Vic Police have got this up now : http://t.co/iuNpwAn Really hoping they will find them soon, please don't hesitate to ask if you need any sort of help, we are all supporting you in this difficult time

Perhaps its worth offering a reward for their return, if they were stolen? I know it's the last thing you want to give to thieves, but it may act as an incentive to give the dogs back? I hope the girls are found soon, my thoughts are with you Stolz

IN an unprecedented move, Hume residents have surrendered their dangerous dogs to the council and want them euthanased - a move that has astonished officers. Hume city infrastructure director Steve Crawley said about 12 pit bull mastiff-cross breeds had been voluntarily handed over to the council to be destroyed since the fatal attack on four-year-old Ayen Chol in St Albans on August 17. All dogs have since been euthanased, The Hume Weekly reports. "We've been approached and we're a bit surprised by that because we didn't expect that sort of reaction," Mr Crawley said. Under a proposed amendment to the Crimes Act, owners of restricted breeds or dangerous dogs could face criminal penalties and possible jail terms if their dog attacks someone. Restricted breeds include pit bulls and pit bull-cross breeds that match a visual standard guideline released by the state government last week. Mr Crawley said what had probably scared people was the fact that the government was considering making dog attacks a criminal offence. He said there had been incidents of dangerous-dog attacks in Hume. "There was an incident a couple of years ago when five dogs were mauled [by a dangerous dog] and that was a devastating case," he said. Dog owners who were unsure whether their dog fell into the "dangerous" category were urged to contact the council. Last year, there were 203 reported dog attacks in Hume. There have been about 50 reported attacks so far this year. There are 19,191 dogs registered with the council – 10 of these are among the declared dangerous breeds. Lost Dogs Home managing director Graeme Smith said that since the attack on Ayen Chol, more dogs were being surrendered. "We get one, two or three at the most pit bulls a week, which is about 1per cent [of all dogs handed in each week]," he said. Poll On Yahoo - Should Rottweilers Be Outlawed In Australia
silentchild replied to TrinaJ's topic in In The News
This poll makes my heart ache. Why would anyone even vote Yes? I look at my sweet girl's face and I just think, "how could anyone want to ban you???" -
What Is Your Favourite Time Of Day With Your Dog/s?
silentchild replied to Little Gifts's topic in General Dog Discussion
I love it when I come home from work - Emma has been trained to wait in her bed when people come in the door before she is allowed to greet, so when I come home from work she will be in her bed, lying down and I can see her shaking, literally exercising all her self-control not to run to the door to greet me, her tongue hanging out and tail wagging a million miles per second... I love it!! Then when I finally go to pat her she lets out sigh after sigh of happiness. :D She's such a good girl. -
Everyone seems to go on and on about how pit bulls were bred for fighting, but nobody ever seems to mention that pit bulls were also bred as nanny dogs... as reliable companions to children. I sincerely hope the breed won't be banned and this incident won't cause a knee-jerk reaction from the public to ban all large breed dogs. First pit bulls, next will be the Rotties, Staffies and GSDs, mark my words. This tragic incident should really highlight how much more education the Australian public needs regarding responsible dog ownership, unfortunately it seems that lately calling for bans seems to be the easy way out that most people take these days.

I'm so sorry for your loss, GayleK, and for all the rest who also lost their dogs recently. That was a very touching tribute, I shall go and give my dog an extra big hug now. My thoughts are with you during such a sad time.

Hm, we go to Monash and they quoted me about $245 for a C3 titre testing. Was the $400 they quoted you for a C5 titre? A few other vets have quoted around the same price as well, been trying to find if anywhere does it cheaper so will be interested in the replies in this thread!

I think I know which accomodation you are referring to, Dyz. I personally would love a dog-proof large enclosed yard at a holiday place, mainly because the backyard I have at home is not that big and it would be lovely to be on holiday where there is a private, secure area where my dog can sniff to her heart's content and run around without me worrying she is going to suddenly disappear into the forest if she happens to see another dog/possum/kangaroo/interesting-looking human. Unfortunately I have yet to find a dog-friendly accommodation that has a private enclosed yard, maybe I'm not looking hard enough! Although I think the most important for me is that the accommodation would need to have a secure area where I can leave my dog for a short amount of time if I need to go out without her. So in that case you spoke of above, a secure enclosed verandah would work just fine.

Scandinavian dance music group Swedish House Mafia recently released a new video for one of their singles, and it features some pretty awesome crime-fighting doggies!! I loved it and thought I'd share! Love the little Corgi! :D

My dog used to get Greenies and various other chews to keep her teeth clean but after we tried giving her deer antlers, her teeth have turned amazingly clean... I've never seen them so clean in my life! I love to just look at them, almost all her tartar is gone. Bones are also good for cleaning, also things like chicken carcass are great.

Do You Have Heating Pads For Your Dogs?
silentchild replied to Isabel964's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have a huge heated pet bed and my girl loves it. She probably doesn't need it, but she's arthritic and every morning I'd wake to find her curled up as tight as she could possibly get and she'd always try to hog the heater so I figured I'd spoil her a little... now it's hard for me to get her off the heated bed! It wasn't too expensive and was a worthy investment for her comfort, I think. -
I am just a pet owner. All my previous work / animal related experience are more pertaining to the equine industry rather than the dog one. But currently I am studying part-time canine anatomy, behaviour and & a canine body worker certification course. It's hard to fit in study when I also work full-time in an office but I just need to keep myself motivated if I keep dreaming of an animal career in the future! I also hope to get an agility dog in the near future so I could dabble in agility and obedience.

I've lost count the number of times people have exclaimed in horror when I say the magic words, "I have a Rottweiler." Apparently I have a child-killer that will soon unpredictably wake up one morning and decide to maul me. Even my mom when she visits tells me that my dog will someday turn vicious and try to eat her. All while Emma is snoring away like a tractor on her bed by the fireplace.

Cruciate Ligament Surgical Repair
silentchild replied to Caesars mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
My Rottie had TPLO and she is running & jumping around fit as a fiddle now.. The recovery was tedious but as long as you follow the vet's instructions you should be okay. We took our Rottie to hydrotherapy and swimming to help the recovery process, also massages several times a day and various muscle strengthening exercises. Good luck! -
Do you know exactly how long the dog was left in the car? If the lady had left by the time you came out to stick the note I'm assuming it was only there for a short while - shorter than you? I have to agree with PF, Souff and others on this one. Leaving a dog for long periods of time alone in a car with the windows barely open in hot temperatures is one thing - leaving a dog for a short while in cool conditions / shade is another, and the latter is perfectly fine by me, imo. Personally I would have no problems with leaving my dog in the car for longer periods of time during cool weather - especially in winter. A good way to judge is to sit by yourself in the car for about 15 minutes with the windows in the same position you would leave them for your dog - chances are if it feels fine for you, it's fine for your dog. I would also never leave my windows way too far open - for one, my dog would easily be able to lunge or bark at strangers / other dogs that get too close to the car and that could easily get us in trouble. I'm also sure that my sneaky dog would somehow be able to ninja her way out of the car if her head could fit through the window. And 2, people are idiots who will see a dog in a car and try to stick their hand in to pat them.... no way!!! An invitation to get bitten and my dog PTS as a result. To be honest if I had left my dog for 15 minutes in my car in cold weather while I quickly popped out to get some food and then come back to find some crazy lady yelling at me saying I was irresponsible.. god would you cop an earful.

So so sorry for your loss, how absolutely tragic. Best wishes to you and your family.

I have one that says 'A house is not a home without a dog.' I got it off ebay, it hangs above my dog's bed.

My Rottie has a tail and I couldn't imagine her without it.. I just love it - nothing better than a full fluffy Rottie tail wagging crazily with joy. I love the look of Rotties and Dobes with tails and uncropped ears.
