  1. Their prices vary alot, probably anywhere from about $1200-$3000 or maybe even more. It doesn't necessarily mean the more costly one is better, it just might have cost more to produce, (stud fees, travel, vet, cost of importing sire, etc). As to the size, most IGs I've seen, even the ones in the show ring are from about 4 kgs - 6kgs , possibly even heavier, not that I'm running around weighing them but I can get an idea from visually comparing them to my own IG, who once she's got her baby weight off is between 4.3-4.5kgs. I've seen smaller ones but you'd have to be really careful with them, even moreso than normally. There is a huge size variation with IGs much as there is with whippets. I've seen whippets that could almost pass for an IG and vice versa, although it's generally the shape of them, not the size that is the give away as to what breed they are when they're like that. I am not a breeder but I have a small litter here now, none for sale, but because they are a total outcross there's a big size and type variation with them. From a tiny one to a big one, although we still cannot be sure how they will mature and how big (or small) they will end up. There's also different types/lines of IGs. You have the European type, the English type, the US type and a mish mash of all 3. You just have to go along to a few shows, talk to breeders, look at the dogs, and decide what you like. You could also join some forums or facebook pages and get to see some that way. Good luck.
  2. the screen would be good except I go in and out umpteem times a day and it would get a bit tedious having to move it. The cardboard might work. I'll see if I need it. Marcus might be able to rig the door up with more gutter guard to be a bit stiffer and harder to push past. As of late yesterday the puppies world has been made a whole lot bigger anyway. Marcus made the gates that lead to the driveway and paddock alot safer. Well they are safe as they are in general, but tiny puppies could squeeze through the gaps that whippets and Neko couldn't. Now that they are secure we let the puppies into the front yard. They had a ball and Neko got very excited that her babies were there too and started doing crazy runs, which looked pretty funny with her boobies flapping in the breeze. I suspect today will be a big day for them as I'll let them out once it's daylight and warmed up a bit.
  3. Pretty sure the deal is if you guess the colour right you get a free puppy. :D
  4. I've made it higher but they're not getting over it, they're pushing through. The photo is before I made it higher but see on the right hand side I've sort of looped it back on itself to fill the gap between the gate and the part that attaches to the wall. Well they've figured out they can push through that bit. I'll just have to hope that soon they'll be too big to fit, although I suspect Secret/Inky will be able to fit through even when she's fully grown, she's so tiny. Puppy proof? by kirislin, on Flickr
  5. these little buggers are way too clever. I've got a baby gate across the sliding doorway that leads from the kitchen into the hallway and laundry where they are. I had to put gutter guard across the bottom of the baby gate to stop them just walking through the bars but they've figured out how to get through it and they get stuck between the sliding door and the baby gate. They scream and whimper and howl and just wont give up. Any suggestions on how to deter them from carrying on? I dont want to reward bad behaviour, but I have to release them if they're stuck so they see that as a reward.
  6. I love where they cross the river. That whippet is typical of the way I think of them. Either out flat, or flat out. Mine were the same, they'd sleep all day if I wasn't doing anything, but if I was going horse riding all day they'd be with me the whole time and if I rode 35ks they probably did at least 70 because they'd zig zag all over the place smelling exciting smells. Once we got home they'd collapse exhausted but while I was going, so were they. I love how Tuis head pops up when he hears the bike at the start of the day, and then when they get home just shoots in and goes back to bed. It's really a lovely tribute to Kelly McGarry and his love for cycling and Tui. Who will Tui run with now I wonder
  7. this video is of Kelly McGarry, a cyclist I'd never heard of before, but he recently died unexpectedly and the people close to him weren't sure what to do with this video, then they decided to release it. I'm glad they did. Have a look, it's fantastic and once you get over the heart in mouth watching how close the whippet gets to his bike, you'll realise the whippet knew just how to judge the distance and it will bring a smile to your face. Some stunning film work too, and whippets are the coolest dogs.
  8. As well as watching the other dog, it will probably also depend on the people it grows up with. The other dog might have learned to be that way from the way humans interact with it. If they do the same thing with the puppy it might learn to behave like the other dog.
  9. Ooooh I'm predicting we're on right now. Push Seven push!
  10. Yep, thought it may have been dropping last night, but up again this morning. If I happen to catch it (and it really doesn't matter if I don't cause we are ready anyway) I expect it will drop later today or tonight. *waiting, waiting, waiting*  do de do, taps fingers.
  11. Good to see you're all prepared. I was going to ask if you've got your little coloured collars ready, but seeing the photo I'm sure you have. Rotties have generally big litters dont they?
  12. Hardest of all when they die before living a full life.
  13. when she was young Her first day Pagan and Lady Cynthia by kirislin, on Flickr and in her prime, living in Qld. Look how shiny she was. I didn't rug or feed her, she was just naturally fine coated and BEAUTIFUL. Very easy horse to maintain back then. Pagan photo taken April 1993 by kirislin, on Flickr
  14. I can see this is going to be one of those threads we need to check multiple times a day just to see if she's gone into labour. Then once the puppies are born, well, there's going to be alot of traffic through here.
  15. It's a massive baby belly isn't it SG she is doing really well however, happy, restful, still eating heaps and being such a sensible girl. I have been able to watch the puppies moving for a week or more. Might have to spam with photos when they arrive :D This was our 5 week ultrasound. Great top shot of this puppy's skull. You can see cheek and muzzle. Just amazing spam away! spam away! we can never have too many puppy photos.
  16. I've been weighing the babies every day since birth, this is totally unnecessary but I've found it interesting watching how they develop. Today they are 6 weeks old and finally little Inky (Secret to us) cracked the 1 kilo barrier. I wont tell you what "Obvious" also known as Mr Fat is, suffice to say I think he will end up oversize. but he's adorable and cuddly and it wouldn't surprise me one bit to find he ends up looking absolutely beautiful with lovely movement and conformation, but just big. Mystery is probably about average weight and she already has the most perfect rose ears. Photos are in order, I'll try to get some tomorrow, I've been a bit flat today, for those of you who dont know, my beautiful mare Pagan had to be put down yesterday. I bred her and I've had her for more than half my life, she was almost 32 years old. These little puppies remind me though that life goes on. I've cried and laughed today.
  17. thankyou all for understanding. It seems so empty without her. Twice a day she'd come up and if I didn't have her dinner ready she'd let me know in no uncertain terms that it was just not good enough. I will miss her voice, I will miss her smell. People probably think a horse smells like a horse, but they still have their own smell and I could tell the difference between Pagan and Rowdy. Last year a friends old mare died and she was just a bit younger than Pagan. I went out and cuddled my girl and buried my face in her mane and just breathed her in, and told myself, remember this smell remember this smell. Now she's gone. I still have her scent on me and I dont want to wash it off.
  18. thanks all, it hasn't really sunk in yet. She's not even buried. I've covered her with a tarp, I hope the foxes dont come over night and chew on her ears, they'll probably die if they do cause she's full of lethabarb. She'll be buried tomorrow and I'll plant an oak on her grave.
  19. Your beautiful face. I'll never see it again in this life. My darling girl. Pagan: Australian Stock Horse LJ's Pagan, out of Lady Cynthia (thoroughbred) by Koorana Silver Chief (Australian Pony) Surely one of the last grand daughters of the great stallion Llowlynn Silver Chief. My treasured companion for almost 32 years. So many adventures we had together, the happiest times of my life, thankyou my darling. I will miss you. 20. Whenever I see him/is name, I think of Puck in "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Yep, that's why I called him Puck. I love his name.
  21. thanks for that. Inky is cute but the first thing I think of that rhymes with it is of course Stinky! Strangely I didn't have the same problem when I named Puck although alot of people are surprised when I tell them his name.
  22. My whippet Penny was attacked by a dog running loose with it's lead dragging on the ground and a little boy running after it. When the mother and child finally caught up she tried to blame me for having Penny on a a lead! I've still got the vets bill on the fridge, if I ever see that cow of a woman I'll present it to her. And how many times have you heard the suprised owner of the dog who's just attacked go "oooooh he's never done that before!"
  23. I dont have photos of any of the other puppies with any of the other whippets. I have to watch Feather, she seems to lack the doggy communication skills needed to tell them to go away, and when she eventually bites she will bite hard, so I have to keep them away from her. Tag is lovely with them, but he just doesn't seem to be around as much as Puck, and it's always Secret Inky who is snuggling up with him.
