It's a worry when you are waiting for a positive diagnosis of what is wrong with a pup, isn't it? Great news that it's not Parvo... now you can get down to making sure the pups all get the correct treatment, and they will be better in no time... T.

Have you got a 10 day schedule for the Trizine Kirty? It cleared up my foster pup nicely - results were seen by the 3rd day with his poos becoming more solid. I also fed him premium brand puppy kibble to get some weight onto him when his gut started absorbing the nutrients properly. T.

Just like we train our dogs, we have to train our vets IMHO... we need to be comfortable with the person we put our furkids' lives in the hands of, yes? My "vet test" is usually finding one that will listen to my input and take it into consideration when dealing with my pets. Not all owners are clueless about animal health and wellbeing - and a good vet will know that and adjust their consultation methods to accommodate it. Vets that don't usually get short shrift from me. In most cases I know exactly what is wrong with my dog(s), and am just needing to source the medication needed to clear it up. In other cases I have a couple of possibilities and need the vet to help confirm which is actually the case. My current local vet clinic has 2 exceptional vets (Dr Karen and Dr Julie) who do exactly the above - and I trust them with my dogs' lives implicitly. They also love it when I have rescue fosters with some of the less common ailments (barring parvo of course) that the predominately well cared for pets they usually see on a daily basis - it gives them the opportunity to expand their experience... *grin* For example, I had a foster pup that I suspected had either Guiardia or Coccidia - and needed to have a fecal float done in order to determine which. Dr Karen not only did the float, but she actually showed me the slide, and the images of both bugs, and then let me try to determine which one we had from the slide... sure enough, the pup had Coccidia. Then, because the clinic didn't have Baycox (which can be used to treat Coccidia quickly and effectively), we both pored over the MIMS book to find the best drug to treat the pup with. End result, one happy vet who got to diagnose something they don't see very often, one very chuffed foster carer who got to actively participate in said diagnosis, and one puppy seen well on his way to growing up healthy and happy. My vets also understand that some clients don't want to vaccinate their pets annually, or desex them as soon as they are big enough - they suggest it gently with each new dog, but don't constantly harp at you about it once you've told them your preference. My advice? Find a vet that will LISTEN to you and work WITH you when it comes to treating your animals - and stick with them. T.

If she has Coccidia, the vet can give you Baycox in a dose for a dog her size, or they can use Trizine... I had a pup with Coccidia once - lots of sloppy poops and not gaining weight like he should but otherwise happy and active - my vet didn't have Baycox, so we used Trizine, which worked a treat... A fecal float will distinquish between Coccidia and Guiardia - which can also have similar symptoms - and you'd use a different drug to kill Guiardia. T.

Pickles loves to "dry" my legs after a shower too! I don't appreciate it if I've already dried them... grrr! T.

Pickles is the biggest tart - always up for cuddles from anyone... *grin* She doesn't know anything different, so copes with her disability as though it really doesn't exist. Funnily enough, she can run really well. When I first started fostering her, she used to trip over her front feet a lot and do the following... She loves playing with my other foster pups... and I think that's why her coordination has improved so much... She is also a great advertisement for rescue, isn't she? T.

Mine don't lick toes, but if I have a cut or graze, one of mine has to lick it better... T.

What has she been wormed with and when? I've seen pups get quite sick - and on some occasions, die - after worming... We tend to use Fenpral or Canex on surrendered or pound sourced pups - they are much gentler than things like Drontal. I've had recently vaccinated pups also test positive for Parvo, but they didn't actually have it. I'm not sure vaccinosis would start to present this long after vaccination - although it is also a possibility. T.

Perfectly healthy apart from the funny walk... Pickles got to sniff and be sniffed by lots of lovely dogs today - and she's now having a well earned rest. T.

I too didn't want to ask one particular vet that was particularly attached to my heart dog to have to help give her her wings - but Woosie had other ideas. When it was her time, she picked the only day that the vet clinic only had a locum on with our favourite vet... and there was no way on the planet I was having a stranger give her her wings. I was a complete mess when I rang the clinic to make that appointment - incoherent in fact - but the staff member who answered the phone worked out pretty quickly who I was and what I was calling for... and handled this total blubbering mess (me) with complete compassion and empathy. A big shout out for all the staff at Mortdale Vet Clinic - they all rock! Oh crap! Guess what's playing on the radio right now... and I'm bawling like a baby... I'm a total sucker for pretty much any dog... I think I can find something to love in them all... *grin* My current three all touch me in similar yet different ways. Zeddy - 12 year old Rotti/Pittie cross - was supposed to be my then boyfriend's dog - she decided that she liked me much better... and I love her to death too. Trouble - 5.5 year old Labrador (possibly something else - maybe Dingo - in her mix) - who can't love a Labrador puppy? Even though she was the naughtiest and most destructive terror when she was younger, she managed to grab hold of my heart and won't let go... Pickles - 1 year old camp dog (born in an Aboriginal camp in the Northern Territory) - came to me as a foster pup for rescue. She is disabled - walks funny due to a brain injury. This girl is something special - she really doesn't know that she is disabled - and has the most happy and sunny personality that I just fell in love completely and adopted her myself. I have had a few other dogs share my heart and life over the years - and each of them have been totally different in the ways that they all have stolen a small piece of my soul when they had to leave me - but I wouldn't have it any other way. T.

Today is the day! Pickles can't wait to meet some new friends... *grin* T.

For each of my own animals that have had to be helped on their journey to the Bridge, my vets have sobbed with me... our animals are more than just patients to them - they have built relationships with them over the years, and it's a bit like losing a friend to them as well I think. It's one of the worst feelings in the world to leave a vet clinic with only a collar and lead - but it is made a little easier when you know for certain that it wasn't "just part of the job" for the vet staff. Empathy is a great asset Destroya - don't ever lose it, OK? It sets the special people apart... T.

I used to think crates were evil and cruel... until I had cause to use one... now I'm a total convert and have several in different sizes. My 5.5 year old Lab girl had never used a crate until she was nearly 5 - and now it's hard to get her out of hers... *grin* I use crates for my rescue foster puppies, and they get used to the idea really quickly. I have one dog who actually destroyed her crate - a steel one at that! But one failure out of literally several dozen pups fostered, plus training my older dogs to use them - not a bad strike rate over all... lol! My vote is with the Vebo crates too - the metal collapsible ones... T.

Sounds like Buckley may need to be reminded of his place in the pecking order. You may need a professional trainer to advise you of methods to get Buckley back into line. There are a few here on DOL... I'm sure one of them will be by soon to give some great advice. T.

I'm going to take Pickles for a wander around - she really enjoyed going to the PetFest in Merrylands a few weeks ago, and she's always up for stranger cuddles... *grin* Look for the strange woman with the white and brindle patched medium sized dog with a red harness that walks funny - that will be us! Pickles would love to give you cuddles... T.

I read the Sam one years ago - long before I became involved with rescue... it will never leave me... *sob* ... but now I get to help make sure that at least some dogs don't end up like the "shelter demonstration" dog in that story... *grin* T.

My very first dog as a kid was a black Lab girl.... couldn't fault her at all... the perfect family pet... My current Lab girl is yellow... and her name is Trouble... suits her to a tee... *grin* I will always have a soft spot for any big black dog though... there really isn't anything more stunning than a glossy back coat IMHO...
