Thomas is an ace little dog... And I'm not saying that only because he's my Penny's brother! Very tempted myself but reason has to prevail... Anna's dog are stunning both in type and temperament. Thomas just jumped off the page to me ... there's something special in his face & how he holds himself. And I loved his description... he's so well adjusted for living alongside his people. He's grabbed me.... & I'm a tibbie fanatic. :) That's great you own his sister, Penny. I bet she's got the same specialness.

Excellent advice. This was how I got our first tibbie, a retired showgirl. So far back, the first contact was made by just phoning around registered breeders & offering to send detailed relevant info (like you've described) by mail. Interestingly, I got that advice at that time, from the RSPCA Qld newsletter who were telling people looking for purebreds how to avoid buying from petshops. They gave the contact details for the Qld Kennel Association (as Dogs Qld was called then) & said it would provide a list of registered breeders. So that's where I got the phone numbers from.

Agree with RP. Depends on provision of essentials for physical & mental health and behaviour management ... & on the individual dog's response. Same applies to dogs kept by breeders. Our pet purebreds have been adopted after being in multi-dog groups with good breeders who provided all those necessities well ... for 5, 6 and 8 years. I have no problem BTW with dogs sleeping in kennels & having 'their space'. It's when dogs are 'caged' in kennels for the greatest proportion of their time that there's risk of adverse responses. As RP said this should be temporary.

They're great links, skyefool. Speaking only for myself, the handsome Thomas, in the mature dogs, (and his talents!) won me. :) None available at the moment, but the cocker spaniel rescue, on Pet Rescue, has rehomed some gorgeous cockers. They really are a beautiful breed. I could get tempted! http://www.petrescue.com.au/groups/10354?listings=rehomed

KC, I'm passionately in love with Max, the Mastiff X Boxer X Ridgie... who's become the 'demential specialist'. Seems he has many spectacular successes under this collar. http://www.pawspettherapy.com/Biographies.html As others have said.... this is such worthwhile work. Look forward to hearing your experiences after all the preliminaries are got thro'.

I agree with VM, do keep us up to date as you start on this most rewarding work. I loved reading the biographies on the site you posted. Showed what a wonderful range of dogs prove brilliantly suitable

Wuffles, your boy sounded like a wonderful doggie and just right for your situation at the time. Your planning & research sure paid off. I can truly imagine how much you'd miss this gentleman dog.

I Hoped I Would Never Have To Ask This :(
mita replied to Inka3095's topic in General Dog Discussion
Great news, Inka. -
Plus there'd been a post expressing interest in the breed. Which made me look up something about it. And your expression of hope was just that, VM ... an expression of hope. You were not laying down a condition for rehoming.

This is the picture I terrify my OH (and my JRT ; p) with lol! I tell him I'll get a similar tibbie pack when we retire and he won't even notice new ones :) Until the are having a tibbie stubborn strop of course ; X Want to push the OH over the edge, TT? Flash this one at him, too. Cheaper by the dozen. Click, enlarge. Note to self: Got to read showdog's list of responsibilities again. Or stop looking at these pics.

Looks like an old style French Priest to me :) So you reckon it's a bloke. Whatever he/she is, he/she has good taste in dogs. :) Probably a tribe of servants, too, to look after them. :) Which brings up the point that many have made.... there's a lot of time, effort and hard work in looking after dogs well. That, in itself, is a decider.

I thought the same. I love her fine lines & intelligent eyes.

but would you wear your hair like that too? I'm not even sure if that's a man or a woman. :) With a hair-do like that, who can tell. :) :) Or is it a hat?

Below is the number of dogs I'd like to have. But, I agree with the list of responsibilities and considerations that showdog posted. So, can't have them all. Tibbies, of course. :) click to enlarge:

A Link To " 8 Reasons Why Not To Shave Your Dogs Coat"
mita replied to Mystiqview's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think you must have specific reasons for shaving a specific dog. I've got 2 tibbies. One was born and bred in Scandinavia where the p/b tibbies have a double coat that's extremely thick. No way this one can deal comfortably with the Qld heat. So her coat is kept shaved & short. The expert groomer retains features that still make her look like her breed. Result is she's comfortable & looks cute. The other is Australian born and bred and her double coat is far, far less thick. Same for the Australian origin tibbie next door. No good reason at all to cut or shave their coats. They cope fine with the heat and good brushing to strip their coats. ADDING: I could not be clipping extremely short, my Scandinavian-origin tibbie IF she were still being shown. The experienced groomer rightly pointed out that it could affect adversely her full coat, if regrown. But she's ex-show and I continually keep the coat clipped. -
Blooming brilliant speech. Great point how sending rangers hunting after dogs based on appearance, diverts dog management away from actual behaviours which put community safety at risk. It's as stupid as giving police officers a list of physical attributes to concentrate on, in order to haul humans off to jail. May Ruby win through! Great result but I would point out that Ruby only came to the attention of the rangers when she was impounded for escaping her yard. A dog at large is a risk to itself and does potentially cause risk to the community. I hope her owners are appropriately grateful to Team Dog for the work put in to securing her safety AND that they take the necessary steps to ensure she never escapes again. One escape is understandable.. any more would not be. I referred to the general point about the nature of BSL made in the speech.... I started my post by saying I was referring to the speech . You red- highlighted the second sentence which was about that context. Reference was made to the general flaw in the BSL strategy of dog safety management, which is that certain dogs attract pre-judged adverse ranger attention based on appearance, per se. I made a parallel with policing of human safety. It's a valid point that Ruby was out and straying, which in itself needs future monitoring by owners who face penalties.... same as for any dog that has strayed. BSL takes away a level playing field in that regard, however. That is what Ruby should win through to ... a level playing field.

You're doing good. Mighty, mighty good.

The gem in the report about Ruby: She was found playing with the children at the local primary school. Sweet , sociable dog, safe with children. All that condemned her was a label someone guessed at, based on her appearance. Another person's guess could be entirely different. The insanity of BSL. Good on all fighting for her.

Makes much sense to me.

a loud YES from me here . if this boy has life threatening health issues - the professionals can train a dog to assist/work in the best way possible for him and his family. I would think they will also pick a robust and patient dog to cope with the loudness and erratic behaviour .... I feel a trained dog here could be a very useful extra pair of ears, and a nose & eyes could pick up health crises earlier ...plus being a comfort to the little one , and a calming influence on the family ... A 'Yes' to both posts. Wise advice.
