you want them. My cool Champions take way longer to be fully wet than the chamois
  7. Have you asked the breeder? What diet did the breeder suggest ? Some Poms when going through the coat change look like a horrid dummy brush & drop alot of coat in patches. Has he always itched or just more recently. Are you brushing the coat to help with the coat shedding process. Treats can certainly play a big role .if your pup came from a good breeder people need to remember that us good breeders don't feed many of the crappy treats people do
  8. The simple reality is world wide the answer would be different. Not all breeds can simply go out & do what there breed for nor would it be ethically supported . Other breeds are very lucky that there jobs are still very much allowed & doable . I have gundogs & in a perfect world working them would be great but the seasons are small, events often cancelled & the training is dedicated .I still expect my guys to show birdness though . The flip side is rarely will many pups from every litter go & do a job they where breed for so there next important job is to be suitable for pet owners who simply want a loving companion in there lives & be able to live with it in harmony . Australians don't allow many activities to let dogs do there jobs . Barn hunt testing would be great here but that will never happen . Lure coursing i see the good & bad . I did obedience & agility many moons ago when the courses suited all dogs but like many dog sports emphasis has turned to speed & agil ability instead of that good trusty realiable worker . I won't do agility with my current dogs as the course are not all breeds friendly No matter what the outcome is whether working or what ever if the dogs need to be rehomed via rescue as there not good enough for there job they need to take on a new role
  9. There are certainly a number of excellent breeders in WA & more than 2 so not sure what kind of research you have done . You will find numerous breeders showing most weekends .
  10. We had one of our dogs eye removed 3 weeks ago ,under $500. Recovery rate was amazingly quick & has adapted very well. This was an 11 yr old
  11. Why not get one from a WA breeder ,there are many great ones here where you can see the parents & the pups & meet the breeder .I wouldn't be paying any money until you have decided what you want & why this breeder & pup is the right fit for you. Also don't forget to add crate hire & freight to your price
  12. Paps are great little dogs and alot of gundog people have down sized to them & they do well in obedience . Pointers are great dogs as well i love my gundogs & handle Pointers but funnily i couldn't live with one because they lack the personality i like in my dogs 24/7 but i think they are a very under estimated breed calm, social & do well in dog sports .
  13. Have you considered a Greyhound ,its not a breed i often suggest ( i have owned them plus our gundogs) but this could be a good fit for what you want. A more laid back dog,not mouthy ,prefers chasy & a nice calming nature ,
  14. Creams are certainly shown as are brindles
  15. The problem comes when they start breeding double dapples ,dapple is a form of Merle hence the health issues that appear deafness etc etc.
  16. Stds are working dogs & need to do jobs ,there too intelligent for there own good .I have been around Stds & Minis for over 20 yrs & often find people who get stds are often disappointed because they seem to have expected something different (generally a Mini in a bigger version) or don't fully take on board what the breed is truly about ,they are a very versatile working breed ,herding, army dog, sniffer dogs ,great at obedience I would not call them affectionate compared to many breeds BUT they are truly the most loyal around Personally going to doggy daycare should have no factor in it . It really comes down to what your expectations where in getting this breed (presuming its the first time owning one ) . I personally think people get fixated on the word "bonded" at a puppy age & expect it all to be "wonderful" when this age is about frustrations.challenges & in some breeds creating a sound foundation for adulthood .
  17. Joining a club doesn't mean you have to interact with people . Breeds clubs in particular can only survive if they have a set number of members ,if members drop & they can't source them then clubs often fold . They survive on memberships .
  18. Personally i think with baby due in 5 months you should wait more for your first dogs sake who you truly have no idea how she will react to the changes in the household plus adding a new dog .She has a past & whilst great now i doubt she has had to deal with such major changes in one hit . I would training first dog to walk with pram now & doing as much reshaping with here before bub arrives so she can cope then after bub has settled & your new girl has settled look at bringing a new dog in I have owned Gundogs for years & they walk in straight lines ,they walk no different to any other dog that isn't lead trained .
  19. 17 dogs in co ownership/breeders terms ,relationship still going nearly 20 yrs later .
  20. Dogs don't necessarily dislike someone but may react to them being a smoker, strong perfume, health issues ,body odor . My dogs are very social but don't feel relaxed around smokers & this is evident in the show ring with many dogs that react to judges who smoke . There was a judge that wore very strong perfume & many dogs disliked her .
