Do not give him access to that room. If he goes upstairs it is supervised. He is not toilet trained, so he needs to be supervised properly, and this sounds like a training issue to me. You say you tried to crate train him, but he just popped out the doggy door to go outside. If he's in the crate, then the door should be SHUT so he cannot just go outside, otherwise it defeats the purpose... You need to get your dog into a routine and be more consistent with his toilet breaks. Doesn't matter if you have to take him outside more than once in a half hour period, as long as you get the end result. With my fella at one stage we'd go outside, he'd toilet, then inside, straight back out up to 3 times before he'd finish. Even now he gets distracted and wanders off mid pee and we have to remind him to finish

And The Destructo-puppy Winner Issssss...
Bundyburger replied to SpotTheDog's topic in General Dog Discussion
Bundy has managed to scratch a hole in the very old floorboards down the back... Well we think he scratched it.. he may have used teeth It was ages ago now. -
Please, do NOT let your dog sleep on your feet in the car on a regular basis, it is very dangerous. We had our pup in the front of the car with us on our way home the first night (being a ute there wasn't much choice), and he slept on my feet. He stayed that way for a while whenever we went in the car. One night in June last year we went out but left our pup at home, and got into a severe car accident. If my pup had been at our feet as he normally was, he would be dead right now from the impact. I knew that being in the footwell wasn't safe for him but he wasn't a good ute traveller. Never again will I put a dog at my feet. Crated safely in the back if we have a ute, or harnessed in the back in a normal car, no excuses. It really isn't a lesson you want to learn the hard way. Flying is reasonably stress free... they just curl up adn go to sleep and come out bouncing at the other end. It's quicker, and will be cheaper than the tanks of petrol you chew through driving up and back.

Pet Insurance Premium Increase
Bundyburger replied to poodle proud's topic in General Dog Discussion
Err I'd hardly call increasing premiums a 'scam'. It's part of life. -
Bundy had hiccups about 6 times a week when he was little.. I used to love it.. I'm so mean.. I'd crack up laughing every time. Now he only hiccups once a month or so.. He's taken up farting instead

I'm sorry for your loss. :D I planted a Eucalyptus tree for my boy. It has grown well and is a healthy 5+ year old tree now. Somehow I find it consoling that it is his tree, I find it a peaceful place to reflect. I still have tears from time to time. We did that for our old girl too and she passed away when I was 15, I'm now 23. Whenever I go to dads I go to her tree to say hello and have a bit of a cry. We didn't bury her there but her collar is buried with the tree.

How Many Dogs Do You Own? What Types? What Matches?
Bundyburger replied to zizzi's topic in General Dog Discussion
I was thinking Viz too. Ours is actually really laid back... He has about two 'stupid' periods a day.. when we get up, and when OH comes home from work... Other than that he'll sleep on the couch but if we want to go out and be really active, then he's there ready to go! They MUST be part of the family, there's really no negotiation there... that's just how they are. I went to go out on the weekend, and I got followed to the door, and he sat there wagging his tail ready to come with me :D Our boy does have a tendancy to be 'bouncy' when excited though... all four feet leave the ground on a regular basis... Corvus, they probably aren't that bad at home... Ours is more hyper in public ;) When people see him at home they can't believe how chilled he is... his 15 yo sister has never been ms energetic, she'd prefer to sleep and cuddle than do anything else.. always has been like that. Although I probably shouldn't tell you we've nicknamed him our Mexican Jumping Bean on Speed cos when he wants to go bonkers he will. FHRP, I just get Bundy sitting at the door whining -
JJ and Carebear are both safe.

One V has her dew claws removed, the other three dogs still have theirs. One injury to the foxie 5 years ago.. and one injury for the kelpie about a year ago. My aunts dog injures her dew claws on a regular basis, but they won't consider removing them as they think it's too invasive (I don't know what it involves).

Next Door Neighbours Cat In My Backyard
Bundyburger replied to Adnil444's topic in General Dog Discussion
That's a good idea. In Victoria, I believe it is the responsibility of the owner to keep said cat from roaming and technically, the cat should not leave the owner's property. Personally, I can't see why cats should be different to dogs. If a dog is caught roaming, the owner is most likely fined, so why not cats? Another way to confine them to their own property is for the owner to nail chicken wire to the top of the fence at an angle as the cats don't like walking on it. In mums council you could only get fined if they were out after 'curfew'. However i still think it's a good idea to trap it and call the council, it might make them think a little ;) We can't do that here, the cats woud be dead before they made it to the ground... luckily they don't come near our house -
My bitch, speyed at 6 mths was incontinent by 4. It went on for two years and stopped when she was 6. I believe it's started again now, and she's turning 15.

At The Risk Of Sounding Like A Fruitcake...
Bundyburger replied to SpotTheDog's topic in General Dog Discussion
You're in Vic? Last night it was darn hot. Our Kelpie was panting all night and he was only sleeping on the floor. The viz was in his crate puffing away too. They both do this a lot when they are hot, no matter where they are sleeping. I woke up dripping in sweat a number of times overnight. We give our two an iceblock before bed when its warm, it brings their temp down, if one doesn't work they get another, if that doesn't help they get a cool towel on them -
Next Door Neighbours Cat In My Backyard
Bundyburger replied to Adnil444's topic in General Dog Discussion
Call your council. they can give you a trap, set it up in your yard then when the cat is caught it can be impounded for roaming depending on the council.. that happened to mums cat.. then finally she learnt to leave him inside. -
Not stafford, but yup my dog is the same... he was outside for a whole 10 minutes longer than normal yesterday, and you'd think I'd murdered him from the noise he was making
-
Mine does that too! I indignantly told him the other day that the dogs get more hugs and kisses than me... He still doesn't agree, even though I keep tally
-
Yes. Bundy is 'my' dog, but Diesel is 'his'. OH will rumble with the dogs ever afternoon when he gets home, and will happily smooch them on the couch. He used to dislike Bundy quite a lot, as he was a very unpleasant little rebel for a while. The first time he gave Bundy a cuddle and said "I love you, you're not actually that bad" then kissed him made me cry!! He always tells the dogs he loves them, and cuddles them goodbye before he leaves for work. On the whole they come to me more, and I can't do ANYTHING without them both following.. but OH can, but they still adore him... I'm just a bit more of a soft touch We have differing opinions on discipline, but that's about it. We've come to a happy medium that works for both of us. If we are going away, we take the dogs with us. We aren't a 'family' without the 'boys' along, they should be a part of it too as much as possible, within reason. OH assures me they are 'just dogs' and we can 'always get another one' but he was near tears over the fact our black boy has a lump on his leg that hasn't gone down with treatment and he now has to have surgery tomorrow... he's very upset that it might be cancer (but vet thinks malignant tumour).

10 minutes is fine I think, but everyone is different. The dog soon learns to eat when it's given food. I found with my pup though, that he often wouldn't eat lunch when I gave it to him, so it only took a few weeks to go back to 2 meals. Some people disagree with this, but I let him guide me as to when he's hungry. For brekkie you could give her a chicken wing or neck perhaps? Is the meat you are feeding raw or cooked? Raw is better for them Although, it sounds like your pup wasn't weaned, and thats something I don't have experience with, as my pup was already on solid food when he came home.

I wouldn't leave her the food to graze all day. When my boy was little he got 10 minutes to eat then it was gone. Now hes older, he knows to eat it when he's given or he doesn't get anything else. He values his food, whereas my aunts dog who grazes all day (and is very fat) doesn't value it at all as she knows it's always there. She won't need feeding through the night, she's probably just decided it's time to get up and play. Perhaps she's not tired enough when you put her to bed for the night? I found that when my boy was little, if he fell asleep after 6pm, we could NOT let him sleep... otherwise he'd keep us up at night wanting to play... it didn't take him long to work it out, and within a few weeks he was sleeping the whole way through except for the one loo break (which was because my partner would start work at 3, so he was up to let the dog out) and before long he wouldn't even get up when my partner did. The crying is because she's a baby, and lonely and doesn't want to be left home alone during the day. She will start to settle in a few weeks. As to the night time barking, that's not something i've experienced. My boy would cry, but we'd just ignore him. He'd get one loo break in the middle of the night, and that was it. When we took him out, we didn't speak to him or excite him, just out for toilet, back to bed no other interaction. 8 weeks is not to early for TOT. K9Pro is actually a member here, I'm sure he'd give some advice on it. Have you seen the big TOT thread in training?

How Do You Train A Kelpie Its Boundries?
Bundyburger replied to esther123's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
You don't necessarily have to fence off the whole 5 acres.. although it's got me stumped as to how your house placement means you *have* to do just that? Surely you can just build him a dog run? My kelpie doesn't need to run all day... he is just as happy to sleep inside on the couch -
Sorry for your loss Greytmate Thank you Jed, I know I will have to make a date within the next month & it kills me. My old boy has always been loyal & followed me but I have noticed that he has been following me alot more lately. I know he is tired & I will do the right thing by him. This thread has made me cry, I'm sorry for those who've lost loved pets recently... I think I'm about to make a decision soon as well :D Bit of denial going on in our house... she's not *there* yet, but I don't think it'll be long

Why do you feel bad? She's a dog... she's perfectly capable of entertaining herself. You aren't squashing her personality, you are training her, so she behaves how YOU want, not YOU behaving how SHE wants you to which is how it currently is She has you wrapped around her paw and knows it. Stop feeling so guilty
