Understanding Clicker Training
RubyStar replied to Tilly's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
To shape a behaviour using a clicker, you have to click and treat every little step of the process. The dog isn't going to know what behaviour you want from the start so if you don't click/treat to let them know they are making progress, they will give up. Say for example you want your dog to put it's paw or nose on some sort of target on the floor - if your dog looks at the target C/T, repeat until they understand well looking at this thing seems to be what is required... then you up the criteria bit by bit until they are actually doing the behaviour you set out to shape. The process gets your dog to think and offer behaviours as they try to work out what it is you want. I'm probably not explaining it right but I'm sure someone else will be able to explain it better! ETA: http://www.shirleychong.com/ is a great resource for clicker training and shaping behaviours. I used her method to shape the dumbell retrieve and it does work! -
Good girl Ness, pull out a UD pass for your mum this year!

Can you please express post me Daisy's SFE for this weekend? Thanks

I'm sorry to hear about Spinner They sounded like an awesome team, so I would really love to see any videos of the two of them if anybody comes across any? Poor Sue

Go Dante!! Great work Did you have any bloopers filming that?

I don't care what breed it is. If there is a loose dog in a front yard that isn't enclosed, I give it wide berth and after having one run out at me across the other side of the road to not only bark and snarl at me but BITE me, I now sadly go into a panic at the sight of any loose dog. A dog barks behind a fence and I go into a panic that they're going to get loose, it's just not right and I hope with time I get over it All because these people wanted their dog out in their front yard with them while they were working (and then nipped inside for a minute leaving their dog unattended )

Thanks, guys I won't plan my drink too early, though... she gives me lovely stuff at training but then becomes miss airhead in the ring She's lucky I just love her to bits or I may have to trade her in for a non-blonde model I am getting more and more impressed with her heelwork as each day goes on (as 6 months ago I wouldn't have gotten 5 seconds out of her without her looking away, and I would have had to show her treats up front just to get a working attitude out of her!) If only I could sort out this distraction issue I have sweet chilli grain waves chips already, they're not too hot! And I have white kitkat block of chocolate and another mint aero block. I'll see if I can swing another Smarties block - can't have too much chocolate Ness, whaddya talkin' about off topic, this is COMPLETELY on topic!!

Yeah, the secret for BOMBING OUT Actually, I do drink mine AFTER I've been in, perhaps I should try drinking one beforehand

I want to see the photo of her face when you tell Lexi that they all aren't for her!
-
Lalalalalalala I wonder who that could have been I'm not sure but there's more where that came from - I've got another 2 blocks and a bag of chips ready to go for the Classic I may as well give myself something to do! I might even just leave the dog at home and bring the food! Shopping list: buy Cruisers, and lots of them

I just go so I can sit around and eat chips and chocolate with other dog crazies

Yes thankyou for undertaking this huge task!!

I thought it would be quite obvious from the lack of yahoo's on my end that we bombed She was just way too distracted so I pulled her out of the ring literally 5 seconds after we started the heelwork. In Fairness to Rubystar, who has a very bouncy girl, it was a tough ask at novice level leaving the start post and going straight into the figure 8 where there were 2 stewards waiting to be jumped on. So guess whats on the training agenda for Monday Thanks, guys. But oh well, sh*t happens, just means I know what to include in my training That and continue distraction training BIG TIME. It's easy to get disheartened, and I am, but I have seen what great work she is capable of in a trial situation (as well of course in training), so I have no choice but to persevere and hope that one day we can pull it together once more

I love watching Beans heel - she's just amazing!!

I love how gentle my two usual destructa-labs are with their i-squeaks, it's like they know how precious they are so treat them with respect ;) They got too hot today chasing them so settled under the tree with a ball each, lightly squeezing it in their mouth for some squeaking pleasure ;)

WOOHOO Zug Zug , knew you would have placed but wasn't sure where, told you I wasn't putting up with any crap from you , HUGE congrats . Well RubyStar it's like this Pebbles has an idiot for a handler , in the sit stay the steward said "leave your dogs" & I rushed the stay cue, poor Pebbles didn't know what I wanted & went down as soon as I stepped away , ah well next time. Then to top it all of I found a lamb on the side of the road on the way home, picked him up & he was very dehydrated, we got some milk into him but unfortunately he didn't make it . Oh almost forgot, YAY ZUG ZUG your a bl...y champion ;) ;) bet you'll be still smiling in 2 weeks at the next trial . A huge congratulations to ZUG ZUG told ya there was nothing too worry about. Bad luck Dova (Bl...dy sit stays) dont know which is worse laying down in novice where you can see it or sit stays in open when you dont know what is happening. see ya next trial lol After doing my first open stay last night for Ptolomy, I have to say, out of sight are much better in my opinion - at least you can breathe! If the dog has moved, then there's not much you can do. If you're standing there watching in Novice, you hold your breath and give your dog death stares not to move Bad luck Dova Those bugger sit stays!!! I'm sure next time will be the charm!!

Agility Nationals Perth 2010
RubyStar replied to RallyValley's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I did yes but I've decided we're not ready . I can't wait to trial but I want to be confident we're ready. Banjo's had an on going foot problem for the past few weeks to. It's lucky I'm not going because I have to work that Saturday night now but I'm hoping to come watch on Friday. Don't worry, if you're not ready then you're not ready I'm entered but shouldn't be, because we really aren't ready, either -
How did Pebbles go???
