  1. My male and female pug have the same mum and dad but from litters, two years apart. They have their very own different lovely personalities. Saying that it is rare to find a pug does not have a lovely personality.
  2. Give her time. Make things safe. I also found that different scents around the house really did not help my blind boy.
  3. What a joke. They have had a policy, to do with raw feeding, for the at least the last three to four years. You must have missed their thanks to their partner - the passionate pet lovers at 'insert dry food sponsor'
  4. Im sure the pounds and rescue would see the point in knocking them off, or reducing them at least. What breeds need more breeders? take a few under your wing and educate them in breeding? I would be gobsmacked if all registered breeders had this attitude. My rescue group, for one, would love to see the BYB, PF, pet shops and unethical breeders knocked off. Basically you are saying that it's not up to you to try and knock these people off. Who is it up to then? Should it be left to rescue groups to fight this battle? Well if ethical registered breeders are not going to stick up for themselves and promote pedigree dogs and educate the public on why they should buy a pedigree dog and not a BYB, PF or pet shop dog then why should rescue groups continuously try to educate the public about ethical registered breeders? Next time someone rings up and asks me about puppies, we recieve at least 4 calls a week and the same amount of emails, I wont bother telling them about the differences between an ethical registered breeder and a PF/BYB/Pet Shop or who to contact about sourcing a puppy that comes from an ethical registered breeder.
  5. That sounds very elitist. Because the general public have no clue about pedigree dogs they do not deserve to ever own one or to be educated about them? Many of the general public think that all points of supply have the same product. Ethical registered breeders should be trying to educate the public about the pros of pedigree dogs and also protect the future of thier breed by promoting them. I would think that one way to do so is would advertise along side others offering 'inferior' products to show people there is a better option.
  6. The ethical registered breeders do not have any competition from the puppy farmers, BYBer's or the pet shops. But you do as so many of the general public have no idea about ethical registered breeders. How are the general public supposed to know about ethical registered breeders if they only advertisments they see are those of PF, BYB & pet shops? So many of the general public has no clue that there are canine associations, breed clubs or even websites like DOL. If they have no clue and there are no adverts by ethical registered breeders how are they going to find one or even be educated that there is a better alternative to buying from a petshop, BYB or PF?
  7. It would really be a step in the right direction to see registered breeders and rescue organisation advertisments out numbering the BYB & PF ads that are in the TP at this point of time. Mike Arms made a fantastic point in that to compete with the PF, BYB and pet shops we have to advertise right along side them.
  8. I would agree that a more settled dog would have been a better choice but hopefully things can be worked out. Perhaps also take a look at how you react and what messages you give, either verbally or physically, to your daughter. Do you tense up? Do you start telling her not to be afraid and not to fear the dog? Do you tell her that it's ok when she starts to get afraid? Do you point out to her that you have photos of her and the dog and that she used to not be afraid? Do you change your behaviour at all? Or do you just go about things normally? When dogs are scared we are told to ignore that behaviour and to continue on with our every day life so the dog will see that there is nothing to be afraid of. If we pander to the behaviour the dog learns that it's ok to act scared and will continue with that behaviour. This is a totally different situation but just an example of how adults can influence children without even knowing it..... I have witnessed a family setting up a child for failure in relation to them wanting to see if their child would have an allergic reacted to pug hair. Firstly they told me in front of the child that their child had allergic reactions to lots of things and that pug hair would probably set her off as well. Then they told the child they were going to test if she had an allergic reaction to the pug. They basically forced the child to stand near and interact with a pug whilst asking her continuosly if she was itchie, or had a runny nose etc. Now that child might well have been just fine with pug hair but her parents had psychologically influenced her so much that there was no way that she was not going to be itchie.
  9. Sorry but I am so sick of people blaming their dogs breed for being fat when it is the owners fault they overweight. Pugs are not fat pigs! It's people that make pugs into fat pigs! We just had a pair of pugs go to their new home today. Both came in obese weighing 10.2kg and 10.4kg each. They now both weigh under 7kg. How much and what exaclty are you feeding? My guess is that your pug x should be getting about 100grams of raw food a day. My other guess is that she is probably getting double or triple that amount of food per day right now.
  10. Gee I must be mean as I have just returned from taking my 100% blind pug for 40 minute walk. He went offlead at the oval and even met another two doggies to say hello to.
  11. I would amputate if there was no other way. He would cope just fine. Kirty I am upset for you that the place where your boy came from did not pick this problem up.
  12. Is he limping all of the time or just when he gets up? Where does he sleep?
  13. Sorry to hear about your dog. I have palliatively cared for a pug that had stomach lymphoma. The owners decided against chemo and went with cortisone and pallative care. He last approx 3 to 4 months more after diagnosis. I was syringing food into him in the last few weeks but because he was still happy I kept him going. I knew when it was time to let him go. Carbs are thought to feed cancer so a grain free raw diet is the way to go. Also adding Omega oils to the diet is something that people recommend.
  14. Are the puppies male or female? How old is your girl? I had a 'what the' moment as well.
  15. I have a totally blind pug and he lives a happy life doing most things he the same way as before he went blind. We have a pug in care that is nearly totally blind that is happy as larry. We are hoping that we can give him some of his sight back with surgery and medication. We have a pug boy being adopted tomorrow that has a wonky leg (early growth plate closure of the radius). His wrist sticks out at funny angles. We were thinking of operating but as it does not cause him any problems, he can still leap up onto tables, vets have advised against it. He was on a PTS list before he came to us but is so full of life. I rehabbed another pug girl with the same condition (early growth plate closure of the radius) last year, after she had her orthopedic surgery. Her leg is so much better then it was before the surgery but it is still a little wonky. But she does not care and was described as 'A little firecracker' by her surgeon. I have known quite a few pugs over the years that have hemivertibrae which has left them with varying degrees of paralysis of the back legs. They are all happy as larry, even the boy that has no use of his back legs at all. Dogs can live a very happy life with a disability. It a matter of finding the right owner who is able and willing to put in the extra time, effort and sometimes finances to help them do so.
  16. The dogs i have come across that munch on grass are those fed dry food. Change him to a raw diet but make sure you include veggie slops.
  17. We have Frankie, the pug, in care. His demodex mange was so bad, when he first came to us, that most would have looked at him and thought that he should be PTS. He has proved them all wrong and has made an amazing recovery over the past three months. His mange treatment is 1.8mL of moxidectine orally daily and twice weekly malaseb baths. He was on antibiotics for two months to clear up his skin infections. We have him on a totally raw diet with flaxseed oil, primrose oil and green tea added. This is his story... http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?show...l=demodex+mange Hormones can be a trigger to demodex mange. Dogs that have had demodex mange should never be bred from as it is thought to be genetic.
  18. I make up approx 10L of veggie/fruit slops, at a time, and freeze it in chinese take away containers.
  19. Gorgouse Ollie came to visit. He thought he might like take home Clementine as his puggy girlfriend. Ollie could do with losing at least 2kg maybe possibly 3kg. In my opinion his breathing is that of an overweight pug who is hot and not coping with the excess weight. I do not believe he has soft pallet issues. Once the weight is off him his breathing should improve. Ollie now has a new diet. So hopefully the weight will start to come off him quickly.
  20. Blind dogs are pretty amazing. Give him a chance to get used to the new house and I am sure he will do just fine. Some mats or plastic runners might help him navigate through rooms but I think that he will pretty quickly map the house out. Make sure you make things safe for him ie. no sharp corners, no steps/landings that he can fall off and no spikey plants he can run into. I have a totally blind pug, went blind last November, and he could fool alot of people into thinking he had some vision. Yes he bumps into things some times but he is happy and navigates his way around the house and yard on his own. He even uses the doggy step to get up on the couch and usually jumps down off the couch. He still loves going for walks and really is pretty fearless.
  21. Come to 'correct weight' pug land and we will give you and honest opinon of Ollie's weight. Even vets have no idea of the correct weight of pugs because all the see is fat and obese pugs. So often people who surrender tell me that their vet said their pug only needed to lose about 1kg. That 1kg more often then not should be more like 3kg. Vets and specalists often say it is nice to see a healthy slim pug when they see mine. The Frankie that is being talked about is Pug Rescues 'demodex mange boy'. He has not got an ounce of fat on him and is lean and strong. Stunning looking boy now his hair has nearly grown back. Erny there are two different breed lines in pugs that are still evident. One is the shorter more stocky whilst the other is the taller more leggy. Even if you have a shorter more stocky pug it should not be carry excess weight. My female is short and stocky but has a lovely waist on her and weighs all of 6.3kg.
