More Disturbing News About Stolen Pets (sad Ending)
BC Crazy replied to redangel's topic in In The News
Oh my dog !!!!! I'm hearing you Vizsla Momma. Evil x 2.... Beyond belief & takes cruelty to a whole new level really. DISGUSTING WASTE OF OXYGEN X 2 Just so very sad for all concerned, especially the dear children who have had a very cruel & heartless intro into the wonderful world of sharing your life with a dog. -
Oh thats just dispicible denali there is no need to handle a young puppy in this manner or any animal for that matter. Sounds to me this shop has a lot to answer for. No wonder I wont enter any pet shop that sells anything with a heart beat. Just upsets me too much I' m afraid.

No trouble at all Just let me know k. You & your poor greys. Bloody horrific & unfair when Stan & Maddie can't even defend themselves. I'm livered....Can only imagine how you must feel. Thoughts are with you 3. Am ever so sorry

Oh what a lovely boy. Hope he finds the loving forever home he deserves. How could anyone do this to such a lovely boy. Just up & leave him

I think the dane pup looks a good weight. Dane pups shouldn't be too heavy as it puts pressure on their joints as they grow. I just hope it grows properly and isn't used to breed. Oh mup I thought he would of needed a bit more weight on him cause I noticed his hips a bit but I have never owned a giant so what you say makes perfect sense . You wouldn't want them too heavy then. I certainly would worry about anything with a Heart beat in her " care".....

Truly makes you wonder about people. Shakes head. +1

Oh jesus I have only just come across this. Sickening, those poor animals That poor fox in that bloody pen can barely turn around. Exercising Reactive Dogs Thread
BC Crazy replied to megan_'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
That's wonderful that Jake has been doing classes with other dogs Hankdog. He has made huge progress I can understand you being a tad jealous but you are very fortunate to have such good trainers & in turn so is he. Marvelous opportunity/experience for him. You must be bursting with pride. I know I would be. Gosh your in America, how exciting.... Had a very interesting visit from the Vet/Behaviourist yesterday. Apparently Stella is genetically high end anxious/reactive/noise phobic. He temp. tests at the RSPCA as well as being a Vet & lectures at uni's etc etc & he said that he would have been given Stella her wings long ago as she'd fail the temp. test miserably. It is his belief that her issues would have started with her mum not wanting to feed her or her siblings without being physically held down & made to by her breeder (which I only found out after purchasing her) The whole calm/nurture/bonding experience didn't exist for Stella from day one & he couldn't emphasis enough how crucial that period of her life is in shaping her whole mental make up for future life. Hence she has invented some of her own coping skills, eg. toy carrying/sucking. Fright & flight. She runs/whines at the slightest sound etc etc. He commended me on how well I have managed her thus far & that I am on the right track, which I was pretty chuffed about I must admit. I have a tonne of paperwork to read up on that he has left me with which is great. I am to intercept her flight behaviour way earlier than I have been & redirect her by asking her to do something.Sit, laydown whatever/reward. Her thought pattern has to be totally interrupted & redirected, which I was doing BUT I wasn't asking her to do something, I didn't totally follow through so she would revert straight back into panic mode. Each time she reenters her panic mode her state of arousal is heightened till she was over her threshold & beyond. She can be a bit pushy/rude with me at times that I was totally unaware of so he has given me a few ways to correct her. Funny how an experienced eye can see things so clearly that the likes of myself would never notice. There are a few other things as well that he brought to my attention. All in all Stella is going very well for who she is but we are going to tweak with her a bit, see what happens. She is a very complex work in progress according to him. See how we go. Also he was watching Sonny & then said that he was in pain I was so shocked. I had no idea. He went over him. Seems my boy has some back soreness & I am to get his back Xrayed. So he is off to the Vet on Monday. Fingers crossed it is nothing to serious. Oh no more worry. Enough already..... -
Training Out An Unwanted Behavior
BC Crazy replied to hankdog's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Oh bummer Corvus Can I ask where I can the blog you have written regarding risk aversion if you do pop back in. I would be very interested to read it especially the 3rd instalment. Some very interesting posts on this thread. IMO I believe whatever method you use would very much depend on the nature of the dog you are working with to begin with. Flooding for example with my girl would be a total disaster. She is way too fragile. She would just have a complete mental meltdown. Redirection & reward seems to work best for her. -
Happy 3rd Birthday sweet Ziggy ♥

Copy cat then hey

Working with an extremely damaged dog is very difficult & no 2 are the same. How do you go out in the backyard with her? Can you 'reach' her better out there mentally I mean? I had far better progress outdoors, just sitting there together.Just got a bit closer each day. Lots of chatting & vocal encourage on my part also helped. Can you engage her in anything, like roll a ball across the floor, will she follow it? Just try to engage her in something 'fun' as well may help. Does she like soft toys? Kongs? If you can engage her in something even for a minute at a time it sometimes can help them to soften a bit.

Hi Pawprints, Just wanted to firstly say good on you for rescuing this girl I am by no means an expert on this subject but I did rescue an 16 month old extremely fearful, damaged & abused Border Collie whom I owned for almost 15 years. He displayed such fearful behaviour I never thought I was going to make progress with him but I did & he turned out to be my heart dog. He was nothing short of wonderful. You say you have had this girl 2 months? One thing I did find with Redman is that this whole gaining their 'trust' process took a VERY long time. A good 12 months before I could just walk up & pat him & for him to be comfortable about that. Without him darting off or shaking in his boots. 3 months for him to take food out of my hand. He was never comfortable inside our home no matter how hard I tried, so I brought him the very best of kennels & he remained an outside dog for the most part. Unless there was a storm or very cold weather then he would go into the garage on his bed. I picked up the garden hose one day after I had owned him for 8 months to wash my car, Redman ran under the house, his 'safe place' & stayed there for 2 days Obviously he'd been beaten with one in his previously tortured life. He never ended up going through our dog door we had installed either. He hated it. These are just a few things that I remember but there were tonnes of episodes where I was left totally gob smacked by his reaction. I think it also comes down to excepting that they may not do things other dogs don't think twice about. I also found walking / swimming him helped him gain self confidence & also helped relieve stress. We did that daily. He too wasn't happy about collars/leashes being put on but I just approached this slowly but matter -a- factly. He got used to it eventually. So you have to be in this for the long haul as it can take forever & you can have a really promising day where you make fantastic progress with her & the very next day she may revert straight back to how she was when you first got her. Remember this girl has been through loads of neglect & no socialization usually. I just took everything I wanted to teach him at his pace. As soon as I saw signs of retreat or stress I backed off. Other times when I really knew all he need was a little encourage I gave it to him & I would push him mentally. You really have to read her & learn to understand her. I used to watch Redman for ages without him knowing, trying to figure what made him tick. But when you finally 'win them over' it is certainly worth every single moment of effort :) Hope I have been of some help. Good luck with her. Keep us posted.

One thing I do know about the Coton is I love them I don't think there are any breeders here in Aus. They are a very trainable, water loving, playful, social little dog from all accounts. Not yapper's either. If you were looking for a dog very similar to the Coton, I would highly recommend the Havanese. They are an awesome little dog. Very cute. Terrific temp. Really bubbly personality. Get on well with other dogs, small & large also cats in my experience. Very social. Extremely easy to train as they are really biddable. And not yappy at all. There is a breed page for them on this forum I think & in the sub forum there are folks/breeders that will be able to answer any ???? you may have. We have one in my extended family & honestly little Lola is such a sweety. Full of beans & loads of fun. Hope I have been of some help :)

Quick up date regarding Stella. We are now on day 7 of Phenomav & yesterday we had our first totally 'dry' 24 hours She also seems a lot more steady on her feet of late, so am hoping the teething period is nearing the end & she is beginning to become accustom to it. it stops the seizures or at least lessons them. That will be wonderful. I have the Behavioural Vet coming out on Friday to assess Stel's anxiety/reactivity issues & also give me some skills to help her improve. Very much looking forward to that :)

Yes VizslaMomma that is exactly what I think is happening because she is sound asleep then all of a sudden she jumps up but it is too late. She does seem to be 'very relaxed 'at times . Not nearly as nimble on her feet either as she usuallly is .A bit clumsy poor girl. The Vet did say it will take a week for her system to become used to the drug then she should be ok. So hopefully this behaviour is part of the teething process. I must say I have never seen her sleep so well which must be a good thing. She never has been able to sleep cause she is always so anxious & tormented .
