  1. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum Please feel free to move it somewhere more appropriate if it is :) A shameless plug here, my parents are looking at renting out their home in Mt Waverley. I'm not going to do the whole spiel, I'll just leave it at it's a beautiful family home, would be perfect for a family with elderly but independent parents or for a family with grown children who have moved back home to save for a deposit. Best of all, it's pet friendly!!! Here's the link: http://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-vic-mount+waverley-414352851
  2. I'm surprised no one's mentioned the easiest way to get space at a dog park - put your dog in a muzzle!! Mine don't go to parks anymore (I bought acres instead, and we can go on lovely bushwalks close to home so I rarely have to worry about other dogs), but when they did, standard conversation went: **Their dog starts charging up to mine* Me: "Control your dog, call it away" Them: "It's okay, he's friendly" Me: "That's nice, mine's not!" They'd get their dogs away in a hurry. It works even when I was out the ones who aren't fear aggressive too :D
  3. This photo pretty much sums up Thundercleese - He's he only dog I know who can look that sad while sitting in the sunshine 5 minutes after getting awesome pats. ETA: didn't attach photo so good. Removed dunce's cap then tried again.
  4. My oldest is at least 11. Dobe x Kelpie, he's a little stiff in the back end but no other issues. He's started rusting in the last 12 months, and his eyes are starting to get a little cloudy, but he's only selectively deaf!! He now responds to "old man" :)
  5. Back when I was a kid (about 9ish) my Mum thought it would be a great idea to get a JRT puppy for my Grandfather as a birthday present. I of course agreed, because I was 9 and puppies are adorable. He was a freaking terror! He's now a geriatric 15 year old, is blind in both ees and has finally mellowed, but it took a loooooong loooong time!
  6. 5 seems to be the number here :) 2 of them were on purpose, the rest were all "accidents" I decided that although it is a lot of work, I really like having a pack. We were almost down to 4 because the 3 girls were not getting along at all in any way, so our rotti x went to live with my sister where she could be the queen of everything again (all the tension was arising from the fact that she used to be the boss but the youngest one knocked her off her throne, and the other girl's just a bitch :p) So I was all geared up to have a 4 dog house, and actually looking forward to collapsing one of the crates down and being able to use one of the armchairs in the lounge room. ...then I heard from my sister that her friend had had to drop her bull arab off at the rspca a week before that. I called her, got mad at her for not calling her local crazy dog lady, then nervously spoke to nathan about it with a mouth full of platitudes like "it should only be temporary, possibly long-ish term temporary, but still temporary" He immediately responded with "it doesn't matter, when are you picking him up?" So we had 4 at home for a whole weekend, and nathan said the house felt weirdly empty. I don't think we have a choice in having 5 :)
  7. My old man's getting on in years (we figured he's at least 11 as he was "about 2" when I met him and I've known him for about a decade, owned him for the last 6 years), and old things tend to fall apart and break down etc. A few weeks ago we had a couple of friends over for dinner, when one of them said to me "ummm, why is there a tube of lube on top of the fridge?" My immediate response was "oh, no, it's for the dog" ... hold on, that makes it sound worse His doodle doesn't always go back where it belongs, so we have to help sometimes. :)
  8. Hi Disintegratus...do you mean "Military Life" as in Returned Vets??? My Hubbie is a Vietnam Vet in his late 60's & the best thing that ever happened to him (apart from shacking up with me  ) was to get involved in dog training :) They even have programs now where they give a dog to a returned serviceman/woman & get the person involved in the dogs training. Well, his Dad was career Navy, so most of his joints are shot from climbing up and down ladders for years on end. His Mum wasn't military but has other "old person heebie jeebies" (her wording, not mine!!) Tbh, I think the dogs have always been mostly his Mum's doing, she's always been a bit of a crazy critter person. His Dad adores them just as much as she does, but I don't think he'd ever stoop so low as to admit that he missed having dogs in the house, even though it was blatantly obvious!
  9. Oh yes, Mum was very judgemental of my horribly cruel "cages", until a weekend when I brought all 4 (at the time) with me to her house because there were fires near home and they literally would not have fit in Nathan's tiny car. I set their crates up on the decking outside, and she saw how excited they were to go into them and how they immediately settled and went to sleep. She's not quite a convert, but she hasn't said another word about how cruel crates are :)
  10. I agree with a lot of other posters, I don't believe that the number has much to do with whether you're capable of looking after a dog. My partners parents had 5 little white fluffy mutts when we met 6 years ago. Over the last six years they've all dropped off one by one, and last time I went to their house there weren't any dogs there and it just wasn't right. I spoke to his mum about whether they were going to get another and she was of the opinion that they were too old (they're in their 60s, but military life 60s, so battered and broken :)) Although I assured her there would always be a place here for any critters they had, she was still reluctant. However, a couple of months later, Nathan told me they were adopting a couple of middle aged fluffies. Sometimes, it is what it is. Crazy dog people will be crazy dog people and there's no shame in that and no problem as long as there's support, or at least a contingency plan.
  11. My mum judges me all the time, my dogs are too skinny, I'm too mean to them, etc etc etc. But conversely, I judge her just as badly, her dogs are too fat and have no manners! :)
  12. I have 5 (4 over 30kg and one kelpie) when 3 of them are girls and you never wanted girls, 5 is too many. I think if they were all boys, or 4 boys and one girl, 5 would be excellent. For me, three was a great number, truth be told two after them were accidents! I like three because it does give you that flexibility of being able to take one and not leave one at home alone, but 3 (depending on size of course :p) is also a manageable number to take anywhere on your own. Just don't get three girls. Three girls is awful! I was sooooo unprepared for girls.
  13. My dobe x kelpie makes what I call "Harley noises". If you didn't know him, you'd think he was growling, but they're actually just noises of complete and utter contentment, usually accompanied by happy stretches and more moaning and groaning. He's an odd old boy :)
  14. I used to have my llot on the costco food, I've tried all the different types. They did really really well on it and found it very palatable (though that's no indication, apparently poop is very palatable to my lot). I really liked it, and would recommend it, I've stopped using it partly because it's really inconvenient for me to get to costco these days, and also Nathan tends to overfeed them when there's dry food so it's easier to just not have it at all.
  15. Mine get fed once a day, at whatever time they get fed. Sometimes it's 9am, sometimes it's 11pm, or anywhere in between. They also occasionally have starve days This works really well for me, because a) i'm not very good at following a schedule, and b) I like to be able to maintain flexibility. It has certainly come in handy, about a year ago when we'd just moved (and didn't know any of the neighbours), my grandpa passed away and (long story short), the dogs ended up being home alone for almost 48 hours. We had no issues at all :) I wouldn't make a habit of leaving them alone for so long of course, but we didn't have much of an option at the time.
  16. Nathan always used to look at me disapprovingly when he'd drag himself out of bed at 10am-ish, and the dogs were still in their crates (I would have been awake by 7am at the latest) Until I woke him up early one day and he tried to get them to go outside to toilet before 10am!
  17. After much research and deliberation, I have come to the conclusion that the length of a dog's fur is directly proportionate to how sad and pathetic they manage to look when being bathed. :p
  18. I forgot to add, the only reason I didn't buy more was that we now have 5 dogs, and I don't think there's enough room in my house for 5 of those! They are quite large. Also, I found the website I was looking for, it's Cost Less Pets.:D
  19. Just thought I'd mention, I found Hurtta dog coats for 20% off at mammothpetsupplies.com.au You might have to sign up for their mailing list though, not sure.
  20. We bought a couple of the beds from costco, the $40 ones without the bolster several years ago. They were amazing! We had two, and eventually for whatever reason they ended up outside and literally lived in a mud puddle for over 12 months. after this, one of them did die, but the other one, I threw out the filling, washed the outer cover and now use it full of old clothes etc and it is still in great condition. Absolute bargain at the price they are!
  21. Thanks, but I'm sure it was a different website, the had free shipping on everything all the time. I knew I should have put it in my phone, but I thought it was easy to remember so didn't bother. It's been on the tip of my tongue since I woke up this afternoon. On the plus side, all of my dogs, for the first time in their lives, will have actual decent brand name beds instead of blankets/old doonas etc. I'm going to be so mad if when they wreck them!!
  22. So, I have no idea who I was speaking to this morning before the doors opened, a lovely British Bulldog lady, but she suggested a pet supplies site that I cannot for the life of me remember. "Cheap pet supplies" or "discount pet products" or something like that, all I remember was that it had free shipping. I know it's not much to go on, but does anyone happen to know what site I'm on about?
  23. Oh, I did :D Also, spent waaaaay too much money. Oops!
  24. Justrace, do you happen to know what time they open? I work night shift, so don't want to be sitting on their doorstep at 7 when they don't open til 10!
