  1. yes use supercoat, find it fantastic. 2 dogs, 2 diff types, no problems with super poos or super drinks/wees.Poo is always firm for pick up  they also have vegies and bones.
  2. You are right Kavik a few people on here have used check chains which can't be used to choke but can give a noise warning. Someone posted a pic of one a while ago. I also agree that a wide variety of methods are used and combined. I don't think there is one that can be completely correct for every situation and dog. It interests me too that people who first describe certain methods always want to discredit another method. Koehler was THE one and only for years and the guard dog training I believe but someone can correct me is still the preferred method. I do not like chains, have never liked them have always thought that praise and reward is far better. This does not mean that I do not have huge respect for Koehler, I do. I do however realise that there are many with specialised skills who will use methods necessary for the dog at certain times. I know trainers who use chains and I have enormous respect for them I do not think they should be used as part of basic socialising obedience. I do not think that Joe Soap should be able to just go and buy them at the local discount store.
  3. I have read koehler but I also agree with pgm that if you use a chain it should be used correctly, I said that about 10 posts back. I don't like chains, I think they should all be melted down into ornamental gates or something. Except very few which would be used by extremely experienced dog handler/trainers. There are trainers who use chains for 'last resort' dogs. I do not think this lady is using the halti correctly.
  4. for goodness sake I have no idea where you got this info from but have a rethink, sounds like a trot back to the dark ages. maybe read the stuff that has been posted on this thread and change tact. I think your dog would like it better, in fact I know your dog would like it better.
  5. oh cat I am so sorry, what a beautiful cat, what a terribly sad story. take care, hugs to you.
  6. so sorry Bob for your loss run free little one
  7. does to me also I forgot to mention the treats, make sure they are yummy, something really special if you are using a spot of bribery so your arm doesn't fall off. They love bbq chicken and polony and yummy stuff, don't give cat biscuits and expect an excited reaction, and don't reward if they don't work right otherwise they think they don't have to do anything to get a tasty treat.
  8. oops sorry didn't reply to Cindys Mum. I would say go to a training class and put the halti away till you know how to use it properly. Don't use a chain if you are having trouble with a halti you could do all sorts of damage with a chain, as you can with the halti. Which brand is it incidentaly, the halti? Walking a dog who pulls is nightmare material but the restraining methods you apply or collars you use need to be used in conjunction with a programme to help you understand why the dog pulls and how all sorts of stuff you allow your dog to do at home influences their pulling. Try the flat, normal collar halt when pulls wait till not pulling then move off, or just stop and change direction, tell the dog where you are going, hey boy, we are going this way now, cos I am taking you for a walk not the other way round. It may take you half an hour to get down the driveway but you will get there. I like the halti a lot but it must fit properly and you need to know how to walk the dog with it on. There is a manual with some, or have a look on the net. edit to add you must allow your dog to sniff the ground, is just a doggy newspaper.
  9. why not? have you asked? I think that is odd socialisation is important perhaps the most important aspect of training. Many people take dogs to training simply for socialisation, aren't they allowed to sniff bums or anything or is it just some dogs being desensitised who are not yet allowed to socialise?
  10. might not be a grass seed at all, could be a touch of kennel cough or something else, really best take to the vet especially considering your previous problems. good luck
  11. only if they need it which isn't too often, don't bathe the mal much at all, showered them both last week as they had been in something particularly wonderful and stank like a sewer.
  12. Interesting idea that swapping from one product to another which we feel works is because the first prep did all the work I disagree, my dogs are dosed according to directions. I regularly swap from advantage to frontline with Rusky, the mal. I always use advantage for Cindy the Golden and the cat. They each have their own boxes, no sharing, I tried that and got confused. So based on at least 8 years of swapping around I would have to say that sometimes the products do not work on a wooly dog. I won't be doing a thesis on it, if you still have fleas, swap products but follow the directions.
  13. Great news keep fighting little man lablover for you from me and my lot
  14. Any more news? I am pleased to see that Tia is improving, wondering about the canned food though. Keep going little Tia be strong
  15. I am so sorry for this poor poor lady and her dogs, her heart must be breaking. It has occurred to me and must have to some of you that tampering is not unheard of. It may or may not be the canned food, that remains to be seen and honestly without a lot more testing and positive results it is difficult to know, is very confusing. 1) Can could have been deliberately tampered with by ???? 2) It may not be caused by the canned food at all. 3) The company are at fault but this has to be proven conclusively If it was the can we will know on national news in a day or so.
  16. Humans get this too, this is the canine version, bit of info but probably better links around, will have a look. canine leptospirosis lablover you know I am sending good wishes your way
  17. congratulations Open next you will enjoy
  18. sounds wonderful hope you and your dogs have a rewarding time
  19. I am so very sorry, words won't be enough. I hope you have good friends and family to support you through this tragedy.
  20. I buy ox liver, boil till a bit brown looking, cool, slice real thin, bake in oven on lowest setting to dry out, when crisp is done and adored Smelly cheese, chicken sausage nice and mushy is fingerlickin' good. BBQ chicken is a goody too.
  21. My old Golden was diagnosed with severe bilateral hip dysplasia at around 6 months of age. I did use vitamin C, it is 12 years ago and no internet like now, little support so really my best chance of her leading a happy life was diet, and lots of swimming at her own pace. We lived next to the ocean, was easy. Swimming may or may not be right these days depending on trends of treatment but she still swims, swims well and some days is really well. She had lots of fresh vegetables in her diet as well as C supplement though I stopped that at around age 5. At age 5 I thought she was going to have a replacement but she seemed better than other dogs I knew who had the operation. I had put it off for a long time, she was originally going to have an op at age 2 years. I opted out at that time as she was quite free and well. She still has her fresh vegies. Don't rush into surgery, one op will not be the finish, your dog will need 2 or 4 with bilateral. Get your dog as well and fit as you can then look at surgery. Try the C, give everthing a go, even the swimming.
  22. Just wondering if you show people use a rake to strip out the loose stuff. I use one on Rusky but she is a Mal and doesn't show. After a good rake rather than a brush she looks good, it doesn't make bald patches.
  23. I understand and I have had the patience to read this thread too. You are right, they do only look the same my dog watches your dog watches Why do they watch is the question. You have the ecollar I have praise, cuddles, a tasty morsel (maybe, maybe not) I do understand, I still disagree but I understand. I always disagreed, since being a child I disagreed.
