  1. Boxagirl I was going to copy and paste the relevent bits from this website and suggest you contact the club to ask for advice about current laws in WA. If anyone knows in WA they will. I think the whole site is interesting and even has a 2005 flavour in view of recent BSL legislation. GSDAWA
  2. for Lillysmum not the best link but short simple paragraphs to explain the what is of positive and negative punishment, well descriptions for all sorts really. I hope it helps. One night a couple of weeks ago a mate and I got really heated over the descriptions then we burst out laughing It may be that some here will disagree with the very loose descriptions from this site, but it does give a general idea. training descriptions
  3. I found the vinegar recipe on a site earlier this year and son has not had a vet visit since with his dog, cost was getting silly. We use an almost dry solution, don't use cotton wool we use those make up remover pads. Was trying to find another link too which we used then went on to the apple cider wiping ok found it ear cleaner consult your vet
  4. thanks SAS I don't know anything about dog tech, yes harsh. The people she is using though are dog whisperers and they seem to be using similar methods. There must be an independant trainer in cactus's area. ok edited to add a link k9 events trainers private reward based
  5. I am surprised that a dog behaviourist would tell you to pat the dog on the head, dogs don't like head pats. Look I know nothing about the dog whisperer crew but there will be people on the board from your area who might be able to suggest someone else to get a second opinion. Isn't my view of 'not harsh' either cactus. I am pretty surprised. You said you got a trainer too or was it the same person you meant? I think you meant yourself and sounded like you were doing a pretty good job. You need a trainer. Try Gambys suggestion, give them a call, tell them everything, make sure they understand you have already employed a behaviourist and who it is. Good luck.
  6. cactus are you doing what the behviourist told you or what the trainer told you or a mixture of both and do they both know about each other. I am confused about the training V *real* training.
  7. the chickens would be safe. I see that you do use management If a dog is untrained in a situation management is imperitive. I have not posted any theories, just sensible advice to Muttley I am incidentaly still waiting to see what you can tell me about my dog.
  8. while you train the dog what happens to the chickens? or is your training method an instant one?
  9. You will know how to teach recall I guess, if you need a hand though be sure to pm me. this thread is about a dog that got a chicken K9 you introduced the washing and Myszka introduced dogs running after gulls and rabbits now.. blimey My solution to the dog that killed the chicken is to secure the chickens. Yours is something else what is is anyway? neither you nor Miszka have offered a solution just washing balloons and dogs flying off cliffs.
  10. gee and I walked my dogs on the beach every morning along with a mass of others. I never saw a dog catch a gull. I certainly would not be allowing my dogs off lead near a cliff if they didn't have a reliable recall. K9 I have 5 children, the baby is 21. They can never visit friends places unless they have my knee to sit on, poor unsociable outcasts My diary is full of parties and rock concerts
  11. wondering what it tells you ? haha my dog is not a problem with washing, my children did visit peoples places, when they were small they sat on my knee. No tears, no stress. Why set a dog/kid up to fail? Myszka re the vet and the leg. I seriously hope you are not suggesting I would condone something like that. If you do you have not read what I have written take it back a step. dog kills chicken man punished dog I am sad for the man he did the wrong thing. I am sad for the dog. find a solution 'keep dog away from chickens... problem solved. If you have a dog that that chases seagulls I would say it is a happy well balanced dog, being a dog. If the dog lunges when you are walking then the dog and you need some leash training . I know this was an example and not your own dog... unlike K9 I do read the threads and the post hahaha
  12. management and training are very closely intertwined with both children and dogs I don't really understand your walking reference because we are talking about chickens and washing. I didn't raise either problem. I offered my simple effective and no stress solutions. They work... I would never suggest not walking your dog.
  13. I did not suggest that the op not keep chickens. Keep the chickens away from the dog, secure the chickens, secure from Mr Fox too. Why do people need to peg out their wash with a pup around? no need pup thinks 'wow look what Mum left for me to play with yipeee rippeee whoopee' simple not to leave it pegged out when pup is alone unsupervised. There is no need to have unsecured chickens or unsecured washing.
  14. Thats management not training. If they love the baloon, you find something they dislike.... does it matter so long as the washing isn't mangled? I mean management or training, maybe sometimes we need a bit of training. I was never a mother who taught her kids 'not to touch' I removed all they could damage or hurt themselves on. When the children reached an age of understanding then I explained why they should not touch... and they didn't. good management... no tears... happy relaxed mother
  15. and what about the dogs that lurrve that game? I prefer not to have washing hanging out when the dog that would exhibit that behaviour is alone
  16. yes but I don't think showdog realised was a newposter and that Muttley is listening to what is being said. I think SD saw red... just like me... then didn't read the thread... ta da... I did for once is ok Muttley, so pleased you came here for help you will get lots of great advice. Some of those outdated punishments are still happening, now you are here we will re educate you
  17. make sure the dog can't get to the chickens the dog didn't mean to kill the chicken keep the two apart from now on and you won't have any problems. Don't stress too much about punishing the dog now that you know you shouldn't have, dogs are very very forgiving.
  18. what breed of dog is she? For some dogs the halti doesn't fit too well and for others the gentle leader isn't a good fit. I still like the halti but you really need someone to help you use and fit it correctly and combine with obedience training. The black dog now make a head halter in such a way as many of us were already adapting the halti brand before they went to supermarkets. I think the new haltis are finer and differently sized. I know a guy using a gentle leader which was fitted very recently for him and his dog it is the best option. worked out the breed silly me didn't realise RR was the breed thought it was a rescue group name
  19. I think you mean a gentle leader and sometimes they don't fit well. In any case they should go to training to get someone to help them find the right collar halti or harness or whatever and to fit it properly for them and show them how to use it. They will enjoy themselves and the dog will love it.
  20. good for you and good luck with sorting out your problems
  21. what situations is your dog in when he gets upset? in answer to your question though I think you need to work out your problem with the GSD pup before getting another pup.
  22. pleased for you. Nice vet. I have been having a bit of a whinge about the local vet practice. I am sure some people think it is cute but I recieved a letter addressed to Rusky Dear Rusky your vaccinations are due, please tell Mum or Dad to bring you for your etc etc I really worry about a vet that thinks my dogs can read I will change vets, get one that knows I read all the dogs mail :D
  23. Not so! AIDS has been totally cured to the stage of patient being HIV negative, but you won't see it in the media cos drug companies can't make money out of it. As is the case with cancer. Many people have been sent home to die with terminal cancer and have been saved thru alternative therapies over the last century, but as this is routine, I guess it doesn't qualify as amazing or unbelievable! Beg to differ here - have had cases where standard vet treatment has almost caused the death of an animal, which has then been saved and healed thru immediately stopping ALL vet treatment and substituting alternative treatment. Have also undergone standard medical treatment myself, both in and out of hospital, which has totally failed to help, and only been cured thru alternative treatment. NB - I still use a qualified practitioner for advice, not into prescribing for myself in life and death situations! maybe you should read what you write. you said AIDS has been totally cured to the stage of a patient being HIV negative you said many people have been sent home to die with terminal cancer and have been saved through alternative therapies. you go on to say it is routine. I have linked the post you made. As I said before the drug companies await your phone call, maybe try the one developing the vaccine. I will be interested to hear what they have to say. BTW all drug patents expire it is the law. I also feel that if you get your medical degree... 6 years... then do your house jobs...1 to 2 years... then work in natural medicine and join a research programme to develop your aids cure I will seriously be the one shouting from the rooftops at your achievements.
