  1. Thank you Steve. I can now understand why breeders walk away from the registered sections of the community. I often hear about breeders that love their breed but believe that they know what is better for their dogs than a registry. They don't want to give up breeding. I believe that these are the people that get the BYB tag when they shouldn't. They still test what they need to and they still have champion lines, it's just that they were champions when people cared about what the breed was rather than what money they could make from a ribbon.
  2. Personally I definitely think there are issues and yes something has to be done sooner rather than later and if the breeds won't do anything about it then if it has to come from a legal standpoint I'd support it. What is interesting is what I've seen in some of the smaller dogs I've been looking at, there is definitely a 'trend' for some of the almost normal muzzled dogs to start towards a flatter muzzle. This is bizarre to me, to want to add problems to a breed of dog that doesn't presently have them.
  3. Which breeds are impossible to break into?
  4. If a dog is happy and healthy why is it wrong to breed once a year, they are animals after all and majority of dogs in the wild would breed whenever and wherever, yes I realise they are not in the wild, I'm just talking about limits though. I'm not a breeder so don't actually know the answer to this, hence the question.
  5. I don't know, I get kind of bored going to the loo and having a shower by myself, I miss having a dog. I really like those beds, my bathroom is big enough for a dog to have it's own comfy bed in there too
  6. I must be missing something, how are they reversible? Oh don't worry I see, found one that actually is reversible I would think majority of people wouldn't bother though.
  7. I haven't even decided on a breed and I'm still thinking about what I need, what I've already got, if I see something on special, do I buy it now or wait in case something better comes up later, I know exactly how you feel. Some people just have a carrot up their butts for some reason, the other thread isn't applicable as you don't actually have a puppy coming just yet
  8. I can't see anything different to what has already happened in the horse world, I'm really not surprised. The animals will pay the price in the long run.
  9. Microchip details do not prove ownership but can be used to help prove ownership along with other things like vet bills, feed bills. Without knowing exactly what took place at each change of person there is no way anyone could tell you who is more likely to be able to prove ownership.
  10. I never give money to anyone for any reason while shopping. It's bad enough that they don't leave you alone but the looks they give you after you've been shopping say to me that they think I'm selfish for spending my money on shopping and not giving them any. I'm already looking for somewhere else to buy pet things from so I don't have to go to Petbarn. I will not support them while they are pandering to the RSPCA.
  11. I've never understood the fill them up with a filler. They are meat eaters, the first and highest ingredient should be meat!
  12. I can see their point and when thinking about what sort of things I'd want to do with my new pup I had actually considered making up something like that. I have a fairly large crate so with a small sized dog as a pup, it would have plenty of room. The other alternative is to make another section from the compost sections at Bunning then they can get further away from their sleeping area.
  13. Unfortunately the lagotto forum on yahoo closed down but that was a great source of information, they are now on FB but of course nothing negative gets said anymore due to there being no hiding from the public. Some initial good breeders are now having trouble with some of the dogs they are producing. In newer breeds you also have the problems of very few to breed to and can get inbred problems, for a newer breed like the lagotto I'd wait at least 10 years while they get themselves sorted out and start bringing in more bloodlines (bloodlines being the major point here, not just dogs with the similar bloodlines). It never helps new owners when no one wants to say anything bad about anything in dog breeds and often new owners are swayed by the 'talkers' and end up with dogs they can't handle or don't want to handle.
  14. Lagottos at present are $2500 minimum unless you go joint owner with the breeder. They also have some temperament issues in certain lines and honestly I don't know if anyone is doing anything to stop it. Poodles I researched a few years ago and found that in the standard lines there was also some genetic issues. I came to the conclusion that the only way I would look at one is if I imported one from NZ that bred from imported lines on both sides. Other than that at present I'm still searching for what type of dog I want, whippets were on the end list but we moved so they had to come off, cairns as well although I keep reading about how a lot have a tendency to just go in the house because they 'feel like it' not because they haven't been trained, they are smart dogs.
  15. The easiest thing might be to get a ladder and a roll of wire and some u nails, roll it out attaching one end to the fence at the top and overlapping it onto the fence at the bottom. By extending it along each fence it can be attached and pulled tight.
  16. I don't really care what anyone calls their dogs, and honestly dogs are better behaved than most children these days so why not raise their status to something that is more fitting
  17. If I pretend for a minute that I don't know anything about assistant dogs in any way, I've come onto DOL to learn 'stuff' it's a great representation of the disabled/assistant dog section of society I've learnt about in the last couple of months!!! Do people, like these two or three in this thread that have spoken and been spoken about, realise how badly they make the rest of the people look, all they succeed in doing is making people doubt every single person they see with an assistant dog!
  18. Why is it so hard to get people with assistance dogs to toe the line. It's for their own good but all they seem to be interested in is suing people that won't let them get their way! They say that other medical issues don't have to prove anything but they do, they wear the ID bracelets to show people if something they are doing will affect them or they need help if they have something go wrong.
  19. Love them, warning - don't use them really up high, the top cupboards are about 18 inches off the roof, we thought it was a great place to put it, turns out not so much, there is now a dirty mark about half a foot in diameter right above where the spray comes out. I too don't see the problem with using them as they are targeted to mums with babies. They (the ones I've used) also have three settings for how often you want it to spray.
  20. Don't worry Dory I'm still confused too, I think I have to hear it said by someone else to 'get it'. No matter how it's written I'm still saying 'car-nnn' I 'did' pronounce it the same as this guy then there is this way Which one is correct? OH has just informed me that I'm wrong and it's like the town, which I pronouce as 'cans' without the 's'. Ok and just watched the Crufts video and she said it like saying 'can'.
  21. http://www.petprotector.org/ They base their solution on scalar waves and you can check the strength with an app on your mobile. What do others think?
  22. I got only to the first one, not the white dog, the actual first shot with the person and felt a gut wrenching pain through my body and tears, I can't look. I don't think I'll ever get over losing my girl.
  23. Kirty I have had to make this decision three times so far, it never gets easier. I made the wrong decision the first time, I chose to try and fight it, to pump him full of medication, I still cry when talking/writing about this, I only had three weeks from diagnoses to the time, every part of me screamed that it wasn't long enough, he was only 9, I had rescued him as a two year old from the kill row of the RSPCA, it wasn't fair that I couldn't give him a long life to die in his sleep. I knew the time was coming and booked it but it was still too late that last day I had to carry him outside, his legs weren't working well enough to go up and down stairs. I got home to meet the vet and he was standing there on the other side of the yard looking at me and then attempted to get to me, I had a heart dog, he was my soul dog, his legs just collapsed and I ran as fast as I could to get to him, to hold him, all I could do was sit there with him in my lap and cry, luckily the vet came right at that time and he went quickly. I live with the grief and regret every day that I didn't help him sooner. The other two, my old mare and my heart dog, I knew I didn't want to live with the additional feelings on top of what I already feel. My old mare had a growth on her chest and she was a little up and down in mood, she was 27, I made the decision with what I felt was the right time, she still whinnied when she saw people she still ran around, it was right. My heart dog, she had a heart murmur which was slowing everything down, she was holding liquid everywhere, I knew the time was coming, she was 16, she was still eating, drinking and was generally happy. The day came when I just knew, I rang the vet and took her down, she walked into the clinic herself. I still cry thinking about the bit of pain she was in when the first needle went in, her veins weren't the best at the end, I hate myself even for that little bit of pain I caused her. All I can say is let your head rule as your heart will never want to let go.
  24. Shared for you, I'm not near you but you never know who might be that can help.
