  1. Not only the response from the rescue director but there is a comment on the facebook post about how the family is doing it for personal gain and setting people against rescue at christmas time too. They also went with the whole "Dogs bite" as an excuse. I really hope some investigation into rescue comes about soon. --Lhok
  2. Animals Aus and Oscar's law fb feeds are angry. They intend to try and pressure the gov to not back down. This isn't going anywhere. --Lhok
  3. Great info! Thank you very much for that. So, basically the breeder will be the person to get most of the info from as they will know best? If that is the case, there is a breeder I am hoping to be able to make the purchase from. Are we allowed to ask for reviews on here for certain breeders? So far I have been impressed with the e-mail replies the breeder has given me, but community input can't hurt. Thanks. Sent a PM --Lhok
  4. Hi there What are the top 3 generally accepted brands of dog food? Doesn't really matter what the generally accepted brands of dog food are, it's what your dog does best on. What is the best brand of dog food specifically for an Akita? Akitas can have skin and food allergies. Many in the Akita world tend to stick to a few brands. My guys were fed Earthborn Holistic grain free and did well on it. Other breeders use Proplan, Advance, Blackhawk etc. Best to ask what your breeder has been using for raising the pups and stick with that. Also many people in the Akita world tend to stick to grain free foods. Do I need to alternate between wed and dry food and if so how often? This is personal preference. I use to feed my guys wet food in the morning and their dry food of a night. Do I need to alternate between different types of food (chicken, beef, etc) and if so how often? You certainly can alternate between different types of food, just be mindful that Akitas have been known to be allergic to certain foods. Are there any home-made food recipe's that you can recommend? I gave my guys fruit and vegies as treats but apart from that I don't have much experience with it. Are there any other questions I should have asked specifically regarding an Akita diet? I'd be asking for a detailed sheet on feeding from the breeder when you pick up your pup. As to the whole training thing, Akitas are wonderfully stubborn and independent creatures with a what's in it for me attitude. They are nothing like a working dog when it comes to training. Everything is on their time and they have a great sense of humour :D --Lhok
  5. Sars are plenty affectionate with their people. Other people not so much but as they are a flock guardian and that is perfect for the job they were bred to do. --Lhok
  6. That's interesting, there were numerous comments about how the legislation as proposed is a nightmare to deal with and that they mentioned they want to avoid another dangerous dogs legislation which proved to be unworkable and costly. From where I was reading it seems to me that the chair and one other person seem to be asking the right questions in terms of how it will be funded, how many people will be needed to enforce, why can't isn't the current legislation working and how will this new one be any different seeing how the current one isn't good enough. Even the bit I quoted where they were talking to the minister seemed to be pointing to the fact that they don't like the legislation as it stands. Am I missing something here? --Lhok
  7. Depends on the owner and on the Akita. Some are low energy some are more, some owners are good with all the traits that Akitas have and some aren't. I agree with Minxy in that there will be some very loud barking at times and that would be off putting for neighbours. Not only that but there will be inspections of the property too and while Akitas in general are good with people that their owners have said can come on the grounds they are protective and they like to think for themselves so I wouldn't be too keen to put the dog in that situation routinely. I would be saying no as well, they very well could be good dog owners but the other factor is that your gut is saying no and that is probably the biggest deciding factor in my opinion. --Lhok
  8. ... but we don't have to take any of it into consideration because the animal welfare activists will be off our backs, and they are louder and nastier than those who just want to get on with doing the right thing... T. I read that a bit differently as in they have listened to other people (that contradict what Ms Pulford and co are saying) as that was the whole point of the inquiry. Which is why Ms Pulford was getting snarky about it because she might not get her absolute approval with the committee. --Lhok
  9. Anyone else reading the link Steve put up and go when they read this bit? Seems like the chair is a reasonable sort willing to be open minded but seriously when you have a minister who just openly accuses them of being bias and then the bolded bit I really hope level heads prevail. The CHAIR — I suggest to you that this bill really is more about ideology than about achieving animal welfare outcomes. We have heard from group after group after group, from expert after expert, that the perverse outcome of this bill is going to be that animal welfare is actually going to go downhill in the state of Victoria rather than being enhanced. Where is the evidence that this bill is going to enhance animal welfare in Victoria at all? Ms PULFORD — As the Chair of the committee, it sounds a bit like you have already made up your mind. The CHAIR — I am always open-minded, Minister — always. Ms PULFORD— Well, it sounds a little bit like you have already made up your mind. Mr ONDARCHIE— Sounds like you have already made up your mind too, Minister. Ms PULFORD — I would question your capacity to properly consider the evidence that we have just presented. Mr ONDARCHIE — We have listened to other people — that is the point. --Lhok
  10. is it just me who thinks they held the inquiry to show they are prepared to listen to concerns. but that it was all just a public relations scam? to appease the masses so they hope wont get a backlash like baird did? Wouldn't it be worse for them if they held public consultation and didn't listen then especially if it all goes pear shaped. --Lhok
  11. Oh absolutely. Which is why we are recommending that anyone who is affected to keep making a noise. It has been left to a relatively small number because people don't understand the outcomes. Then unfortunately I think it will be a done deal due to the trumpeting of the minister about the new legislation. I hope I am wrong. --Lhok
  12. Oh wow I didn't know that the minister could over rule the findings and go ahead with the legislation anyway. that is scary. --Lhok
  13. I think the jaw dropping thing that I read is that they agree that the the legislation as it stands with the DAB which they are pushing everyone to get will cease to be valid once the number of allowable dogs drops to ten. They then go on to say they will need the legislation to reflect what they want which is what I thought this legislation is suppose to be. There is also the mention that the things that dog breeders have been upset about will be amended in the rework of the legislation but again there is no time frames or costings just a sit and wait which isn't good enough. I'm shaking my head at how that this stuff got so far its scary. --Lhok
  14. The comments by Animals Australia and by proxy Oscar's law believe they were sufficiently consulted though. Having read through the transcripts and comments on Oscar's law fb page I find it hard to work out which is right. On the transcripts they (ol) are saying they weren't consulted officially and on the fb page they are saying they were in someway part of the consultation process. They also have no costings or information regarding how many people will be needed to enforce the new legislation and they also have no idea about how many people it will affect, but they still want to push it through. What a mess. --Lhok
  15. Yep 100% agree and completely exposes the real agenda of OL. And Animal Australia. --Lhok
  16. Well this is a timely news piece when dogs Vic people are trying to fight the upcoming law change. --Lhok
  17. what happens to the dogs in the people's care if they aren't approved? Will the councils force them to be desexed? --Lhok
  18. Yup that is right, they won't stop. They most certainly won't stop with the close of the greyhound industry either. If you are right and the industry goes in 3-4 years, next it will be horse racing then maybe pets as they have already been clear that they want to stop all animal exploitation. --Lhok
  19. I've always wanted a Giant Schnauzer in salt and pepper called Watson  --Lhok
  20. The council that this is in, is pretty laid back as far as dog control is concerned (I live in the next shire over to it). I was wondering why the ranger would just take a photo and then send a bill rather then getting the dog, maybe the sign is the clue to that. --Lhok
  21. The guy is up and walking, whether he is ok I wouldn't know. All those bite marks and wounds it is quite shocking and to see him be so calm about the whole ordeal is amazing. I am also wondering about where the sensationalism is. --Lhok
  22. So does that mean someone in Vic can import Tosas? --Lhok
  23. More to the point how many false leads would it have caused if they had of said two medium sized chunky brindle dogs. I hope the girl and her brother recover well. I have no sympathy for the owner of the dogs at all, this situation was completely avoidable. --Lhok
  24. I can only speak about the people I know who are BYB but the rules wouldn't affect them either due to the fact that most of them only have 1-2 dogs so a vast amount of them would continue to churn out the pups every time the bitch comes into season like they do now. --Lhok
  25. When I had my Akitas I would get husky or german shepherd x husky a lot, malamute, we once got bear and another who thought they were a Samoyed. --Lhok
