Exercising Reactive Dogs Thread
BC Crazy replied to megan_'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I love this thread as well raineth & thanks for you kind supportive words. Good on you KHM... Isn't it the bet feeling when you have a "win" no matter what the size :) Stella has taken a few steps backwards of late. She hasn't been well, diagnosed as Epilepsy effected which has shaken us up unfortunately so we are a little bit all over the place atm. She has been going OK though all thing considered I guess. Hopefully we will get back on track with our training soon. She had a dummy spit this morning at a cattle dog cause he came up close to me. She tends to rush at them, slight lip curled & growling to make them retreat. One of the habits I usually intercept but she was way to quick for me this time. -
He's a very pretty little pony :) Me wants one

How To Dispose Of [yecch!] Pulled Ticks?
BC Crazy replied to sandgrubber's topic in General Dog Discussion
I burn them to death.... sadistic I know but I detest them & am always worried if I do anything less to them they will survive to hurt another animal. They are very resilient. -
Yes Caseykay, Stella does exactly this. It was for a couple of days after she had those 2 pretty bad seuzures. The incontinence is the puddle on her blankets type thing. Stella was also desexed at 6 months old but not convinced that has to much to do with it. I think it may be more as you say, she doesn't seem as aware & definitely not back to her true self yet. The seizures are very intense so they really must play havic with their nervous system I would think.
-
I wondered about the seizure activity too persephone. Maybe. She has woken both times, straight away, looking around like, what the hell!!! then moves away. She wakes herself up. When I think about some of her really bad night mares, maybe they were mild seizures too I don't know... Will be asking my Vet next visit. So out of character for her. Didn't know there was such a thing as spey incontinence perse, interesting.

Stella has had a couple of water works accident's in the last 2 days which is so unlike her. She has wet herself while she has been sound asleep. Stella has always had severe night mares, even as a puppy. This was just a dream though on both occasions. She is completely asleep then her start legs are moving, like she is running etc & she whines/pants as well. Then she jumps up & goes to sleep somewhere else. I then discover she has wet there. Poor girl is usually so clean & never has an accident, ever. I wondered if this is some kind of side effect of the Epilepsy??? Has anyone else Epilepsy effected dog had these kind of symptoms?

Yes I didn't know what was wrong with Stella either. I thought either a snake had bitten her or she had ran into something & broken her spine as she was paralysed You would have felt so awful especially after rousing on her then she has a seizure You weren't to know though.

Horrified By Children's Actions
BC Crazy replied to RiverStar-Aura's topic in General Dog Discussion
Poor little dog.... What the f is wrong with some people/'parents' Good on you for stepping in & speaking up for the littley who doesn't have a voice. Nothing angers me more than seeing an animal tormented -
I have been in contact with Robert & have ordered some Epilepsy drops & also some recovery drops for after she has a seizure. I also ordered some Nervous Rehabilitation drops to help Stella nervous system. Hopefully we may be able to calm her down a little. Very helpful guy & excellent service. Thanks so much for the heads up regarding this Herbalist brighthelm. I doubt I would of thought of this type of avenue & it's got to be worth a try :)

Sheena, how awful for your daughter little dog. And to fall over the balcony Good to hear that she was managed well on a small dose of meds. Very interesting indeed to hear of the environmental aspect. As you might already know Stella is very reactive/noise phobic & is very anxious. I was wondering with her being this type of dog would it effect these seizures in as much as would she be inclined to seizure more as she is so anxious. When she had her first seizure she was very stressed as our neighbor was whipper sniping right near our boundry fence which sets her off. So she was running around the yard, whining, so I quickly went to find her & that's when she was just starting to seizure on the ground All those things you mention are all huge triggers for her anxiety. Loud noises, flashing lights etc etc There is a pretty extensive list unfortunately.

I Hoped I Would Never Have To Ask This :(

Brandiandwe, I too was wondering if any of these guys had anything if common as well. My boy was very fearful of men with elastic sided work boots, hats & beards. He bailed up the meter reader, guy from the water board & a man who came to deliver some furniture. All 3 looked almost identical. They also looked identical to the man I got Redman off who thought it was a good way to keep him in line was to kick the S#!T out of him Inka3095....If you can work out what her triggers are you may be able to work her through these fearful issues. Also forgot to mention that if your girl hasn't been socialized. This too can cause huge problems as the dog matures. Redman was never socialized & it caused major issues as they have absolutely no coping skills. They just have a meltdown as the big wide world can completely overwhelm's them. As another doler said, it isn't the end of the world BUT your girl needs to be handled very carefully. You have to be assertive but reassuring. Monitor her reactions to all things. Don't force her into things. That is one thing paramount here. This whole exercise is going to be very time consuming. You may not see results immediately. But with a gentle hand I have been astounded at how most of these dogs can come around. -

Your Kelpie x reminds me very much of a Border Collie I rescued years ago. He was the same age as well. He was a fantastic dog. I had him almost 15 years & I adored him. He was my heart dog BUT he would bite given the oppitunity or if he felt threatened or frightened. You are dealing with a dog that have most likely been very mistreated/abused. They are extremely fearful. What seems like a perfectly normal situation to you he may percieve as a threat. Whether he is familiar with the person or not. I managed Redman because I could. We did over come many of his fears but some we didn't. However if I were you I would get a highly recommended behaviorist to help. Dogs like this are highly unpredictable & can be dangerous. I would be keeping him at home till then. You don't want him to bite anyone else. Good luck with him. Keep us posted on how he goes :) -
Many thanks dogbesotted. Will be reading up :) I've just turned the big 50, the wheels have well & truly come off I'm afraid

That's very interesting that your Vet is reluctant to prescribe any drugs Rosetta. My Vet has never said anything along those lines to me & Stella has been on Xanax & Endep for well over 12 months now. Might be worth me asking him the question???? I hope that it certainly isn't the case. Stella is a very reactive & noise phobic girl. She also self harms so I would hate that to be the case

Thoughts Please... :d They Worked! Thanks.

I hope little Maggie is going to be OK All our paws are crossed here for good news .... -
Thanks Rosetta :) Yes I'm hoping her seizures are seldom so as I don't have to put her on meds. I am going to look into natural aids as they may help her. Has your boy always suffered seizures ? They are frightening to witness aren't they? Gosh if Stel has them too often she wont be the only one on meds. She may have to share her Xanax with me

Geez korbin13, that sounds very nasty, poor dog... Might have to stick with the brisket bones in the future. They are very hard to get here. Will have to shop around more I think. I never leave them unattened while eating nor do I leave the bones lying around when they are done with them as I have heard thats when they become a choking hazzard.as they become brittle. Brisket bones top of shopping list :)
-
Rosetta, sandgrubber is correct . It is a process of elimination. They test for other things that can cause seizures. Stella's test results came back perfect. Otherwise she is very healthy. She wont be put on meds unless the seizures become frequent. Everything crossed here that they don't. Some dogs that are Epilepsy effected may only say have 2 seizures a year in which case can be managed without meds. Apparently Stella's grand dam is effected like this. She is almost 12 years old now I believe. Never needed meds. Still enjoying life to the fullest. Some dogs are seizuring a lot & that can take its toll on the poor dogs mind & body. Thats when meds are very necessary. Atm we just go along as normal. See how Stella goes. I am regulating her exercise/ stress levels to ensure she doesn't get too hot or try not to let her get too stressed as both these factors are big triggers for her to seizure.

I buy the larger beef soup bones from woolies. I just go through the bags cause some of them are too small. If I do find any small ones at home I bin it. I also buy marrow bones from Coles. They are a big hit with my guys as well. They only have one of those a week as they are very high in fat. Mine also get a chic carcess a couple of times a week. I try to alternate between these . My guys are 3 & 5 though :)

Thanks Pretty Miss Emma. Honestly she is running around today having a absolute blast chasing birds. She is a very happy girl. I am coming to terms with this diagnosis. I think it was just the first seizure that really terrified me as I didn't know what was going on. Seeing he paralysed & so distressed was more than a little confronting. Now I can understand that this may well happen again but she isn't going to die. She just needs some special care to make sure she is safe. I can cope with that.

We are bunkered down for the night here as well. TV & air con blarring to drown out the sound of fireworks. So far so good. Happy new year Stans mum, Stan & Maddie. Stan is looking glam as ever. Love his new years hat & matching man bag LOL All the very best for 2014 Hazy Wal & your lovely greys. Will be in touch :) Fellow Dolers......Have a great new year. Happy. Healthy & Safe.

Thanks everyone so much for your advice, kindness & support I am relieved to have a result & know what I have got to contend with now. Am still deeply saddened about it as my girl has so much promise but I guess that really hasn't changed. Will just have to work around her health issue now is all. The main thing is she is happily enjoying life apart from her Epilepsy.

Got our blood work results back for Stella today & she is Epileptic unfortunately The tests showed nothing sinister going on which is good to know though I guess. Just got to keep a close eye on her & note any seizures/turns she has. If they become more frequent the Vet will organise medication for her. I am getting my head around this now & learning more about it is helping to do that. Wouldn't know there was anything wrong with her if you saw her atm. After a 3 hour walk/swim/ball retrieve, just got home & she is flying around the backyard with an empty milk bottle in her mouth, growling her head off She's back....

I wonder if it is safe to use a product such as these herbal drops if your dog is already on meds such as Xanax. Might email to inquire.

Prescription Medication Online
BC Crazy replied to truehorseaddict's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
This whole " script" thing is something that I have had to deal with as well in as much as the Vet I have been going to in our home town refuses to give me a script which enables me to save at least $70 every 2 months on Stella's current meds compared to the Vet I see at our holiday destination that we visit at least twice a year that has no issues with giving me a script which allows me to save $$$$ because I can shop online. Errrrr.....
