I'd prefer an entire dog to a desexed one who has to take medication for spey incontinence. There's also no extra expense involved in keeping an entire dog?

Car Question For New Big Dog (Don't Laugh)
Dame Aussie replied to MAZNAT's topic in General Dog Discussion
My 50kg Anatolian and 21kg Aussie fit fine in our Kia Rio hatch! -
Border collies are actually very intelligent, as are most breeds IMO. This is stupid and I don't understand why some feel the need to put some breeds down in order to defend their own. Weird.
-
"That's sperm" that's classic! I don't think we've ever had any silly trips but I probably would have taken my dog in with that problem too!
-
My two sleep on their beds with no blankets and no heating and they're fine!
-
That doesn't surprise me at all. I've witnessed similar.
-
Cosmolo is right. Often its awful/abusive members of the public and colleague's/managers/lack of support which are the issue more so than the animals.
-
If it were me I'd look at it in the morning and go from there. If it's still not right I'd go to the vet, you don't want to take a chance with eyes. There could be a scratch or something you can't see.
-
This is a big problem and one that not many animal welfare organisations address leading to the turnover of good staff
-
Oh the poor muffin . Glad they've found a reason for the anxiety :)
-
Thanks for that info espinay, its interesting. As the owner of an LGD, they bark as a part of their job, all of them . Sure it can be annoying but they were bred that way for a reason.

Rescue/pound Support Options?
Dame Aussie replied to yvonneh's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Most pounds and rescues are constantly full and overwhelmed so it's doubtful there would be services like respite available. Some rescues provide more support than others. I think it would be better to wait until you are more confident in Sprockets behaviour, as if you adopt from a pound, you're pretty much on your own and trainers aren't cheap. -
I hope they also mentioned the increased risk of spey incontinence but I doubt it. They never do. It's all good! No possible drawbacks! Grrr
-
I wasn't condoning indiscriminate breeding, didn't see anybody do that so not sure why you're "stunned". Just questioning whether they actually believe that simply not desexing = neglect.
-
In the ACT dogs over six months have to be desexed unless the owner has a permit to breed. Yes but I disagree that not desexing a dog is neglecting it.
-
I don't really agree that not desexing is neglect in itself. I wonder if they consider it so?
-
Yes my girl may aswell be attached to me

So sorry to hear this what a gorgeous boy.
-
OMG. The second photo of Stan with Feather he's like, "this is my friend!" and looks so happy about it!
-
I only know of good places in VIC , you're in NSW yeah?
-
An Aussie would need daily exercise IMO. They can also be quite highly strung and I know a few who are quite anxious. Mine was very destructive as a pup too. In this situation it wouldn't be my first choice. I'm sure as Lisa said there would be some that would fit in but you'd be taking a risk.

Hear hear! I completely agree Huski. My Newf (not a highly-regarded Obedience breed) is also expected to have a 100% recall. Yes it took patience and perseverance and some thinking-outside-the-box to help him learn that but I believe it is my responsibility to my dog to do my very best to ensure their safety and a reliable recall may one day mean the difference between life and death. Would you say there are any breeds of dogs that could never be trained to have a reliable recall? (Of course there are individual differences within breeds as well) What about the LGDs?? Mine is an LGD
-
Yeah same here. Lili's recall is very reliable but I just couldn't be sure she might not see a rabbit or something and bolt. Mosley can't be off lead at all the little bugger

Happy birthday gorgeous!!! He only looks 2!

Dame Aussie replied to persephone's topic in General Dog Discussion
Same here. Two dogs inside, one entire, neither smell.
