What's Your 10 Second Info Grab?
rusty&biscuit replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in General Dog Discussion
For the Schipperke: What sort of dog is THAT? He's so unusual and cute! He's a schipperke A WHAT? A schipperke *Failed attempt at name* Then have a laugh and off they go. I don't get very far without people asking me. However if they are interested I am only more than happy to tell them about the breed :D At work however (I work in a petstore), when I ask people buying dog products what type of dogs they have, they ask me back, and are very intrigued by schipperke. So I try and explain what he looks like by saying, imagine a small black husky with a shorter coat and a curly tail. That usually does the trick  Aussie: Most people assume he's a BC, so I correct them and they are interested where the breed comes from, etc. After they usually say "typical americans", or something along the lines of that  But reading through this thread and coming by the people calling Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, King Charles, at my work I more commonly hear of peoples pet "King Charles Cavalier" (rolly eyed man) -
I sometimes (very rarely) give Cherry the core of my apple, she loves it :D Hasn't done her any harm in her 11 years either
-
They look nothing like Aussie to me, lots of breeds can have blue eyes :) Can you just put one breed? My rescue boy is just registered as a "Crossbreed" but the vet calls him "German Shepherd X". Edit: For a pup to be brindle, doesn't one parent need to be brindle? Agree, I don't think they look very Aussie. Dingo actually came to mind when I saw them though

Love reading through these! Rusty my Aussie shepherd is usually a BC, because he does look a lot more BC than Aussie anyway  However at the AG shows "experts" tell their friends he's a kelpie cross, or a long haired kelpie. But they're fine when I tell them the breed, quite facsinated actually. When I tell them the breed history, the American's always get critisized  People always ask me if Biscuit is a pom X, then I say no, a schipperke :) "a WHAT?" then I say it a few more times before they catch on  Some people ask if that is a designer breed, but I promptly correct them ;) And Cherry is just a staffy X who knows what, but it's fun hearing peoples guesses :)

I might sound like an idiot here, but is that 2 & 12, or 2 x 12 meaning the dog is 24? I think you will find one grey is 14 and two greys are 12 & a half. Meaning 3 greyhounds all together :) Oh, that's awkward
-
Haha, agree with EtH  But hey, my dogs love 'em too!

Would You Feed Treats A Random Dog At The Dog Park?
rusty&biscuit replied to ❤LovesPoodles❤'s topic in General Dog Discussion
No, I don't think it is acceptable, however the lady was probably trying to be kind and thinking she was doing the right thing, so maybe just a kind explanation :) I always ask the owners before I give their dog a treat, if I give them one. But my 3 are fairly good, if there is someone approaching without a dog, or the instance I see a small dog, I call them back and get them to wait until the person/child has past, or get them to heel as we walk past. The they get extra treats! And if the person has a dog, that's where the focus is, they don't really care for other people. In fact, Cherry goes for a quick run then decides she is a starving mongrel, so won't leave my side, Biscuit will play with any other dog or chase his ball, and Rusty's biggest thing is getting to p*ss all up the beach *insert rolly-eyed emoticon here* However in your instance, I do find dog parks more difficult. More people visit who all have treats, whereas majority at the beach don't, which leads to dogs being fed. I guess it's just a lack of experience/education on the topic -
I have 3, and I find it hard enough giving them all individual attention  So my question to everyone is, how do you do it? Trying to dish out individual attention to hard, but I want more and do see how I'd cope

Good luck with your search on the puppy :D I am not much help really, as I have only been in the purebred dog world for 4 years. But if you don't feel comfortable with this breeder, find another - the human instinct is fairly strong and if it doesn't feel right, run in the other direction! I am SO lucky with my breeders. Rusty I got from where I live, but have a great relationship still with his breeders, and they have helped us so much! Then my schip who I shipped up from SA, I was very lucky with his breeder too...we still keep in touch and she is a lovely lady :) Do you mind me asking what breed you're getting? :)

Erny, they are just sown on bits of material, so nothing to worry about there :D

Biscuit's favourite is flower pots and empty yoghurt tubs. But seeing as this is a gift to your sister in a way, I'm sure she wouldn't want to open a package only to discover a bunch of rubbish  All my 3 are different, they like different things. Cherry likes chewing rope and tennis balls, but her favourite is destuffing soft toys. Then Biscuit likes this that roll around, but they have to be big, like flower pots, empty yoghurt tubs, and he loves his sentinel ball which I got for free from work. Then Rusty likes what everyone else has got  I found though, that they all reeeeally like this toy, and it has lasted ages too! http://www.amazon.com/KONG-Teddy-Bear-Medium-Brown/dp/B0000632T8

This has to be the BEST three lines I have read on DOL this year. Absolutely gold, but so true. Second that!! Sooo funny!!!

I am so sorry for your loss, I really am, I lost a dog too young as well. I am however very offended that by treating my dogs and dogs, that I think they are lower life forms and inconviniences. I love them to death, heck, they do so much for me. They keep me fit, they make me smile, make me happy. They can sleep on my bed if they like, but only when I say so. And funnily enough, one is a small dog who does not think like a human and can be left alone without stressing! Doesn't mean he doesn't love me, because he does. I have experienced first hand a dog treated like a child, and a dog treated like a dog, in the same family. The 'child' was the most anxious, nervous wreck of a horrible little thing. Ended up being run over by a car. Their next dog, I helped them train, is one of the most well adjusted dogs I have met. He is treated like a dog of the 21st century, not a child, and is so happy - not like their previous dog. Although I don't agree with his methods, I suggest you watch Caesar Millan. Or at least read the book "The Other End of The Leash", it is excellent. If you're dog is happy and well adjusted being a child, that is fine. But please don't assume that because I don't treat my dog like a human being that I love him any less than you love yours :)

Looking forward to the schip results, wish I was there!!

I don't know about importing dogs form overseas, or personally know any breeders for that matter, but from dogzonline here is a link to the 2 registered breeders in Australia: http://dogzonline.com.au/breeds/breeders/finnish-spitz.asp Hopefully someone much more informed will step in here, and help you out a ton more than I can

I HATE ear cropping, so as long as that's not here, I'm fine with that

Wow, petshops SHIP them? I am so glad the one I work in only has pups about once a year, and they are from locals who approach us. There is also a 3 day cooling off period, and they are actively encouraged to get their dog desexed, and are educated on the breed beforehand. I just thought all petshops worked like that, I am appauled. And I agree about what others have said with just ignoring any topics on the dog, you want to keep your relationship. I know the worst feeling was when my parents told me they were disappointed for what I had done, and refused to talk to me about th subject. Much more effective than a lecture.

Wether dogs have tails or no tails doesn't entirely bother me. If they have a tail, cool, if not, that's cool too. They're all dogs, to me it's their personality that counts the most...and of course their cute little faces I own a ship with a tail who holds it beautifully, but I also love the ones born without tails. :)
