  1. To clarify, I think the idea of DeGas is to give it asap and get straight to a vet. Yes, this is what I would be doing with it.
  2. Snap! :) Activated charcoal or de-gas works too :) Awesome, I'll keep these in mind.
  3. I thought it was interesting that you could give them something like Mylanta gas for any gas symptoms. I think I'll have to get some to keep in my pantry. It said you could try nutmeg too which is handy to know as I have heaps of that here. How do his gums look? If he gets really restless I'd give the vet another call. It sounds like he's probably okay though if he's calm and sleeping well now though, but it's probably a good idea to keep an eye on him for a bit.
  4. I know your fears. I get a bit paranoid about bloat so try and do what I can to prevent it. Kyojin eats quickly, but isn't a scoffer. If he was I'd get him a scoff stop bowl to slow his eating down. I don't allow him to eat an hour before or after exercise. I love this website as the information is really clear and easy to read: http://www.globalspan.net/bloat.htm It's a bullet point list, so it's really easy to understand and gives you some tips on what you can do to try and reduce the chances of it occurring.
  5. I have my fingers crossed here too. They must be besides themselves with worry
  6. Happy birthday Hoover you handsome boy! What a great cake :D
  7. Kikuya is terrible for dogs imo. We seeded our front lawn with it, and even with the very little amount of traffic it got on it, it died very quickly. It doesn't really spring up once you walk on it and dies very quickly from urine burns.
  8. Gorgeous! That's so lovely that you were able to take four of them on.
  9. Yup, the reason I have a Spitz breed is because I can't stand shedding!
  10. I've been happy with QLD so far, but I only own one dog and aren't involved in any activities as such, so there hasn't been an opportunity oft problems for me. I am very much in favour of dog limits (without obtaining a permit for more) and would hate to see these restrictions dropped. Until this thread I had never heard of lifetime registration which I think is a good idea. It sounds incredibly cheap compared to here. My last council had reasonable fees - I think it was $20 per year and this covered you for 12 months from when you paid. In my new council, the fees are higher. If I was to register a dog now I would only be covered until September and the cost was still around $20 to register just until then!
  11. She sounds like her weight is probably fine. How much is she at the moment? In terms of getting her to eat her food more willingly you could also try adding a bit of chicken stock to her kibble or a small amount of wet food for flavour. That's great that she's enthusiastic about eating the chicken necks. Maybe you could give them to her frozen so that she needs to work at them a bit more.
  12. Like others have suggested, I would definitely soak her food. I soaked Kyojin's kibble every meal for ages (though we ended up mostly continuing this so as to increase his water intake). Are you feeding as much as what her breeder had her on? I never raw fed Kyojin, but the amounts sound about right for what we fed him when he was that age. We were giving him a biscuit bone for morning and afternoon tea at that age as well (breeder's recommendations). Looking at Kyojin's spreadsheet, he was putting on about 1kg every week too which seemed to be pretty normal from what I've seen with other Akitas. This is a growth chart for Akitas which should give you a rough idea: Edit: Sorry it posted while I was still typing. Edit again. Dammit, I format it in my post but when I actually submit the post it stuffs it up. I think I'll add the table as an image instead. Okay! Hopefully this works I wouldn't worry too much about her actual weight though as long as she's putting some on, and that her ribs aren't too obvious. If you can really feel her ribs then she's underweight. Adding water, natural yoghurt and a raw egg once a week really helped make food super appealing to him. He's never been fussy though, which can be common in the breed.
  13. Just to clarify because my words weren't as clear as I thought, I wasn't condoning the behaviour of the dogs or saying that they were well trained and should behave in this way. What I meant was that I don't like breeds being mentioned (in any of these stories), particularly when in this case the dogs were not raised as loving family pets, so including their breed isn't particularly helpful for people who are unfamiliar with the breed, or dogs in general. Articles like this tend to make many members of Joe Public assume then that all dogs of a certain breed are prone to behave in such a way.
  14. Agreed, I don't think that breed should ever be mentioned, particularly in a case like this where the dogs were trained guard dogs. I'm relieved to hear that it wasn't a fatal attack at least. Good on the two men for stepping in to help, even though it put themselves in danger. It would have been a very scary situation for everyone.
  15. OFC Minx, I didn't mean to imply anything bad, all of the above (except substitue the "thick coat" bit for "tenacious courage") is true of my breed too, a long history of baby sitting, police & military work (S&R), as well as a herding dog (yes really). Not to say they can't be great with other dogs - you can see plenty of pics of Jarrah mixing with other dogs in the APBT thread in the breed sub forums. But with any breed it pays to know the breed history and to realise that often really does have an impact on the dog's behaviour, and manage socialisation accordingly carefully. I don't know what OFC means. Sorry, I wasn't meaning your post in particular so I promise you I didn't mean to jump on you or anything, there were quite a few comments in response to Akitas so I thought I'd better clarify as some comments (without a bit of further insight) can be a bit misleading.
  16. Just to clarify, akitas weren't used as fighting dogs because of aggression. They were used because of their thick coats and curly tail. Other dogs would suffer a lot of injuries to their tails or because of their thinner coats. This made akitas desirable dogs to own as they could really take a beating. Dog fighting is also the least of activities that they were ever involved in. They are more known for bear hunting, police work and baby sitting, the latter which particularly speaks more for their temperament than fighting. Yes, they do much prefer the company of people to other dogs. They are used to working either alone or in pairs only. They require socialization just like every other dog. It's extremely common amongst akita breeders and owners to have owned rotties at some stage. I think they both can be wonderful family dogs (having also owned rotties myself) if obtained from a reputable breeder and given proper training and socialization.
  17. I really feel for you Ness. About the same time after Kyojin's patella surgery I was having the same fears. His leg seemed to be worse if anything and I was miserable thinking that I'd made the wrong choice. All I wanted was for him to have a normal life, to run and play with other dogs again. So I was upset with myself for making him worse. We didn't realise how long the recovery would be. We had been told that they could walk the next day, and would build up to more exercise. My husband works in human orthopedics so we were used to the much shorter recovery times. At one stage our surgeon and another vet (who we saw first about our worries while our surgeon was away) were concerned that they may need to operate again to do some tweaking. They told us to give it a few more weeks, and if we saw no improvement in that time, they'd do the procedure again. Before we knew it, his knee really started to strengthen and he began to start walking on it. The recovery process was still really long though. We had to keep Kyojin confined and quiet, only allowed to walk around the yard to go to the toilet etc, for a full SIX months. We've only just last month been given the all clear that he's now free to do whatever he wants again. This was after also restricting his exercise for 6 months BEFORE the surgery as well so that things didn't get worse. (Had to wait 6 months to operate because he was still a pup). I really hope that your situation will be the same, that it may seem like things are worse now, but before you know it, she'll be starting to use her leg again and putting her weight on it. It is such a worrying time though, so I understand your concerns. The recovery process afterwards is pretty miserable, but I really hope that she'll come good. I have my fingers crossed for you guys.
  18. Love all the photos. It's funny how animals like to choose the smallest bed to lie in.
  19. Yea it's very cute that he can lie up there and be the same height as Kuma. Kyojin prefers to lie on the floor too, so I think they must get a bit hot on beds/cushions.
  20. at Kuma and Hoover playing bitey face on the day bed. Especially when Elbie turned around to give them that 'Do you have to do this right next to me?!' Look. And loved Kuma at the end going 'Is there room for me too??'
  21. Ooh I'm so jealous KTB!! Bet your boys are loving having a sleepover party
  22. Yea, the RSPCA often has sales on adoption prices. They had St Catricks Day this year, where adult cats could be adopted for free with the purchase of a bag of food.
  23. I honestly have no idea what I would do with Kyojin. I don't trust anyone I know to give him the love and care that we do. I have one friend that believes animals are part of the family, but I don't think she could handle Kyojin's size.
  24. Ooooh yay! I had no idea you were getting him. That's so awesome. Love Sammies :D
  25. You've heard very wrong I'm afraid. Long hair doesn't necessarily equal maintenance or shedding. In fact, a lit of short haired breeds shed a lot more.
