Thank you for your post Trinabean, lots of good info. Glad the heat isn't an issue, 40 here today and the SBT hasn't moved from the kitchen floor. We are in Kalgoorlie but do come to Perth throughout the year. Good to know about the facebook page. As we unfortunately don't have any dog clubs here, any pup I get I am going to have to do all training and socialisation on my own, so it will mean some travel for me because I don't want a large unruly dog  So I might be able to time my visits with some meet ups. I don't mind shedding, they are dogs after all, but I'm not up for GSD or Lab type shedding!

I mean, you couldn't get any cuter if you tried Any dog I have becomes part of our lives and we include them in our daily lives as much as we can. Yes, I have the problem that I can't get to see a wide range of dogs due to my location but we do travel and have met some lovely boxers. Most people tell me they are pretty full on for the first two years but I think a lot of dogs are. Jed, I have read your great post on here about your philosophy on bringing up a boxer pup and I think it is great!

Thank you Jed, very helpful. I am not ready for a dog/pup until later this year so it will give me plenty of time to research the breed and breeders. Still deciding if the breed is right for me.
  4. I know you probably don't care but I have to let you know it is the kicking tee! I do remember Bomber and he was brilliant, pity I can't find any video of him. After some pretty sad days recently, lovely to see such a nice video :)

How do boxers go in very hot climates? I am talking about rural WA (so a very dry heat mainly), with February mainly being over 35 for the whole month with the occasional week of 40 and over. And are they heavy shedders? I have a SBT who sheds (obviously) but unless I am cuddling her, it is not overly noticeable.
  6. I wish I had this problem, the SBT just crawls into the empty space left by OH and takes over the snoring duties  When I was a teenager my dad used to let the dog in to wake us all up for our morning chores, he would try to dig us out and then move onto the next child. It was like being woken up by a mini tornado.
  7. GoPro have one as well. http://shop.gopro.com/APAC/mounts/fetch-dog-harness/ADOGM-001.html?gclid=CjwKEAiAlb6lBRCBw4jC-bb3uykSJAB55Ti99H8aT2cbkyXRlyjHSo3LuillWNER1H9aN-y03q-4yhoCQ0Hw_wcB#/start=1 But if I was going to leave a camera on all day I would prefer to wait for this collar (large dogs only though!) http://www.cnet.com/au/products/motorola-scout-5000/
  8. I feed at all times of the day, I don't like the 'expectation' of being fed at a certain time. After reading this thread I feel like a right bitch! My dog gets a once a day feed, and if she starts looking like she is putting on weight I skip a day. We had working dogs when I was growing up in the 70's and they were fed every second day, and were fed a combination of raw and PAL dog biscuits (one or the other). When an animal was butchered, they had a feast! I would have thought that any working dog should be fed every day, I really feel every second day would leave them very hungry indeed. Animals like routine, yes it can be a pain if you have to change your own and they get a bit worrisome but it's part of pet ownership. I suppose that was what my father had always done, the dogs were extremely hard workers. Life wasn't easy in remote locations like ours, even for us! I remember my brother almost dying waiting for the Flying Doctors. I feed at all times of the day, I don't like the 'expectation' of being fed at a certain time. We had working dogs when I was growing up in the 70's and they were fed every second day, and were fed a combination of raw and PAL dog biscuits (one or the other). When an animal was butchered, they had a feast! Why wouldn't you just feed smaller portions every day instead of completely skipping a day? That's what I do with Stan much to his disgust. Mine are fed twice a day and a chicken wing at lunch. It is what works for us, it has taken a while for us to get the balance right, she gets very small meals now as it is. I fast once a week myself and have been for a while now and feel a lot better since. I don't fast her once a week though.

  10. From the person who posted the video (I have only quoted one paragraph). I think it is telling that a professional doesn't think it is a good idea.
  11. How do they prevent dog fights? My friend's dog was attacked by another dog in some pet facility and I wonder if this could have been prevented. For this reason I am very worry to place my dog in pet motels. I don't board my dog very often but when I do, I always choose a facility that does not allow dogs to mix. So they have their exercise time by themselves.
  12. Yes, because Americans believe that being a ____wit is their God-given (and constitutional) right. Most states also allow any halfwit to own assault rifles, excuse violent pornography as "freedom of speech," have active chapters of the KKK, and armed militia dedicated to the destruction of the Federal government. With rants like this, no one will take anything you say seriously.
  13. This reminds me of when I was living in the ACT and a work mate said that he was glad he didn't live in NSW because they get funnel web spiders
  14. I would love a dobe but get put off by the health problems. I am now pretty sure my next dog will be Rhodesian Ridgeback, next year after we go on our big holiday hopefully. But I will also always have a bull breed rescue in my life
  15. I don't think it is an odd observation at all! We are currently researching our next breed. We have a female SBT so the next pup will be a male. We are looking at all different types of breeds but have found a bit of a gender difference in the ads for small and large breeds. Males seem to be snapped up in larger breeds but females in smaller breeds. This is a huge generalisation based only on my observation at looking at the ads on DOL/breeders facebook pagers over the last month or so, and size and gender balance of the litters make a difference but it was obvious enough to me to make that observation!
  16. Thanks for sharing. I had seen the original story but hadn't seen that he had been adopted
  17. I pay my house and car insurance yearly, as well as health insurance, but if I change insurers half way through the year, I get a refund for the balance of the year. So if you pay a whole year of pet insurance and the animal dies, you get nothing? ETA: this includes making claims, I got paid out for damage to my house and the insurer sucked. I got my claim approved, moved insurers, got a refund for the balance of the year. Haven't done it on health insurance though.
  18. RIP, Hector Was a beautiful soul despite humans trying to make him otherwise.
  19. What a gorgeous boy! Looks very cheeky
  20. Does sound like Victoria may get a new government soon, I wonder if this will have any affect on these cases? If I was in Victoria I would be letting the Liberal government know exactly why I wasn't voting for them.
  21. I looked into this a while ago but most of them require mobile phone coverage to work (therefore a sim card and a plan or prepaid), the only one that didn't was the Sportsdog one which was really expensive. That one that you have linked is an American one and isn't supported in Australia. This one is similar but for Australia. http://pettrackingoz.com.au/products/petrek-lt-905g I ended up not bothering as I was looking for something for when we went camping and most places we go don't have any mobile coverage.
  22. The meter readers in our area won't even open the gate if there is a beware of the dog sign. We self read our power, our water meter has a thing on it that self reads and the gas people ring. Which is lucky, as we have a six foot fence around our house that only has an electric gate to enter through  Lots of people in our area do. We got building permission to do the fence so I think that having to provide a clear entry to your front door is a bit of a myth as well.
  23. Susan Garrett tweeted out this blog by Jessica Dolce, for me it is a good read. It is about how some animal health care professionals are affected by their work. http://jessicadolce.com/depression-suicide-animal-care-professions/
  24. What a cutie! Can't believe the toy has lasted, mine would have had the stuffing out of it at some stage of puppyhood.
  25. OMG, was she sick? I have her books and videos, she was quite young ETA: Found her facebook page and they are requesting privacy at the sudden shock RIP Dr Yin
