  1. I don't know, I haven't seen the dog. And even if I had I'm not qualified to make that assessment.
  2. This was the point of the thread, to get advise from people who know a lot more then me so i can give this person some advise and its up to him. But people who are judging and saying he should be pts with no professional assessment is silly. If you are going to put info out there on a public forum then you can expect people are going to give their opinion I'm not judging. I haven't seen the dog, I haven't even read the whole thread.. Above are two numbers of people in your area that CAN and WILL be able to help you/your friend. I'd suggest you pick up the phone and call them.
  3. Seriously..? A shitload of people diagnosing aggression over the Internet based on the say-so of someone who seems to have little understanding of canine behaviour..?? you've got to be kidding me OP, go tell your 'friend' to see a professional and have the dog properly assessed. If he wants to appeal a DD order than let him. What is it to you, or anyone else for that matter? If the dog is truly a menace I doubt the owner will be very successful. A professional canine behaviourist who can physically assess IN PERSON the dog is the ONLY one qualified of giving you an answer on whether the dog can be trained/managed/rehabilitated. Any 'advice' given over the net is just a waste of time. Steve Courtney is in NSW. I'm sure plenty of people here would recommend him: phone 02 4589 1195 Or try Craig Murray - Premier Dog Training: Phone 0408 113 874 It doesn't cost much to make a phone call..
  4. Are you giving him a C5 or C3? If the pup has already had 2 vaccs you don't necessarily 'have' to vaccinate again. There are also other options - titer test to see if he has immunity or Parvac only.
  5. Paddles, what size are you? I have a vest here that you can have if you like. It's a mens size small, probably a woman's 12-14 ish. Pm me if you are interested.
  6. Cesar Millan is more about dog psychology then dog training. Your pup is only 11 weeks old, I'm presuming you have only had her for 3 weeks max? Spend some time bonding with her first, teach her basic boundaries - toilet training, crate training, basic manners etc, be kind and patient. Obedience can come later and will do easily if you invest time establishing good basic foundations which will take time. Teaching eye contact is not difficult but you need to have some sort of communication system in place first, or else she wont understand what you want. Have you tried clicker training? If done properly it's very clear for the pup and she will learn quickly. This book is a great guide for establishing the basics with a young pup: The Focussed Puppy http://www.dogwise.c...s.cfm?ID=DEG966 Hope that helps ETA these links may be useful for you http://www.shirleychong.com/keepers/archives/eyes.txt http://www.shirleychong.com/keepers/start.html
  7. No, she won't be mated any time soon. Thank you for the advice. Don't necessarily 'have' to. Though it's the 16 month C3 booster, she's already a month overdue and I'd like to get it over and done with before training starts again. I probably wont vaccinate again after this one though. I'm expecting her to come into season any day now. She's booked in on Monday afternoon.
  8. Are there any issues associated with vaccinating a female that either is or is about to come into season? Thank you.
  9. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/2013/02/01/06/41/gay-dog-on-death-row-gets-speedy-adoption This healthy bulldog was due to be put down at an overcrowded animal shelter today after its owner abandoned it, allegedly because he thought the dog was gay. But this morning a new owner stepped forward to adopt the dog, after news of its fate sparked a frantic appeal among animal lovers. A woman who regularly visits the shelter, in Jackson, Tennessee, set up a Facebook page yesterday with a photo of the dog and a message claiming its owner dropped it off at the shelter because it was found "hunched" over another male dog. A post on the Facebook page reads: "Don't let this gorgeous dog die bc his owner is ignorant of normal dog behavior! He's in kennel 10L and he WILL be put down tomorrow bc there is no room at the inn!" Animal experts say a male dog mounting another male dog is not a sign of sexual orientation but rather a sign of dominance, the Daily Mail reports. Several Facebook users and at least one canine rescue group volunteered to show up at the shelter to rescue the doomed dog this morning. A worker at the shelter told The Tennessean newspaper the bulldog has since been released into the care of a new owner. "I have had about 10 million calls this morning. It has been adopted already. It is gone," the unnamed shelter employee was quoted as saying. "He's in good hands."
  10. The Quick draw pouch has been the best I've ever used. Good size and durable, don't leak and don't need to be lined - just wash it out with a bit of detergent every so often. I've owned a few different brands, included most mentioned in this thread, they all fell apart. Ernie sells them: http://www.prok9.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=44&Itemid=91 so does Leerburg: http://leerburg.com/736.htm Get a vest. Doesn't have to be an expensive 'dog training vest', anything with pockets works. Cheap fishing/hiking/photographers vests are full of pockets, cheap and easy to find.
  11. Can you post a link to your facebook page? Happy to share, hope he is found soon.
  12. http://www.zandonatrailers.com.au/ A friend had some made by this company. They are in Cranbourne.

  14. Happy birthday Mina Here's to many more.
  15. Wow, what a fantastic gimmick. Get people to pay huge amounts for something that that "provides bulk" The grain is only part of the mix. Given that the majority of commercial foods do contain grain I don't see how it's 'gimmicky'
  16. I was under the impression that the whole grains are supposed to pass through? Roughage, etc? Mine get VAN + RMBs and occasionally I will see some grain at the other end. I just presume it's normal. Perhaps a question for the VAN thread though..? ETA, or perhaps the grain is mostly undigested due to the dog having an irritated gut?
  17. That's what VAN looks like when it comes out the other end ;) Providing she's still bright and alert I wouldn't stress too much. Feed her a few small meals of boiled chicken, cooked mashed pumpkin and rice (in place of her normal food) and it should settle on its own. If you find blood or it gets worse then off to the vet.
  18. I've bought one from here http://temporarypetdoor.com.au/home.html Hasn't arrived yet so no idea if it's any good or not, but was a bit more affordable than the PIM doors.
  19. Standard puppy vacc protocol is 6-8 weeks, 12-14 weeks, 16-18 weeks, followed by a booster at 16 months. The 16-18 week vacc may be necessary if you choose to give the kennel cough component (C5) or if you live in a high risk parvo area. In reality it's optional, regardless of what the vet tells you. C3 is the core set of vaccines (parvo/distemper/adenovirus) and important in protecting your puppy from contracting preventable disease. C5 is an optional extra which also covers kennel cough. You will also need to consider whether you wish to attend obedience classes or board your dog as some will request proof a certain vacc schedule to attend - usually C5 (or above) plus annual boosters. Here is Jean Dodds vaccine protocol (ignore the rabies as it's not required in Australia) http://www.itsfortheanimals.com/DODDS-CHG-VACC-PROTOCOLS.HTM Here is the revised AVA position statement on vaccines http://www.apvma.gov.au/use_safely/vaccination.php AVA is now recommending 3 yearly boosters as opposed to annual boosters, however most vets are still pushing annual vaccinations. What you do is ultimately up to you. Personally I would follow the advice of your breeder.
  20. Is it really that hard to clip a dog? (serious question). I just bought these for my MIL, not sure what they are like as they haven't arrived yet http://www.ozgroomingworld.com.au/shop/index.php?route=product/product&path=35_56&product_id=502
  21. I would have but girl names I would be happy with are a little hard. http://www.bondmovies.com/girls.shtml You could always name them after Bond movie titles.
  22. Buy bigger crates. They go up to 54" ;-) http://www.ebay.com....te&LH_PrefLoc=1 easy enough to transport folded up in the back of a wagon with the seats down, or set up in the back of a van. They maybe long enough for a large dog but they are certainly not tall enough or wide enough for legs to stretch out. Our Danes have crates that are 120cm square, I can just see that in the waiting room  I didn't mean for the waiting room LOL, I meant for crate training at home. I have one of those pens here too - they are HUGE!
  23. Buy bigger crates. They go up to 54" ;-) http://www.ebay.com....te&LH_PrefLoc=1 easy enough to transport folded up in the back of a wagon with the seats down, or set up in the back of a van. (IMO) A properly crate trained dog should go into any crate on command though, so no real reason to be transporting your own crate to the vet if a dog needs an overnight stay anyway. For what it's worth mine stay in the car until the vet is ready to see them, then back in the car straight after the consult before I pay. I don't see any need to have them in the waiting room unless it's excessively hot or an emergency. *efs
  24. Mine are pretty fussy and both seem to like them. I was worried the Mal might chew it but she hasn't shown any desire to and seems to like the feel - stretches right out over it. My Ridgeback has kicked his up into a pile a few times (then uses it as a pillow lol) but no damage, they seem pretty tough. They are definitely effective, both dogs have slept soundly since we've had them (and we've been having 20+ degree nights). There were people ones there as well (had polka-dots on them). Looked and felt exactly the same to me as the pet ones, though the pet ones may be a tougher material?
