  1. When my girl was bitten by a brown snake, my vet explained the cost of treatment as she was setting everything up and getting the anti venom ready. She certainly didnt wait to get payment up front. Once I understood the cost and agreed she administered treatment straight away. I didnt pay anything until I picked my girl up from the vets. They are my regulalr vets though so that may make a difference It is just as well they didnt demand payment up front as I was in such a rush to get the dog to the vet I left my wallet at home. It would have been a 40min round trip to go and get it and my dog may have died. Note to self, grab wallet as well as dog.
  2. I live in a country town in Vic and it used to be very dog friendly. Dogs welcomed most places, lots of bush areas to go for walk, rivers and a lake. All cafes provide water for dogs and make a fuss of them :D If your dog was well behaved then it was allowed to have them off leash in most places. Poepl were very tolerant and quite dog savvy on the whole. I went to tie my girl outside the video shop one day to return a vid, but the man instisted that she come in with me and visit. In the 8 years i have lived here I have never heard of any real dog problems, no aggression, dogs behaving badly, rude owners etc. Off course we do get the usual dogs that escape and may get at some sheep or something, but no differnt to other country areas. They are usualy dispatched pretty quickly. Only problem is that the town is in Vic and therefore subject to its draconian dog laws regarding things like prong and e collars and schutzhund :D Unfortunately we now have a new local laws lady who is insisting on dragging out any law she can find and is fining dogs owners left and right for things that we have been allowed to do for years and ruining our harmonious town
  3. I think you cant go past a good GSD However you have to be aware of the above bolded bit and be prepared to put in a lot of training if you get one with decent prey drive. My GSD lives on 10 acres, we are up in the bush and have chickens, alpacas and horses. There is heaps of wildlife around here as well as sheep and cows. MY GSD has a pretty good amount of prey drive and will chase roos and chooks, probabaly sheep to given the opportunity. It has taken a LOT of training for her to be reliable around roos and sheep. She was not allowed off leash for a while when she was younger due to this and her training will be an ongoing thing to ensure she doesnt get into trouble in the future Oh and she will never be allowed near the chickens, it seems that no amount of training will over come the lure of the chooks Having said that she is the best companion now. She does everything with me around the property. Comes horse riding when I am either alone or with others, loves to go to the river for a swim and is the most loyal dog I could ask for.
  4. There was a time where I really wanted a GSD! But I see SO many in obedience (and very rarely in agility) who just seem to plod around the ring. They have no speed, and it seems, not much drive. I have only ever seen one WL GSD in the obedience ring though and she was quite lovely. A bit bigger (same with laekenois) than what I am after for the moment though. I do love the look of the sable WL GSDs My GSD doesnt know the word plod or walk for that matter (probabaly why we did so badly at obedience ) . She doesnt stop, If she is moving she is running or trotting. Sometimes it drives me a bit mad She does have some decent prey drive as well. BUT she is pretty big, bigger than the standard. Oh Mica was like that as well. She really didnt want to be patted or cuddled. I had to steal cuddles while she was asleep I found it a little upsetting at the time as I had never encountered a puppy that didnt want to be patted or loved. She will now tolerate a cuddle and even enjoy a pat, but she still isnt very snuggly. She does like to be a around you all the time though, and would follow me to her death. Maybe a WL GSD might suit you? Though they may be a bit to big. My girl weighs 32kg
  5. I was at a river at my friends house for BBQ and drinks etc. Some friends of his from Melb brought some fireworks, dont know wherer they got them? My GSD lay at my feet with me watching them go off. She fell asleep by the 4th one
  6. Wow thanks for the replies. I am glad I asked as I didnt think it would be to serious. I have never heard of a nail bed infection before. We had an echidna embedded in the back yard the day before yesterday. Before I realised it was there she has tried to dig it out. Maybe something got in then. Time to make an appointment with the vet.
  7. My girl has been licking her toe on her right paw on and off all day. On close inspection with a torch and a very patient dog, I have found a red spot right up along side her nail. It almost looks like it is inflamed where the nail grows out of the toe. There is some pus coming out from beside the nail. I cant see any cuts or grass seeds, in fact I couldnt see anything until recently. Is there anything I could put on it for the infection that wouldnt hurt if she licked it off? Obviously I will take her to the vet tomorrow if it is still looking infected or gets worse, but thought I would check if there is something I could put on it in the meantime.
  8. Mega Pet Warehouse in Ringwood has Roo tails and Roo mince. Though they have been out of roo tails for a while now My girl gets roo meat nearly every day and has never had smelly farts
  9. Thanks Staranais. I will have a look at both sites. I am going camping this weekend and have decided not to take the girl as I was worried about 1080. Im not sure if they have put it down in the area we are going into. A shame as she would love it. Now I just need something to repel snakes ETA just clicked on Persephones link, it was for K9pro as well. I thought is was a different site good price on them
  10. WOW beautiful area. Im not jealous - much.... Staranais I would love to hear how the muzzle works out for you. I am have been thinking about getting one for my GSD for the same reasons as you. We go out bush a bit, and she spends quite an amount of time with me and the horses. While we tend to avoid the 1080 areas you never know how far one may be carried. Being black she gets hugely hot in summer so I would need one with excellent ventilation, and this seems to fit the bill.
  11. So what, I don't exercise my dog enough or put time into her training as I have 'had' to use an e-collar? Oh of course the regular 10km runs with the horse mustn't be enough as she was still misbehaving! I did listen to my dog, and she was constantly screaming - mmm roos, bunnies, I must chase, chase chase! I definitely knew what the problem was and chose an appropriate tool to train her with, and yes it has taken a lot of training with the e-collar as it is a tool not unlike any other training tool. There was nothing barbaric about it, no high powered voltage used, no shut down or in-pain dog, as like you I love my dog dearly and would not have tolerated that. The end result a very happy pooch that spends hours on a property with me off leash and regularly goes for long horse rides though the bush. I am sorry to pick on your post Beagie or sound like a smart ass, but it really annoys me when people suggest that I have been cruel to my dog when they clearly have NO knowledge on how the collar works or how to use it. If you think you just slap a collar on and zap the dog into submission you are grossly misinformed. I hope the OP hasn't been put off due to the first response. He hasn't been back in here since he posted.
  12. Hi, First off yes the import ban was lifted and you can now import e-collars into Australia. I am unsure on the laws about using them in NSW. Here in Vic you have to use them under the supervision of a trainer and have to have your dog assessed by a vet first. Dogtra are a brilliant brand, though I an unfamiliar with the 7100 model. Are you familiar with using e-collars? If not I would highly recommend contacting a qualified trainer to ensure you use it correctly and get the most out your training. I would recommend Steve Courtney from K9Pro. he is in NSW and a wealth of information on e-collars and their uses. He made a world of difference to me and my dog Beagie used correctly e-collars can be a very effective training tool. Perhaps you should do some more research on their uses and training methods.
  13. OH no I am so sorry to hear this RIP big Jake Hugs to you and your family Casowner
  14. Anne, I have only just seen this thread. I am so sorry for your loss. Run free Faith
  15. Lamb neck for brekkie. Vegie slops and diced kanagroo meat for dinner. Kangaroo is the all time favourite in this house. Bring out a roo tail and the drooling starts!
  16. OMG I must be in sooky la la mode because that made me cry Those brave dogs and what a beautiful tribute.
  17. Pomi, Sorry to burst your bubble but Mt Buller is an Apline Resort (kind of like a National Park, though I cant think of the correct terminology sorry). No dogs are allowed up there. You can get a permit for one if you live there from the Resort Management Board but not for a visiting dog. The same goes for Mt Stirling (the mountain next to it)
  18. Our vet did. They also sent a letter with the card saying they understood how difficult it is to lose a loved one and went on about grievng etc. They offered to be there if we ever needed to talk (at no charge) or could recommend a good grief and loss counsellor!
  19. Oh that made me cry Did you see this one as well?
  20. Ah... . not everyone.. Yes.... not everyone As applies to all breeds! I recommend Shepherd if you are prepared to put in the hard yards in training the puppy right and being firm but calm and consistant. Also need to be prepared to exercise the dog a lot and continue training as the puppy grows, you may end up with a very high energy shepherd! They are incredibly smart and as a result need a lot of stimulation. My mum has a golden, she is VERY different as in she is more laid back, happy to just sit there wagging her tail and just wants a pat. She didn't even really get any solid training and was just a good dog. They are all different though, regardless of breed I meant Joe Blow lol, I can walk my dog and people invite themselves up for a pat and comment on how beautiful she is etc etc, the same friend I mentioned earlier can walk her Rotti pup and people cross the road to avoid her, unfortunately GSD's often fall into the second category, when they are fluffy pups its all good, but once they start go grow up and look more like GSD's then people automatically think the dog will turn on them, Im only saying this because the OP has young children and she may find that certain mums wont let their kids come to play if they have a 'vicious' dog in the yard...obviously those people arent worth knowing in the first place, but Im thinking of the effect on the kids if nobody wants to play... I know that scenario is unlikely, I think GSDs are awesome dogs and like most other people on here believe its more to do with the breeding and training rather than the breed itself I am finding these comments a little odd. So the OP shouldnt get a GSD because then her children may end up having no friends? or people will be to scared to talk to them? Maybe this isnt what your saying and I have got it all wrong but still, strange...
  21. its not the overall breed its some lines. Difference. They have a real world application and need in society. If the breeders are not selling them to Jo Bloggs then whats the issue with it? The public appreciate dogs doing jobs but they understand they are 'different' to pet ones. I still dont see how this is a confusing issue for so many people. Which goes back to my original question, do people who own and use attack dogs really shop on DOL for their next dog? Really??? And of course you can word that this way too...do people who breed and train attack dogs really offer them for sale on DOL? I guess the answer is yes on both counts. And next time I need an attack dog I will know where to shop for it! As I said I will go back under my rock of blissful ignorance. Maybe they do, or maybe not. I cant answer that question as I don't have enough knowledge. MY question however is what is wrong with them advertising on DOL if they want to? They have pure bred dogs that they wish to advertise on a pure breed dog website. These dogs are bred for a certain purpose which is quite clearly listed on the add. What is the problem with that? Are we only allowed to advertise pet dogs on this site? If people don't like the term 'aggressive' and don't want a dog with this trait them they can look elsewhere or at other listings. Simple.

    Piggy Back

As a child I taught my Goldie/Cocker X to do this. I would carry her around on my back all the time. I dont recall how I taught it though. I would get her to get up on a chair or table, then I would squat down in front of her and she would rest her front paws on my shoulders. I would then pick her up. She loved it. I would have to kneel down for her to get off. Or back up to a table or something to make it easier.
  23. Same problem here. I wish we had a tracking club or better yet a good Schutzhund club. I have NO chance of the last one though being in rural Vic.
  24. That's interesting, BD. My understanding (from reading) has been that for the heartworm larvae to develop to an infectious stage, it needs to develop inside a mosquito for 14 days while the outside temp is above 14 degrees Celsius. Apparently once the temp falls below 14 degrees, the development is aborted and has to start over. What Veterinary research has shown differently? Are you able to supply a link? This is what I believe as well. You can still live in a climate that has mosquitos, but it is the temperatures that is the key. It has to be over 14 degrees for more than 2 weeks, incuding overnight temps.
  25. I think that is total food that you give them, not just the RMB component. My GSD gets 700-800gms RMB plus about 300g of vegies, yoghurt or sardines etc a day. Two meals a week she skips vegies and has extra meat or offal. In winter I sometimes increase the amount she gets as she can drop a bit of weight as its cold up here where we live.
