  1. Good to see you have contacted someone. Have you gone down to the dog club you want to join (without your dog) and discussed it with them? They may be able to help.
  2. I agree, what a terrible thing to have to go through. The poor child was playing in the yard with four large dogs!
  3. They look great, first time I saw this was on a Susan Garrett video. I have since seen crates built like pieces of furniture, which is what I would prefer so if I moved, the piece would come with me. My favourite is a nice jarrah type wood TV stand, crate on either end with DVD player etc in the middle. Another one is crates that are used as bedside tables, drawer and all!
  4. To be honest, when I first read the OP my immediate thought was that someone was posting to get a bite. There have been some similar types in the past, someone even posted a test type post to see the reactions that they got and 'fessed up later in the thread. So I wouldn't be too harsh on people. Anyway, to the OP, so sorry you and your dog had to go through this. No one should have to. Speedy recovery to you both.
  5. I find it very hard to believe that you can't fool a SBT to take a pill wrapped up in food Mine ate a cotton ball the other day. We were in the kitchen putting some dettol on a sore finger and a clean cotton ball dropped down on the floor. The SBT swooped in and ate it! Not sure who was more surprised me or her.
  6. I give the owners the skills to shape behavior and understand why things happen. I even hand people a dog that is not their own so they can learn where the gaps in their handling are. I'm not a rinse and repeat, on trick pony. That's too boring ;) I have clients that have gotten new puppies or another dog and we havn't had to start again from scratch with them they have the skills to kick off the training unaided. I just don't hold the belief that training needs to be so darn expensive that only the privilaged few are entitled to it. Which is great for people who have access to you. What about the rest of the population that don't have access to good dog trainers? I have done her recallers course and loved it but as I don't do agility this sort of course isn't for me. She has hinted at doing an online 'pet' owners course.
  7. Well, it looks like Princess has been sold. Most people I know don't worry about breed and just go for a 'type' of dog they want eg short haired, small etc. The high price hopefully stops impulse buying.
  8. That cone looks huge, my mastiff x didn't have a cone that big!! When I picked her up from the surgeon after having TPLO surgery she had the cone on and it only really came a few centimetres past her nose, it did look like it had been cut down though. Thankfully she didn't really need it as she sat for about an hour (in the car) with her head hanging I ended up stopping and taking it off and she laid down and went to sleep.
  9. I heard on the radio that several zoos had contacted them willing to take him. It does make me wonder if there was more to it.
  10. I still haven't watched Red Dog. I am such a sook!
  11. We were doing hill work to strengthen her legs, I have to drive out to bush to find a half decent hill. I hope that my experience is different to yours, cavNrott, the first surgery went so well. She is currently crated and on lead again, even for toilet breaks as I don't want to aggravate her 'good' leg. And yep, ness, I think this time I will go a lot slower with recovery. I feel so bad for her, I hate taking her to have surgery!
  12. I am 16 weeks out from TPLO surgery with my girl. I was determined to save the other one despite the surgeon saying it was almost certain she would need it on the other side. Last week while out walking I decided to let her off lead (first time since surgery, outside the confines of our yard) for a swim in a dam as it was hot, she saw a bunny and now we are booked in to do the other leg next week So please learn from my mistake. On the upside, the fixed leg held up well, so the surgery is worth it! Not that I recommend letting your dog chase bunnies flat out to test it (bunny got away, as they always do)
  13. Wow, what a different attitude to the one you had last night and I see you have gone back and edited your responses! Back on topic: At the end of the day, almost every 'expert' has come out in opposition of BSL but yet the government doesn't seem to listen. There are so many better alternatives than BSL.
  14. I recently had a lump removed from my lower lip which now has three dissolvable stitches in it. As you can imagine, being on the lip it is hard to keep dry and still! It started to get a bit inflamed, infected and itchy. On doctors advice I started to apply antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and anaesthetic cream but it wasn't really helping, except for easing the itch. After reading this thread I dipped into the dog's bag of calendula tea, brewed some up and applied it to my lip. Stung for a few seconds and then relief, and it looks a lot calmer as well. So, now I brew some everyday and keep it in the fridge and some if for my lips and some is for the dog's paws  And I don't mind it to drink, but I am a herbal tea lover and it is a really mild one.
  15. Have you thought of crating him while he is in the house? Just while you work out some of his issues. Personally I would be following Susan Garretts Ruff Love but that can also be rather intensive and time consuming, but at least the dog is crated when not being trained and you can relax a bit. And I would be teaching him to go to his crate when the door is knocked on or when the bell is pushed, but once again this takes time and patience. Not saying you don't have it but you have been through the wringer. Maybe a different behaviourist? Don't beat yourself up either if you have to go down the euthanasia path. Just some suggestions, no one can diagnose over the internet and we don't know you and your limitations but you sound like you are really trying. Good luck with it all.
  16. Our JRTx was a great mouser, we didn't have rats. Boy was he fast, he also got a couple of small birds. Kept up with the Kelpies at times!! He was an outside dog as he lost a huge amount of hair, so take that into consideration, he always had to go in the back of the ute when taken around the farm, Dad wouldn't have him in the cab! Not yappy at all. Never killed a chicken, he shared the house yard with the chooks and did so right from the moment we brought him home (6 weeks old back in the day). We got him from another farming family, so his 'lines' were from farming stock. He died when he was 17.
  17. I'm more worried about the human race after going on that website
  18. I would have no problems with flying a pup but if possible I would go and pick the pup up from the breeder, even if it meant a long drive (within reason). I like to meet the breeder in person and see Mum and thank her  , see the other pups, how many had already gone etc etc, it is part of the excitement and fun of getting a pup for me. It's the whole puppy experience :)
  19. My vet often gives me a discount. I have no idea why but am presuming it has nothing to do with where my dog came from and more likely to be because I have spent a fortune at the vet on one of my dogs. So in my opinion, if they have a bit of flexibility in their fees on some procedures/items, why not offer a discount to rescue? No different to the local bakery sponsoring the football club. Shouldn't be expected though.
  20. I struggle with joining the dots with this one. Most people who take their dogs in the car with them are generally people who care about their dogs or else they would be stuck out in the backyard doing nothing. So why the hell do they leave them a car on a hot day?! People who leave children in the car, well, I can't even begin.
  21. I presume they mean a dangerous dog declaration. Seems a bit rough though considering the dogs were let out, having said that if a three year old could let them out, I am not sure that the were adequately contained. Yes, I hope Mum got a telling off!! Especially if it wasn't a one off. A three year old wandering with no supervision?? Where is the story about that??!!
  22. Won't help with dew claws  I have one who won't tolerate a dremel and will only have the clippers, I don't think she likes the sensation of the grinding. The other one doesn't care about nails being trimmed with anything as long as the treats keep coming!! I used kikopups method of getting my dogs to relax for nail clipping. It did take a while and requires patience. http://youtu.be/LHgBvnQ71ss
  23. I understand what you are saying but from reading that report the banned statement comes from the guy who was walking the dog, which I suppose he would want the dogs banned. What puzzles me is why does this even get media attention? I would hazard a guess that there are dogs attacking dogs every day of the week around Australia, what triggers a newspaper article? (A second look says to me that it appears to be a local type paper, which could explain the interest)
  24. We used to wet down our 17 year old JRT x, he hated it while it was happening but he looked a lot better after the cooling down. I wet him down with a large sponge which, I hope, was a bit gentler for him.
