Sounds a bit slack to me Millbrooksprings. Just like the Puli the cords should be regularly divided and cared for over the couple of years it takes to grow the full coat in. I'd much prefer to see properly separated cords cut shorter if maintenance is too hard, rather than left to form large felted mats. The cords develop as undercoat is shed into them. And if they are not divided nto narrower cords each time this happens (twice a year), and constantly as the cords are forming on youngsters, the large mats form and remain. Which is a shame really.

Rangers have a duty to many animals and people, and cannot deote their day to one impounded dog. They cannot spend unlimited time allowing that dog time to "settle" in their vehicle, while other work waits. Tranquilisers take time and are not recommended for dangerous animals. Which is why precious zoo animals that escape amongst the public are more likely to be shot than tranqued. Council are of course going to limit iformation release when threatened wth legal ation, wouldn't any of us? Lets consider the other side. If any of us found a large unknown dog in our own property, and feared for our own, our children or our pet's safety, would we expect assistance? Yes. If there were consequences to that dog being removed or contained, sad yes. Too bad, yes. None of us here would criticise a farmer for shooting dead a wandering dog that was near stock, even if not directly attacking. Yet we criticise when a dog is forcefully removed from a similar situation with people? Surely people deserve at least the same regard as sheep... One sentence sums it up: so sad, too bad. edit, sp.

Capsicum spray is recommended for use on animals. It is generally regarded as less lethal than a bullet, which would also be an option for a menacing dog at large. Reactions can occur. There are a great many risks to the health of any animal out and about.

Not surprising

Komondorok (plural is with a k not as s, same as Pulik) should not smell when being shown. Owners in the USA and Eurpoe put considable work into show coats and they are spectacular, cared for much as a Puli or the corded Poodle. Their cords should be split and maintained in smaller sections and not left in large felted mats. It does involve dedication and work. Showdog I'm sorry you had a bad experience. They are intense as a guardian breed yes, but no more so than a Cenrtal Asian or Sarplaniac. They just require a suitable environment and suitable owners. They are not an urban dog, no. But they do have successful pet, agility and show careers. They are also involved in law enforcement work occasioanlly. Exceptionally devoted family dogs.

I never thought about infections either until a vet friend of mine started on a rant about them. After the first two words out of her mouth, ringworm and mange, I abruptly decided they weren't for me. She had many, many more on her list though, including parvo... Dog is messy with diarrorea, it's not going in the tub at home... Unless they were getting Virkon soaks for their disinfecting cycle I wouldn't be using them.

Pulis come in lighter colours sometimes, the one at school would not be a Komondor. We looked into them years ago, and the SA breeders were the only ones in Australia with them. They had imported a few but had lttle breeding success before retiring their stock. As far as I know the are no entire Komondorok left in Australia. We did hope to import some but never found the funds, and have since moved to a smaller property where they would be less suited. Definitely not a dog for the fainthearted or inexperienced. They have been used wth much success in the USA as stock guardians as large predators don't faze them.

If you do come by Erskine Park this Saturday keep an eye out for the Borzoi horde so you can say hello to me. :D

Rspca Outraged Over Lenient Sentence For Puppy Farmer
Alyosha replied to rachiie's topic in In The News
Good video. -
Since we got ours I have discovered a Eurovision nutcase has used it as her performance name so it's all over Google. Hopefully she'll disapear eventually. What I found really odd is that Alyosha is a masculine name... There's no accounting for Eurovision taste I suppose!

Maybe raspberry leaf?

I'm not sure about phantoms, but an old treatment to minimise estrus symptoms and problems was to give chlorophyll. Might be worth researching? edit to add - maybe it only helps as an odour masker...

Help With Bitch With No Heats And Weird Temp
Alyosha replied to Quazaa's topic in General Dog Discussion
15 months is young for a first season in some breeds. ;) I wouldn't write her off as infertile either, it sounds like hormones are just starting tokick in. -
We didn't get to meet you and Riot, but had a great weekend too. If you see us at shows - on the end of borzoi leads most usually - make sure you say g'day! :D

Scruffer/lurcher/stag Etc
Alyosha replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Poor bloody greys. The rough end of the stick is certainly theirs. We have even had a purebred borzoi come through rescue this year - who was a giveaway, female, and not desexed... It was so easy to imagine her in a pigdog breeders backyard... She is now desexed and in an awesome permanent home. Not to mention the others this year has brought into rescue, afghans, pharaohs, salukis... Phew! -
Scruffer/lurcher/stag Etc
Alyosha replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Gotta love the lurchers. I do hate how many are doomed to redneck lifestyles or dumped at pounds though. Just one reason why those of us that breed these big hounds are very careful where they go. I've seen borzoi crosses amongst lurcher types that end up in rescue, and the boy from West Wyalong has a very saluki look about him. If any folk in rescue ever spot purebreds of these sighthounds being given away etc on sites like Gumtree - let me know. We have a little breeder network and can normally get them into care and desexed quicksmart - which saves them a life on a chain churning out hunting pups... -
I hate the thought of mass breeders like that having another title they can flaunt to unknowing buyers. I wonder if the NSW one is (in part) in an attempt to improve breeder advertising in the magazine? The advertising rates are woefully expensive, and consequently few breeders use it. For a magazine with limited circulation, perhaps better deals on member advertising could be in order, rather than another fee paying title that means little in reality?

Gorgeous babies Trisven!! Congratulations!

Skinny Staghound Boy From West Wyalong
Alyosha replied to lovemymutts's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Great save! I didn't see him in the pound, well done on getting him out. He looks like he may have a a tad of afghan or saluki in the mix... Just gorgeous!! -
I can't say I'm overly sold on the five litters idea. Breeders who breed less frequently may take ten or more years to breed five litters, yet their practices may be exemplary.

What Is The Most Popular Colour In Your Breed?
Alyosha replied to Esky the husky's topic in General Dog Discussion
Oh... Seal Italians.... drool... But red and white is drop dead gorgeous too. :D In my breed (borzoi) all colours are allowed. Athough in the FCI blue and chocolate are disallowed (dilute isn't really present in the breed worldwide apart from rare occasions). So it comes down to personal preference really. Although I have seen some people be so taken with certain colours they will consider breeding etc just for that. White would be one, as it is very striking. But dark red seems to catch some attention as well. We also see common misconceptions such as certain colours not being allowed etc, just because they aren't seen very often. Many people presume all borzoi should be white with coloured patches, yet they can be self black, tricolour, brindle, all red, all gold etc etc. -
Another Breed Recommendation Thread
Alyosha replied to Lady Flying Furball's topic in General Dog Discussion
Because of the sheer velocity involved... :D -
WooHoo!! Well done to you and your boy. What a lovely start, especially nice when you've been part of the breeding.

Our dogs travel better in the trailer. The insulation means they stay cooler - even in the aircon if they get sun coming in a window on them they get hot. They also don't get travel sick in the trailer. In saying that, like already mentioned, our diesel wagon (Subaru Outback) has the same fuel consumption as a small hatch like a Getz - 6.4L per 100km on average. So if you buy right you can get a bigger car without a bigger bill.
