  1. What an arsehole. Maybe she shouldn't speak for other parents just because she's a piece of shit.
  2. Lili does this too. She will run around sniffing various balls and toys but only one will do. This can change on a daily basis but she does have two or three favourites. If I throw something that isn't her choice on that day she will just ignore it and drop whatever she wants me to throw. If the chosen ball/toy goes over the fence, well let's just say its an issue
  3. Saying the OP is dodgy and a troll is hardly helpful Just saying what a lot of people are thinking. And your posts are helpful how? I suppose you get to feel all self righteous which must be nice for you.

  5. I wouldn't blame the OP for not coming back. Some of you in here really need to chill the heck out.
  6. In my experience they can act a bit off for a few weeks after losing another dog. I would probably just act normally around her and give it some time. Poor thing If it was an ongoing thing it would require a vet check if they haven't already had one aswell.
  7. You're correct indigirl. They do work with some rescue groups.
  8. Gruflife no need for a flame suit. You're right, we need to look at why we need shelters in the first place along with how they're run. No comment re LDH at this stage.
  9. I think your conclusion is correct, but not for the reasons you think. In a culture where dogs live in small apartments, are taken everywhere including cafes etc, and often carried on public transport. By necessity people have to buy small, heavily domesticated dogs who have been bred for placid temperaments. Because Australia has a heavily rural modern history, even our urban dwellings have traditionally had huge back yards, and we tend tend toward s an "outdoor" lifestyle, we have tended towards different breeds. (Often working breeds not far removed from their working ancestry.) Not only do people not worry about lack of "social niceties" in their dogs but a tendency towards guarding property or people is often seen as a good thing. I was in Europe late last year and I can assure you that just because the people have smaller houses does not mean they buy and own smaller, more heavily domesticated dogs. In fact I saw more primitive type dogs there than I ever have and they live in apartments, go on public transport, etc The difference here? Their dogs are trained and expected to behave. People take responsibility for the actions of their animals but they also seem to be aware that a dog is still a dog and will behave as such. I didn't see one child rush up to a dog while I was there, or anyone else trying to pat another persons dog without permission. Nor did I see one off lead dog the entire time. Quiet frankly, it was refreshing. Agree. Same experience here all over Europe. They usually don't desex either but hey look no accidental matings! My Finnish friend has Samoyeds in her tiny bed sit. They are very well behaved. When they go out it's into the forest for hikes, into town for a coffee...they take them everywhere, always under control. The dogs are trained to perfection.
  10. That's so "tailsist". I'm not sure I would call it love, but what ever it is, it's wonderful. Nova has things he does for/with me that he doesn't do with other people. He is friendly with everyone, but if there are multiple people in the house (and he's already said his hellos and calmed down), he will place himself next to me. He doesn't really listen to other people if they give him commands, but I'm not sure if that's his affection for me or just that I'm the one who trains/feeds him. When I had housemates they informed me that when I leave the house he will every now and then look out the front door or window, will sleep next to the door. Even though he grew up with my housemate too, he never displayed any "missing" behaviours when she would go away, there has been zero behaviour differences in him since she moved out too. Tailsist  I'm not a tailsist, but dogs with little bobtails just can't express their love in bruises the same way tailed dogs can. Just sayin. I can't say I miss the bruises I do miss the thumping of a tail on the carpet though. Is that doggy love or just being a labrador? Tail starts thumping if I even glanced in his general direction Yeah! I love the thumping tail on the carpet! That is definitely love because Digby used to do it too! You just look at them and thump, thump, thump :) Mosley does this :) Lili has a bob tail but her wiggle bum makes up for a tail
  11. Don't worry, I'm a vet with two purebred cats (as well as two rescues) and a purebred dog - you should hear the flak I cop sometimes  Jokes aside, there's more than enough scientific (health-related) evidence to seriously question the practice of routine desexing, especially in large breed dogs. Of course I'm against backyard breeding and accidental pregnancies, however I'm also against mindless desexing. I think every case needs careful consideration of the possible benefits and risks. So nice to hear this coming from a vet!
  12. Nawww hazy :) Lili loves her face kissed too and the OH has taught her "kisses", if you say it she runs over and plants one right on your face
  13. That's lovely DD :) I often dream of my dogs, usually good dreams thankfully but I've had some bad ones too which were horrid
  14. I felt a close bond with both our dogs even as pups. I love them more than anything, my husband even says more than him  I don't exactly deny it I think they love me (and as said love is a human thing) but in their way, because of the way they look at me, follow me around, enjoy being cuddled and seek out my attention, play with me and expect me to be around for them. Like perse said, sometimes you just know although being able to put it into words.
  15. This. No apology?? I'd be knocking their bloody door down.
  16. Even PETA aren't as stupid as Palin...
