Yes, and apparently now you only purchase the grave site for 30 years! After that if you still want it you have to keep paying more.

I've got an eye specialist coming out to my mare tomorrow, I will ask him to look at her eye as well.
-
Common sense tells me the only option is to remove an eye that has a tumour in it, but I was just wondering if anyone had ever heard of the eye remaining and still being functional while the tumour could be removed? I'm dreaming aren't I? Tumour? by kirislin, on Flickr Kibahs tumour? by kirislin, on Flickr

Quite right too  I hope Kibah's mumma is spoiling herself a bit too. I'm always spoilt, I have Kibah to love me, and Penny, and Feather and Puck and Tag, I'm pretty damn lucky.

Exactly, just yesterday I was trying to reassure someone else that I know a dog who's had both her eyes removed and she is coping really well, and then suddenly, later that day I discover this on Kibah and I've changed my tune. I know it's just the shock and worry of it all though. I'd still rather have her eye taken out than the alternative. I feel Kibah still has a few good years left in her, the darling. She's been getting a bit spoilt today.

I'm confident of my vets diagnosis in this case. I dont think there's any point in seeing a specialist, but I do thank everyone for your interest, concern and suggestions. I'm watching it closely, I think I found it early and as soon as I'm certain it's growing I'll be booking her in to have her eye removed. Of course I will let you all know what is happening along the way.

It looks bad doesn't it. I can see the spot of abnormal cells, I'm sure that what it is. Frankly, as I look at these photos I feel like just ringing up Brett and making the appointment straight away. I know common sense says to just watch it for a while, but I know the outcome here. I will wait and see for a while, at least I have a record of what it looked like today so next time I take a pic I'll be able to tell if it's changed. I'm really sorry to read this Persephone.

I had an interesting little surprise this morning and this thread reminded me to be cautious. :D I left my big pineapple tin that I use as a horse food dipper on the fence post last night. This morning I picked it up to use and to my surprise there was a tiny grey/brown fur lump in the bottom of it. I shook it and it just rolled around, I realised fairly quickly it was a bat but I thought it was dead. I assumed it must have fallen in but couldn't climb or fly out again and got chilled and died. I thought I might put the macro lens on the camera and take some photos of it later. As I tipped it into another container it started to move! I left it in that container which was more shallow and put it in the horse float so it was dark and sheltered. I've just been out and it's gone! I've put some bleach in both containers I handled it in, just in case it piddled in them. I probably wouldn't have thought to do that if not for this thread, so thankyou.

I think they're all brindle, even if you cant actually see the stripes. I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong though.

thankyou all so much,it's encouraging to know that there's lots of dogs out there who've been through it and are fine. It made me realise something too, whenever I've seen photos of dogs or cats for that matter with missing eyes or limbs I realise their owners really love them. I think it always crosses my mind subconsciously. Thanks tdierikx, if I looked after myself as well as I care for them I'd live to 100.

I dont think it's in bad taste if the graves are the old historic ones although I must admit I felt "funny" when I did it a couple of years ago. Yours are very atmospheric aren't they.

sadly she isn't getting any drops because the vet doesn't think it's an injury. He did the dye test and the surface of her eye is intact. He said she wont need drops if it's just been a little bleed in her eye, so what we are hoping for is that the spot will dissapate on its own, but I feel in my heart that is not going to happen. I think I spotted it very early and now I'll be watching it closely. Any change other than it shrinking means her eye must come out. That photos was taken a couple of years ago but she is still in fantastic shape, and physically you wouldn't know she's about to turn 13, she looks like a much younger dog, so I'm hoping that is in her favour.

Here she is being her kooky little self.

I am hoping for a burst blood vessel diagnosis so Kirislin can breathe again :) It's true! She's so damn cute she gets away with all sorts of things. I can just imagine if she's going to have a little pirates patch over her missing eye she'll be even cuter and get away with even more stuff.

thanks Bianca and ari, that's encouraging.

Thankyou Kirty. Iggy Mum is coming down tomorrow, I'll get her to hold Kibies head and try to get a good shot of it. I am 99.9% sure it's a tumour, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

I know it's weird, both the right eye too. I think Kibah is really healthy otherwise. Out of curiosity I asked the receptionist when Kibah had last visted the clinic, would you believe 2001!!!! She did go to a reproduction vet in 2002 when she had her puppies, and I think perhaps Mt Evelyn for vaccination a few years ago, but that's about it. She's an amazing little girl. As I walked out there was a man I know in the waiting area with another whippet. One who did very well in the show ring and has progeny all over the world. I wont say who it is but he looked so old and frail, I suspect he might have been in there for his last journey although I didn't ask. He was younger than Kibah and yet looking at them both Kibah looks amazing. I'm hoping it will ensure she has the strength she'll need if it comes to removing her eye. Here she is enjoying a 'nana. She's been known to wake me up in the middle of the night because she can smell bananas in the fruit bowl and wants one. And I've been silly enough to give her one. IMG_2478tcs by kirislin, on Flickr

thanks everyone, it helps knowing there's people here who understand.

As I was leaving the park today with my dogs a woman saw them and started oohing and aahing over how beautiful they all were. So of course I let her come over to smooch then as they stood in the back of the car. I guess I have alot to thank that lady for, because it was when I was looking at Kibah straight on I noticed a red spot on her eye. I immediately booked her into the vet and it doesn't look good. It's not sore so I knew it wasn't an injury. Brett thinks it's a tumour, which means the eye will have to come out. I'll watch it over the next few days/weeks and if it doesn't reduce in size, or grows, the verdict is bad. Today I was just re assuring someone else that dogs can cope with blindness, but suddenly the thought of my beautiful Kibah at the age of 13 having to have such a serious operation is devastating. I know I'm in shock now, I'll get my head around it soon. Here she is, my beautiful little watermelon lips. Watermelon lips by kirislin, on Flickr

I know an elderly dog who has had both eyes removed due to glaucoma. She copes well enough at home and even wanders around the fenced property.

There might be, I'm not sure, I think Ososwift was considering starting a club, but I'm not sure where she is in relation to you. I started this club with 3 other people, perhaps you could think about doing the same. We've had other breeds come along and we never turn anyone away as long as their dogs are friendly and safe. I dont know if I'd be encouraging a retired greyhound to run though, only because they might have been retired due to injury and also you might not want to awaken the sleeping giant, that is, the urge to chase and grab, but in the end it's the owners choice, they know their dog the best. Thanks DD and yes, I've highlighted the part that I love the most too. I've always said the way I judge a good day, is if the dogs have had fun, then so have we. :D
